I am a sucker for good icons. One of my favorite icons I don't even own. It's for the Twitter app, Birdhouse. I don't use Twitter and have no intention to, ever. But I was seriously contemplating spending $4 on the app just to have the icon on my springboard. It's just excellent.



Luckily, Ian Marsh has provided me with a suitable alternative :

 

I have to agree with Sky Burger and all of Ngmoco's games.

 

I like Peggle, Super Marble Roll (without the "Sale" banner ), Touchgrind, Isotope, and Tap Tap DMB.

My favorite icons are those that don't include that stupid little Apple "sweep" across the top. I really don't understand the reasoning behind that thing. It's...ugly.

The best icons are those that have the little border around them. Pangea's games, regardless of what one may think of the games themselves, have stellar icon designs.

Both Car Jack Streets icons (the original and the new one) are well designed.

SkyForce and iFighter have cool icons as well.

Snake Galaxy has a good one.

A great one that sadly isn't so great anymore (as it had a redesign) was the original icon to HydroTilt. The icon was like Baseball Superstars, but with the water/liquid ball that is the "star" of HydroTilt. Extra points for no stupid Apple "sweep". The new icon? "XL" in bubble letters, and to add insult to injury they've added that goddamned useless Apple "sweep".

Seriously...WTF is up with that "sweep"? Who even likes that crap?

 

As someone said before, my vote goes to Snake Galaxy, great, just great.

 

It's just a sheen effect that Apple decided to use on its native icons. I actually appreciate when developers stay consistent with Apple's interface. It just flows better and looks nicer, in general. I'm also not crazy about icons that use black backgrounds to outline shapes instead of using the standard Apple "button" shape. Not everyone is down with Apple's rigid GUI, but it's very tidy whether we like it or not, and IMO, it just looks better to have things be uniform.

Most of the apps I have buried on page 9 have sloppy looking icons.

 

Word Fu!.. The instore icon is not the iDevice icon.

 

I like the Knights Onrush icon.

 

I saw a really cool app icon the other day but I forgot the name of the app. It has a mummy's head starting to unravel. Anyone know what the app is?

ok nevermind...I found it. The name of the game is Arcana Agency: Prologue . Best icon I've seen so far, I don't know how the game is though.

 

Star Defense, Defender Chronicles, Toki Tori, Kryzer Prologue, Knights Onrush, Quantum Collapse, iBomber, Pocket Tanks Deluxe (It looks like the classic PC icon ) and Real Racing are my favorites.

 

I really can't stand apps with transparent/black backgrounds, it just makes them look so bad alongside all the pretty, shiny full icons. SnakeGalaxy and Peggle come close to getting away with it, and with StrollGarden and one more I could have a line of circular icons with transparent backgrounds ... but it still irks me.

The worst example of this IMO is the [app]WeatherNZ[/app] app, which has a perfectly good icon as seen on the store, but an awful one with a transparent background on the device - I don't understand why they bother having different ones anyway, and especially not different bad ones, it just keeps me from enjoying the utility of the app, and in this case, keeps it off my iPhone.

Another bad one is putting the name of the app in the icon - that's what the name underneath is for IMO. Mind you StrollGarden originally had that, and I suggested in feedback that they change it, and they went with transparent background ... so I can't win . Ooh PocketTanks is a good (bad) example of a bad icon with the app name.

Ranting aside, and on positive ones, Dizzy Bee & Bed Bugs, Toki Tori, Bobby Carrot Forever, Crash Kart, Rolando - all very recognisable and appealing without annoying me . Oh and having the Apple-style glow curve through the middle is also a plus on most of those.

 

Flick Fishing and Fieldrunners are good. I enjoy the ones with framing around the edges, probably due to my photography background.

Star Defense and Real Racing are up there too.

 

9 innings, fastlane, BIA, Aircoaster 3D, Orbitsu, paper toss(fits the game exactly, i like simple and defining icons, not dumb ones that ur not sure what the game is like)

 

I like the Kryzer, Snake Galaxy and Real Racing icons.
