Are you suspecting that we got together and decided to see how many people we could sucker? It is as great as we have said, and it is worth the high price. I can't think of a single cheaper game in the genre that will give nearly as many hours of entertainment.
Still not sure whether to get this. I know plenty of you have declared how good it is but can you explain WHY this is superior to Highborn for example? Thanks....
Well, the campaign content is about 200 times longer and has a massive amount of variety. I think the two games are kinda similar, but BfW has a lot more of a tactics feel to it. You control single units and you can gain advantages based on terrain, time of day, and type of unit. It's complex but also pretty easy to get into. The storylines are epic, the art is great, and it's just a very tactically interesting game. I really cannot figure why anyone who likes TBS wouldn't pick it up for 99 cents. I found it a huge bargain at $4.99.
I wouldn't mention Highborn and Wesnoth the same day, except that I just did. Don't just take out word for it, go and download a free computer vesion of the game here http://www.wesnoth.org/ and have a look.
I finally took the plunge and it looks decent so far, a lot more in depth than Highborn. However, I have a couple of questions..... 1/ On the 2nd tutorial mission I have 5 units in the castle costing 1 gold per turn, 2 gold given free meaning I'm losing 3. No problem, this is what it says in the text, buuuuut when I move my player to the village alongside it says I get 1 gold per turn extra. This means I'd be losing 2 per turn but the text in the tutorial says it's down to 1 loss per turn. Clearly this doesn't add up, what am I missing? 2/ How do you change the difficulty?
Heyhey! Glad you got the game. Cuz man, I cannot tell you how much more worthwhile this is than Highborn. The latter, while some might say it has higher 3D 'production values", is simply not as good of strategy rpg as Wesnoth which has a lot more tactical factors to consider, unit growth and a ridiculous wealth of content to explore. I will buy this game repeatedly to show my appreciation for the value it has over most app store fodder. Anyway, I almost forgot you had questions =p 1) Different villages, towns and castles have different gold values...for instance some are worth 1 extra gold and some are worth 2 extra. Its a good system...makes you choose to deploy strategically and this will mean much more when you got some kick butt level 2 and 3 (and 4!?) minions. 2)You change the difficulty at the time you select your campaign...however, as you are on the tutorial, there is no difficulty to select. Once you finish tutorial, try the next campaign such as South Guard and you will be able to select from three levels of hardcored-ness.
1--Not sure...are you counting your commander? Anyway, managing gold hasn't been, for me, something that takes a huge amount of calculating, it's just sort of a control to keep you from spamming new units until you're unbeatable. If you fill your citadel 2-3 times before launching your offensive, most times you will be alright. The nice thing is that you can always go back a few autosaves if you muck up...but do try to beat the scenarios with a relatively low number of units so you don't come out with too little gold near the end of the campaign. 2--after you've completed the tutorials you can start a new campaign. There are tons to choose from, anyway, and once you've chosen one you can select the difficulty. Enjoy!
Yep, I haven't played much of Highborn (only the first two scenarios) but it does seem extremely dumbed-down compared to Wesnoth. I still think Wesnoth is pretty approachable though, if you start with The South Guard...definitely the best TBS you can get on the app store.
mini-BUMP! Hopefully Kyle will have time to update Wesnoth once he is finished crunching down on getting Shadow Era released...not to mention his new fulltime job of Baby Daddy. I wonder if all the extra pixel estate of these new screens can be transformed into some cool new GUIs with expanded info or whatnot.
Aw you hit the nail on the head with that one..."dumbed-down" is a succinct way to put it. Not that I'm trying to pupu the developer's efforts on an original game, but from the complexity, difficulty, AI and yes even the writing Highborn does not a Worthy Wesnoth Some Other W-word make. Other strat-RPGs look interesting tho, such as Rogue Planet (FF Tactics looking) and War of Eustrath. Oh and hey, speak of the FF Tactics but thats supposed to come out sometime for iOS as well!
My friend, it is said all good things must eventually give way to even gooder-er things. Like the spacy BfW episode 2 icon...my personal fave =) *unrelated, but I just glanced at your "faves" list and it indeed shows good taste...in fact last week I was glued to Rogue Touch til I realized I was NEVER getting outta there after finding the damn amulet...stupid trick floors =( But anyways...NO Space Miner?!?!?
Rogue Planet is pretty good, but not great due to the maps being somewhat uninspired in their design. Eustrath on the other hand is very good and certainly worth a purchase, although it plays more on the RPG side of the equation than the tactical side most of the time. I prefer Wesnoth over all the others though, for story, strategy and obviously content. Who knows what has become of FFT though...I don't! There was also a rumor of Fire Emblem coming as well, but I don't know whether or not that has been substantiated yet. I suspect...not. Edit: I do like Space Miner...but it's not in my top 10 or whatever that list numbers. It is a great game however.
To me Rogue Planet was a bit of a disappointment. Can't remember what it was but I didn't play it too far. War of Eustrath on the other hand was a brilliant game. Final Fantasy Tactics.. Oh dear, I will be pissing honey when it gets released. FFT for PS1 is still one of my top 5 games ever on any platform. As for Wesnoth I lost interest in it a while ago. It was because of the randomness factor. I wouldn't mind if it were true randomness in the fights but the odds always seemed to be against me. The battle outcome predictor would often say it's 80% likely I will win this and that fight but a 6th try still failing to win the fight makes me a sad panda. Been playing this game on my computer as well and one time I decided to create some wacky overpowered characters and solo a few campaigns. There's no way of coming back from such uberness so I had to quit playing the game for a time. Still, I think this is one of the best games in AppStore and definitely well worth the money spent having nearly limitless playing hours.
I love me some Fire Emblem...but yea the chance of it coming to iOS (legally) is nil. As a Nintendo property, they would never develop software for competing platforms...and I think its safe to say that iOS is a bona fide competitor. Hell, probably the biggest threat they have ever faced in the mobile sector, period. FF Tactics, I saw some low quality development shots of it on TA a couple months ago...nuthin since. Square Enix with their resources could afford to push the pace of development tho.
