Saved games are compressed, and can take between 15-40k. You might have missed this from page 18: It has the same same save features as the PC version: - you can save the game at any time - auto-saves at start of each turn - configurable maximum number of auto-save slots - saves game replay at end of level, to relive past glories or learn from your epic fails - compressed save files - load game screen includes name of save, date/time, campaign, etc - you can delete the save files you don't need
This game is worth, like, $60. Whatever they set it as will be a steal (and hey, since you can get it for free on the PC, it's already a steal). Heck, I'd pay just to be a beta tester. I want Wesnoth to set the bar for what you can get on the iPhone.
The launch price will be $4.99, and a free version will also be available. The final optimization phase is going well, but it's a lot of work... On Friday I'll announce details how you can enter to win a spot in the closed beta. All beta testers will also get a promo code for the full game!
Oh cool that works for me even thought i would have been willing to pay more. I'm assuming this one will not be first come first serve?
Sounds great, $5 is great price for a game with all this content. Can't wait to see the beta contest.
Good news Kyle... I didn't see BfW on the top of the list for a day or so and got worried that I just saw this all in a dream. =) Munkie!
Question - will we need to use our PC to get the Beta if we become Beta testers? My home computer just fried its motherboard or something so we're sending it in for repairs. If all we need is the I-phone, I'm still good to go.
In order to be a beta tester for *any* iPhone game you'll need a functioning PC or Mac that you can use to sync your iPod/iPhone to iTunes. A developer will usually e-mail the app and a mobile-provision file to you that allows iTunes to install it on your device.
Wow sorry to hear that, hopefully you'll get the PC back soon. That reminds me, I should go do a backup right about now!
Looks great, I've always been intrigued by the computer version. One thing bothers me, though: a lot of those screenshots are loading screens. Please tell us we won't be looking at them for long periods of time?
That's a good question... When i first had the port working, it took 5 minutes just to start a game! Obviously I had to do a lot of optimization and caching. The original PC game uses huge xml files that the end user is able to customize, but since this isn't needed for the iPhone port, I was able to speed things up considerably. Needless to say, this is one area where I spent a lot of time optimizing, so that the load times are acceptable. Right now I am also finishing up the game framerate optimizations. Again, when the game was first running, it was like 4fps on the device! I now finally moved everything to openGL hardware accelerated rendering, to get the best possible framerates. Not an easy port, to be sure!
BETA CONTEST! The beta for Battle for Wesnoth is set to begin soon! The lucky winners will be chosen at random. Remember, all beta testers will get promo codes to get the full game for free when it comes out! How to enter: 1. Add "Battle for Wesnoth" to the "Waiting For:" section in your signature (or equivalent). Click on "User CP" link at the top of the page, then "Edit Signature". 2. Post in this thread what is your favorite unit, and why. (see http://units.wesnoth.org/1.6/C/mainline.html) Bonus points for hotlinking the image
Here goes -- hope I get chosen. Favorite Unit -- Mage of Light Such a good all-around character to have in the arsenal. Had dramatic healing ability for those around you, can handle his own in both hand-to-hand combat as well as ranged attacks. So many different strategic routes to take with this character on your team.
Elvish Enchantress: Completely badass! Undeniably hot and deadly. Besides being enchantingly beautiful she has great range and powerful (not to mention spellbinding) magic.
