Who said boycott? I'll be buying this on day one and reccomending that my friends do so as well. It's just that a split playerbase is a pretty bad thing, and should be avoided if at all possible.
The great thing about Wesnoth, PC version and now iPhone, is that it is in active development and just keeps getting better. And with all the content available, as well as active multiplayer, you find yourself coming back to the game again and again. With the iPhone version in particular, I'm sure the community will continue to provide valuable feedback to improve the game and suggest new features. One good example is the suggestion of synching your saved games with your desktop version of Wesnoth, so you can continue your campaigns on the go. And for the people who only play Wesnoth on the iPhone, since each update will also introduce a new full campaign to play, there is a very good reason to get the free upgrades! You can think of it as the Pocket God of the TBS games, this game has huge staying power and should always have a home on your device!
Hey, That syncing with desktop is a cool idea. Wouldn't it be a problem though, considering the desktop will have way more campaigns? So you'll only be able to sync up the limited campaigns that are in the iDevice version. I do understand that it makes business sense to piecemeal out the campaigns (each update bumps you back on Apples 'whats new' list), but it is a bit of a strange decision considering the open-source roots of Wesnoth.
Well, the "What's New" list has recently changed to only show new apps, not updated apps. This is great, because many devs were doing fake/useless updates just to stay high on that list. That cluttered up the app approval queue as well as the what's new list. But as for Wesnoth on iPhone, it turned out that custom campaigns need to be optimized by hand to work on the iPhone version. Generate a pre-cache file for the scripts and config, resize the story art and portraits, combine unit graphics into a texture atlas... It means that players can't download their own content, but at least the custom content will get added back in over time, starting with the most popular addons. If the iPhone version is popular, I can also see people creating custom campaigns with the iPhone in mind, which tends to be easier to play with small maps and less units.
Hey Kyle, Really, I didn't know that change to the New Apps section. Thats 'a good thing' IMO. Useless updates suck. I wasn't aware it was a RAM issue getting the campaigns done. My mistake. It does make sense now. I seem to remember you saying you were getting new artwork done for some of the campaigns. Will that artwork be contributed back to the main Wesnoth branch? Anyway, this may be out tomorrow? I will buy both this and Rogue Planet for sure It seems TBS games may be back in style!
I'm really liking the idea of being able to sync games between my computer and my iphone, and this will definitely be an insta-buy from me.
Why isn't this game receiving any hype? I thought a game with deep strategy plus leveling hero's within a massive content packed TBS would have TA members mentally salivating. Hmm....maybe because Rogue Planet was just released, but it's content and depth could not possibly compare with this. But that's enough rambling, I hope this comes out soon. Oh ya, the main reason for this post is b/c the thread was stuck at 66 posts, maybe its jinxing the approval process.
I think there has been a fair bit of buzz on TA about Wesnoth. Perhaps there isn't more because: i. not published by a major label (ie. Gameloft like RP is) ii. its a free game on PC/Mac so everyone who actually wanted to play it badly can already try it free. Still I think it will do pretty well on iPhone - it compares well against the competition.
I don't know about you, but I'm off to buy Rogue Planet and finish the game before Wesnoth comes out!
Hahaha. Nice post. I'd like to get "Rogue Planet", too, but I'm fairly engrossed in "Beneath a Steel Sky" at the moment.
Haha, indeed. It's not like we have to choose one or the other - you can chew on Wesnoth forever, and do games like Rogue Planet when you need a break. So Kyle, while you're making our dreams into reality, any chance you can convince your twin brother to port Final Fantasy Tactics over?
