Nice try, but classical students consider Bream sloppy and overly melodramatic: Parkening is the man for precision, and Williams produces a tone on the instrument that is just about otherworldly. (BTW... J/K. We all dug J. Bream when I was majoring in guitar at Butler... even while understanding that he was sloppy and melodramatic.) Among fans of rock music, flashy, burnin'-down-the-house solos are always the ones that get mentioned... but among guitar players, a list of more musical and souful solos always get mentioned as "the greatest." Here are some you see on guitar forums all the time: David Gilmour - Comfortably Numb (without a doubt, praised by more guitar players than any other solo, hands down) Jesse Ed Davis - Doctor My Eyes by Jackson Browne (a model of economy and rhythmic invention) Amos Garret - Midnight at the Oasis by Maria Muldaur Almost any Steely Dan solo, but Denny Dias on Bhodisattva and Larry "The Slayer" Carlton on Kid Charlemagne are solos that guys will study for months. Also, Carlton's solo on Third World Man is so good, it was originally performed on another song that Becker & Fagen abandoned, but felt the solo was so good they wrote a new song around it (or so the story goes).
I really like The Unforgiven solo by Metallica. Not technically impressive, but i LOVE it. maybe that's because it's one of a few i can play. =P

I listen to Warleyson Almeida a lot though and he is good as well but he plays at the level that I do myself so I know there are guys way better: video Metallica is my favorite band for life though.
ah screw you jim! I was only seeing if anyone could get what I was hinting at, classical music! Classical Guitarists are usually called guitar soloists as well. I watched a video of that monster della vega the other day, it was like watching one of those machines that you see doing naked women on videos.... Do you know Larry Ferrara? Don't look him up because Larry is his nickname.
this polll could never be done as every guitar player is different and love them all for there own styles.. i even can play a decent solo from time to time if i put down my ipod. lol ill go with my guitar gods... anything from randy rhoads, or dime! chris.
The person who most consistently has great solos is Clapton. I notice almost everyone on this thread simply likes fast guitar, but I could care less about the speed. It all depends on how much emotion the player is able to convey.
