+1 to this. Batman characters, IB engine, some unique attacks and gadgets...I'm there as long as the framerate and controls are at or close to IB quality.
Maybe I'll play this until Infinity Blade II gets another round of big fixes. As the guys said in the TA podcast, maybe this Infinity Blade-style gameplay is becoming more of a genre in itself like platforming or FPS rather than being cheap knock-offs, although some are better than others.
Why is it that everyone is comparing this game to the console games and wishing it was more like those instead of taking the game for what it is? Did you guys know you were gonna get a batman game? No! How about we wait and see how this game pans out on it's own and then make judgments. You didn't have your hopes up because there was no hype for it, so really, we should be glad that a batman game has finally graced the appstore, and might I say one that looks pretty cool. Seriously, those graphics are awesome! Yes it may be trying to imitate IB, but dang, it looks like they did a good job at it! Can't wait for more actual impressions
Basically, folks want a copy (or at least something very close) of the console version of Batman: Arkham City for $5.99. The fact that that is never going to happen doesn't stop folks from raging about it. Whether the game as is is worthwhile is immaterial: according to these folks, iOS gamers have been done a great injustice. As has been demonstrated time and time again, it's easy to make any game sound boring by describing it in boring terms (heck, I could do it right now with Arkham City if I were so inclined). I would suggest that folks hold off any conclusions about the game until we hear more impressions as it releases world wide. Personally, I find it troubling that Warner Bros kept this from reviewers hands and offered up no previews, etc. I don't see anything inherently wrong with a Batman game focusing on combat (one of the best Batman games ever was a beat-em up, after all) instead of stealth or what passes for "detective work" in Arkham Asylum/City.
I like this game, I think it's a great game The boss fights have some variety too them and this game runs extremely smooth (unlike IB) which is a shame that there's no free roaming Yes the game can get boring just like IB The only console games I play are SF4 and MVC3 so I'm not disappointed how this game turned out
BOTH!! I can't NOT get IB2, but I just gotta get this.... My sollution: Wait until IB2's problems are fixed, get ARKAHAM TONIGHT!!
Agree. I think WB should switch the tactics: instead of going stealth on media, and lands a beat-em-up game based on the Batman franchise, it should have done a beat-em-up on media and lands us a stealth game. Nightworld and many have proven stealth works on mobile platform, all it needs is a big name attached and a proper atmosphere.
I would pay $10 easily for a Nightworld-esque game featuring Batman. But, this is a totally different dev. This is Netherrealm, so it's natural they focused on making it a fighter. For all of the comparisons to IB, yes it features tap and swipe based fighting. However, the main difference is that its a fist-fighting game, not a sword fighting one. It's better they went with gestures than with buttons in my opinion, gesture controls are adapted to the system better. Plus, it seems that many of Batman's cool gadgets have been thrown into the mix, which is pretty cool. From the gameplay on this thread, its seems pretty repetitive, but I feel that the boss fights will definitely mix things up. And if this is anything like the console Arkham city, there will be plenty of bosses, and I feel like these boss fights might make the game worth it. Not to mention the possibility of a story... Still, I haven't played, so I can't come to a conclusion yet.
Let's wait and see. Wracking a bunch of goons (note the pural) in back in Arkham Asylum using a single button is cool, but it wears off after a while and the developer is wise enough to add stealth and detective elements early enough to keep the player in. I would wait for the day when a better stealth-style game comes in -- I understand it will not be as large as console game.
It's not lame in the slightest. Why do you think movies have trailers and songs have samples? To give people an impression of the product before they spend their money. It's perfectly reasonable that such impressions may be negative, and all people are doing is sharing their thoughts on the subject. Mindless or biased fanboyism is one thing, but this is completely different. Maybe they'll come back later on and admit they've completely changed their view on the game, but that doesn't mean they were wrong to have a different opinion at first glance. This business is all about first impressions and it's pretty likely that developers would actually want to know what they're doing wrong with their marketing. Interesting point, because (personally) I'm not comparing it to the console versions so much as the combat style that is used in the console versions. I know the game could never compare to the full experience, but the combat definitely could, and the way it's done in Arkham City has garnered so much praise from critics it's actually quite amazing they didn't attempt to utilize it here.
Here you go. This should make everyone happy: http://m.kotaku.com/5866154/play-batman-arkham-city-la-noire-and-other-aaa-games-on-your-ipad EDIT: And no sooner do I post this than I click over to see Jared's front page article!
I'm not sure why everyone is so defensive about this game. Usually there's a reason no one hears about a game release, it's lame. I've been playing games for so damn long(since Atari 2600) and although I'm no guru on games, we do have hunches and gut feelings about a game. Just like a movie that has a lame trailer. It only takes about 10 seconds to see if you will like it or not. I love IB1-2 so much. I would've thought a brawler like that with batman would be great. But something is telling me it sucks. I hope I'm wrong.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/batman-arkham-city-lockdown/id459850726?mt=8 Out in the US. Bought. TW doesn't announce it's games. LEGO Harry Potter and Scribblenauts Remix were both surprise releases and some of the best titles available on the iOS.
