At this rate, a new core release of the game will be out shortly after the iPhone launch. How long do you estimate version updates to take, Kyle? I mean, they're pretty much required if you want to keep the cross-platform stuff working.

I imagine that when v1.7 is marked as stable, it will be many months before v1.6 is unsupported on the official servers... But I will definitely start working on a v1.7 update shortly after the iPhone game launches.

I am planning on doing an update every three weeks or so. One recent change with the iPhone version is that it no longer supports downloading add-ons, since there are many things that have to be optimized in the campaigns for the iPhone version, eg pre-cache the config files, resize the graphics, etc. So a new campaign will be introduced with each update, similar to PocketGod updates, but with TBS campaigns...

Ouch - that's a pretty major thing to lose. So, the iPhone will be launching with all the content from 1.6, and each update will bring whatever they've added normally, plus a 'best of the fan-campaigns' addition?

That's right... The vast majority of casual Wesnoth players have never played any addons, after all there is so much content in the bundled mainline campaigns. It would be nice to keep that feature of course, but there is now way it could be done. But don't think of it as losing anything, think of it more like a slow rollout! ;)

    What's your favorite addon campaign?

I can understand the technical limits here and having new ones in regular updates is a great compromise plus will help keep the game selling in the App Store hopefully.

I recently had the pleasure of playing through the Ooze mini-campaign add on. Playing a slime was a blast, and made for a really different experience. I'd love to see it included. I'd also love to see the creator make a much larger Ooze campaign. ;)

Other campaigns I'd like to see included are those that let you be the races you don't usually get to play, like the undead.

For everyone else - as you can tell, the Beta is underway. It's slow and crashes much, as one would expect from an early Beta, but the game underneath is indeed Wesnoth in all its glory - especially the sounds, which have translated perfectly.

Ah, I loved the Ooze mini-campaign... It will likely be in one of the first few updates, because the RPG elements are a nice change from the norm. Although I haven't finished the campaign myself yet, just soooo many waves of enemies at the last scenario. I'll have to go back and start again and be more careful this time! :D

Right now I am playing Invasion of the Unknown. This will probably be the first content update. It just sounds awesome when you can say that a regular update includes almost 150 new units and 24 campaign missions!!

That last mission was such an epic fight. Seeing the townspeople fall one by one to the enemy in the huge battle (along with their parting cries) was disheartening. Some bravely stuck through it to the end - the dark enchantress chewed up attackers on left flank, and my little troll whelp grew into a massive Level 3 gate defender by the end of it. It helped that I'd built up a ridiculous amount of gold by the end of the RPG map, allowing me to recruit peasants and woodsmen in such quantity that I could replace losses and respond to new threats.

Speaking of epic - Wow. I haven't tried that one yet. I think I'll wait until it's out on the iPhone version and let that one use up all my free time. :)

    Favorite addon

    Wesband.... definitely.

Good for a single player or two, though having to make it a skirmish or multiplayer game for the cpu to control the monsters makes it technically a map generator/age combo

it actually has an interesting feel with four player characters. almost like a pen and paper dungeon crawl using hexes for the map. and since all the units you control are heroes and each player controls only one hero unit (save the CPU, which handles every monster), it's actually possible to play that kind of game.

It adds a completely new experience to Wesnoth, something that is perhaps difficult to configure, but a wonderful thing when played... and also a great buffer between the normal campaigns.

Wha.... what??!! You can recruit units in that scenario??? OMG I was just sitting around with 300 gold after buying all my townspeople units poison for their melee weapons. For some reason it never dawned on me that you can still recruit new units in that level! Maybe that's why I found it difficult... :p

just make use of apple's new in game DLC to make more money for additional levels & content update, I don't mind to pay for a good game tho.

Yeah, I imagine that probably made it a bit more challenging.

I don't think Kyle is going to do that. I imagine he'll make a pretty penny from Wesnoth itself - and he deserves it, doing all this work for the port. But when it comes to the add-on content, putting that in sounds relatively easy (compared to pulling off a port of the whole game), and those who did the majority of the work (making said content) wouldn't be seeing money from it.

So, I hope the plan is to leave the game at five bucks, and make the updates and content free.

    How's the beta going?
Could you at least have some website where you put vague messages about when the game will be released? :D

i think we are in the "first" beta phase, the game is playable but it still needs a lot of work, on most devices it requires too much free memory which is the main problem atm (it should be fixed soon i hope), Kyle also said he'd add some stuff like map zooming etc, so it will take some time...

  17. Hopping it will arrive soon...

    Hey,

I don't know if some one already asked in one of the 30 pages I didn't read:
Will it use the same save game format as the original?
So that we could use our own old save games?
And if its not planed to load them, will it be possible for users with jailbreaked devices to get the save games out and into the game?

Is there a vague time lime when it will be published?
Im just so exited since I heard from it.

Oh and what does I have to do to get a beta?

    Greeting from germany, coni

The game does use the same saved game format as the original, however there is no way to get the saved files from the device, unless you have a jailbroken device. If there is enough demand for it, support for synchronized saved games could be added in a future update.

The game should be available by the end of November.
