Does the downloadable content mean it will require OS 3.0? This might just be the app that forces me to upgrade. I've so far stayed away from the current TBS games, but would greatly enjoy 'Battle for Wesnoth' in a portable form.
It will require OS 2.2.1+ The downloadable content is not using Apple's new in-game purchase API, but just custom code within the game to fetch the list of content from the server and download whatever you choose...
I kinda feel sorry for any studio working on a turn-based strategy game for the iPhone now, as a 400lb gorilla of a game has just lumbered onto the scene. I'm already considering my inevitable purchase of the iPhone version as a donation for the fun that the PC original has given me. It's seriously retail quality in almost every respect. The only gripes I can come up with are that the character portraits and some campaign art are amatuerish (although I've read that some artists have been hired to fix this in upcoming versions) and stand out against some other, excellent art, and that the plot is pretty generic fantasy fluff. Those are the only complaints I can think of - it's easily a match for stuff like Nintendos Fire Emblem series everywhere else - better, in fact. It's a huge, sprawling, deep and involving game with dozens of campaigns (not missions - CAMPAIGNS, with persistent-levelling characters and even some branching and multiple difficulty modes), each of which is a full games length in of itself, a hojillion multiplayer modes, tons of races to play as, good music, great gameplay, has lots of user-made content (and a browser/download system built in). The multiplayer side already has a large and active community, so it's never hard to find a match, and letting iPhone players tap into that will only improve things further. I'm assuming the iPhone version will be updated as new core releases of the PC/Mac/Linux version hit, too. It wouldn't make sense any other way, what with cross-platform play being one of the cooler features. I really do pity other studios at the moment. They're going up against a titan here.
where did you hear that? And on a side note, I'm hoping this game will blow the upcoming "Rogue Planet" out of the water. This game looks very promising and I can't find anything negative to say about the PC version. Great job by this studio
Seems a bit harsh to wish failure on any studio - the more good games competing for the coveted top-25 store spaces, the better for us consumers, no? More likely to prompt that lovely rush to the bottom of the pricing brackets in order to drum up sales. I know I've paid more than $1 for only a couple of games. That said, it was a tough market to begin with, but with Wesnoth moving in, its like going into a heavyweight bout expecting Mike Tyson and ending up facing down King Kong. Poor gits.
Yes. Plus it has YEARS of game play testing, tweaking, balancing and user input. And, yeah! The number of campaigns and user-created content will give plenty of replay value, not to mention the random map generator listed earlier. Great news Kyle. Thanks for letting us know it will still be on OS 2.2.1.
Heyyyy don't say it like that, people will think the game has been submitted! I assume you meant you clicked on the touchArcade "submit" button to submit the news about Wesnoth... Yes, I know waiting for an anticipated game is hard, but it's harder when you're the one that has to do all the work heh
That's right. Here I thought it'd be coming out while I was out in California. On that note, I really think we need to to get some ways to differentiate between posters. After a while from forum to forum all the forum names seem to blend together... Maybe each poster could list the games they worked on or are working on, companies, appstore submitter names, etc?
Thinking about it a little, two things that the iPhone version needs: Zooming - some of the maps are gigantic, and even with the minimap, you really need a good view of the battle at hand. Gameplay videos so far only show a handfull of hexes being visible at any given time due to the high-res nature of the art. Being able to zoom out to 1/4 scale would be very useful. And some way of replicating mouseovers - there's a ton of details available for each unit - traits like Intelligent or Loyal that if you highlight them in the unit info sidebar, it'll tell you what they mean and how they affect gameplay. It's pretty important information for a newbie. Anyway, I'm just hoping it comes out soon. I forsee it getting installed and never, ever leaving my iPhone.
Both zooming and mouseovers... well... tapovers... are supported in the iPhone version. For zooming, you can use the normal pinch gestures to switch between normal, 1/2 and 1/4 scale. This was actually supported in the original source code, so it wasn't much effort to include in the iPhone version. However, moving around on the map isn't too painful, as the drag-to-scroll system is quick and easy. You can either tap on, or hold and move over the unit details text to get the tooltip info. Plus the complete help system is intact, which is quite extensive and gives full details on all the unit types you have discovered in-game.
Just to update everyone: The iPhone port is progressing as planned, and I'm currently optimizing loading times and game performance. I'm also adding several features for the iPhone version that will make it look and play better... Given the choice, you might actually prefer to play on the go! The beta period should start in about a week!
