My unsolicited opinion: Achievements are a way to measure progress in games that otherwise would not have any progression. They add depth to games that only have one scenario, with no story, quest, or loot. They are a proxy for depth and content. It made sense for Zombieville because there was not a lot of variety. You control one character, who has three guns and three skills, and I think five enemy types. You essentially do exactly the same thing over and over, so achievements make it feel like it's worth doing for some people. Personally, I felt like just the weapon and skill upgrades added enough flavor. In Battleheart, you control 4 characters from about 10 classes, each with their own customizable skill trees (about a dozen possible skills each). There are upgradable weapons and armor, and two accessories for customization. And there's a quest where replay allows you to find rare items. All of these things are more fun than a list of achievements.
My two cents -- for me, achievements are usually useless, but every now and then, when they are done right, they effectively provide additional content by encouraging me to go back and replay a level a different way. Plants vs. Zombies does this well, for example. I'm motivated not at all by collecting achievements -- dont view it the same as getting 3 stars on a level -- but if the achievements are interesting and pose a special *and different* challenge, I'll bite. Achievements done wrong actually bug me, usually either because there are too many pop-ups, because I am forced to grind them to advance (although oddly, I do sometimes like having to grind achievements...depends on the game I guess) or because the achievements are poorly designed. For example, for me, the achievements that the automatically happen when you play a lot are annoyingly dumb.
Full ack, 'cause that is the true spirit. Working together instead of having to compete all time. Hundreds of precious hours of your life spent for collecting archievements? Well, I just hope for you that this is what people call "fulfilled life". P.S.: no need to brag before you aren't among the Top 5 GC players.
Oh yeah, and this "whole freaking lot of people" won't stop whining and complaining until they get what they want - aditionally annoying another lot of people who simply don't care?
I don't care about archievements. I like the games just as they are. I am playing because I want to enjoy the game and not hunting archievements. I know about whores. No, not the usual ones - I mean graphic whores, sound whores - but Apple seems to have invented a new species: the archievement whore. I mean, why the heck not loving a game itself? To say: "I refuse buying it until it has archievements" sounds absolutely ridiculous to me. This is either Fanboy or just trolling. To say once or twice that you love to have archievements is o.k., but stating it every few posts over several pages slows down the other discussions about the game. Some people act like they're obsessed with archievements. They should go and see a doctor instead of attacking and trolling the people stating their opinion.

I hope this translates to some awesome sales for mika, as the original IGN review kind of screwed them with like a 5.5, seems they came to their senses.
