essentially you could use MS paint or GIMP or such and then find something like Cocos2D and then maybe even use a free Code compiler and bam....your done!

A lot of tools are available for free. Like prez said above, you could GIMP for your graphics.

For programming, the base Xcode is completely free. However, you can only make Mac apps with the free version, not iPhone apps. To do that, you'll need the iPhone SDK which is distributed only to registered iPhone developers. The basic license for that costs $99.

So, the biggest cost really is getting a Mac

If you just want to play around I would highly suggest getting free Unity engine for Windows.

It supports Java scripting (you've mentioned Java) and C#.

View few tutorials on the net about Unity and try to make simple game.
    This is good one: http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?181409-Over-7-hours-of-Unity-Training-Videos-Download-them-now...

Don't buy Mac yet as you might not like what you'll find out - making games is difficult.

If after this you still think you can do it then you can buy Mac and become iPhone developer - almost everything you'll learn on Unity Windows is applicable for iPhone.

Hey, didn't think I should start a new thread on this, but needed some opinions.

So I just graduated college and have a nice part time job to hold over rent/utilities/food. I love my iphone and have always been interested in creating something, but have had no time. But now, I have...well literally all the time in the world until I find a career job(which i don't think will be easy). I have a MBP 13inch, and the drive to do it. Found a bunch of ebooks on how to get started, and the $100 to join the program isn't really an issue.

    Yes? No?

I'd say go for it, you have the time and equipment, who knows maybe you will hit it big and iPhone development will be your career :)

the iPhone SDK is free as well. You can develop and test on your machine but
to test on your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad you need to pay the $99 license.

Not sure if this will help much, but I recently created a thread asking for help to becoming a 2D Game Developer and got a lot of useful information. My advice is: grab a Mac computer and start out with a simple project with simple game/graphic engine(s).

    Here it is: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=53701

It also goes into detail about guidebooks that are useful, good suggested 2D engines, things to be aware of, and etc. Hope it helps! ;)

    Cheers!!,

    true dat.

Nobody ever accomplished anything by mulling over the possibilities while seeking guidance.

Who here asked for guidance on how to have sex? Or did you just do it, and figure it out along the way?

I don't doubt that. At the same time, I think that explains a lot about their prowess and abilities, which exactly correlates to the previous discussion about game development. Just dive in and do it. If you have specific problems (with game development or sex), THEN ask questions. But to ask questions before gaining any type of experience at all is kind of silly.

Look, if anyone is looking to start developing look at this guide: http://www.cocoalab.com/?q=becomeanxcoder.

I has to be one of the best FREE XCode books around and starts you off really slowly (assuming you have no knowledge of coding) and then ends with you actually making a very simple application.

Seriously I have a hard copy on my desk which I have read 3 times.

Definitely recommended for beginners who want to be a developer.
