Sorry, it will be fixed to landscape orientation, as I had to custom design the interface to fit everything designed for 1024x768 down into 480x320. The game is pretty interface heavy, with so many screens for attack selection, unit info, etc. So I'm not about to double the porting workload!
is this game coming out soon? is this like regin of swords? are there any games like regin of swords?
Actually I was the lead developer of Reign of Swords. After I quit the company, they removed my name from the credits in ROS Episode 2, even though 90% of the code was still mine... So I am confident when I say that Battle for Wesnoth is better than ROS in every way possible!
From the gameplay in ROS 2, it felt like a rehashed ROS with new tiles. Not to knock you Kyle, but ROS was a bit bland for me. Now this game... <drool> I love the PC version, and this is the top of my list. Munkie!
That's a great question... So far everything has been progressing according to plan, because I have a lot of experience with porting games to mobile platforms. To port Wesnoth from desktop systems, here's the process that was followed: 1. Gather and sort out prerequisite libraries to get the source code to compile for iPhone. This is not so easy, because things like the SDL graphics engine only just recently had an early version that works on iPhone. Most other libraries that are common on desktops had to be compiled from source code to iPhone. 2. Once it compiles, get it to actually run on the simulator. There are many differences between desktop file systems and the iPhone, eg different file paths for loading data and saving data to a documents dir. 3. When it is running, make sure everything fits in the lower resolution. There are a lottt of menu dialogs in Wesnoth, have to redesign the gameplay UI to fit, etc. Also redesigned some screens to make it look better for iPhone (eg loading screen and main menu) 4. Change control scheme. There are no mouse-overs, mouse wheel, right clicks, etc on the iPhone. Change to tap on or tap and move, drag map to scroll, double tap for context menu, pinch to zoom map. 5. Optimize for the slower device. The iPhone is many times slower than a desktop, plus it has greatly reduced memory available. The first time I started the game up, it took like 5 minutes to get to the main menu! So now I am on the final step 5, which is the hardest and most difficult to plan for. Everything has to be cached, time profiled, etc. Not very much fun
sounds like fun...oops I mean it looks like there are still lot of work to solve out the PnR issues. Well, good luck & no rush.
This game seems huge with just single player, but cross platform multiplayer is pretty amazing. Definitely buying the first day it arrives.
I assume this isn't nearly as much of an issue for us lucky 3GS owners, right? If you have to cut anything (animations, details, etc), do at least provide a 3GS mode option so that those of us with faster processors and more RAM can enjoy them.
Well I wish you every success in this (considering the work you've put into it) and all future developments. This indeed, will leave Reign of Swords standing !
This, Reign of Swords 2 seems like just a rehash of part 1 but Wesnoth seems like it will last longer, and just be a better experience overall.
Now there's an understatement. Just the included story missions on normal difficulty would take a dedicated player weeks, if not months to beat. In the current PC build, there are 15 official campaigns so far, with over 210 missions spread between them.
Well of course I meant the game lasted waaay longer, but how long does a single mission take? It seems like one could be a couple of hours.
Because of the deep level of strategy involved, I don't think it's a stretch to say that there are literally hundreds of hours of gamplay in the bundled campaigns alone (total 190 levels!). Then you add single map scenarios, cross-platform multiplayer, downloadable user-made content... You'll be playing forever! heheh Edit: oops, Dominic White beat me to it hehe
Some missions are easier than others, plus most campaigns offer three difficulty settings... Right now I am stuck on one difficult mission in a campaign that I haven't been able to beat yet... Probably invested at least 6 hours so far, and have to start again to try a new strategy. Any other game I would feel frustrated and quit, but with Wesnoth the challenge and possibilities are just awesome. I know I'll keep trying until I finally beat this &@#^$@#
