It's nothing like Bastion, this is a turn based game.
Both are awesome tough, and with a strong story component.

Not quite. Bastion is an action game, where you move your character real time and fight other characters. It's all about dexterity, quick reflexes and reactions.

This plays more like a board game, where you take turns with the opponent, perform some moves, he then does the same, and it's more about planning and strategizing. It's a turn based strategy game (TBS), similar to Xcom, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Ravenmark. Or chess.

    Hope this helps.

The game automatically saves on last 'hotspot'.
Without spoiling the game...let's just say you move around a map...generally the game saves at every destination and after every choice you make, or before a fight.
I never quit the game during a fight, but I doubt it saves mid fight (not sure if the PC version does it).
To be honest it was never a problem.
Just to be sure when I'm done with a session, I just qui to menu (this forces a save)....but I never had a problem anyway.

    The game support perfectly iCloud.
I generally play on iPad and occasionally on iPhone...and I have all synced.
Game support 5 different profiles, and each profiles contains ALL the auto save game.
I'm at the end and I have a TON of saves....on each location, each chapter, etc...probably to let me get back and change some of the key decisions even if I'll replay it from scratch on hard next time.

    On iPad Air is GLORIOUS.

    Thanks!

Final question: after reading the thread, there were some comments on low resolution assets on the iPad 3. Is that confirmed, or was it just perception?

Meaning, is it the same on iPad 3 and 4?

    Cheers!

    Eh I'm sorry...I can't answer that.
All I can say it's that on iPad Air the game is just perfect on everything.
On an ancient iPhone 4S everything seems identical BUT some icons that are lower res, loading times are very long (meaning I play there just fights...not the story parts or the settlements parts) and of course everything it tiny.

More than graphics (which is great even on a 4S) what bothers me in a older device are loading times (almost instant on Air, very long, even 30 seconds long on 4S) but I have no clue how is that on iPad 3/4.

Hi. You said this is tiny on the 4S. Is it still readable? Bear in mind I found parts of XCOM unreadable on the 4s :)

What a game... I just finished it, it's such a marvellous game. It reminds me my childhood, when i was playing at ultima VII, or zelda, a link to the past. Everything is absolutely perfect. With waking mars, it's my favorite game since i own an ipad. I want to read about nordic mythology, the vikings, and countries in the north. I will buy the original soundtrack, and i just discovered the art of eyvind Earle, so beautiful.

    What a game.

I do not play a lot on 4S, expecially the dialogues due to the loading times, but I found the text perfectly readable (I have a good sight...no problems with Xcom or Warhammer Quest).
Text on icons is REALLY tiny tough.
If you find XCOM too tiny...I'm not sure.

Thanks for that. I'll just have to retry XCOM on my 5s and see how I get on before I buy this.

Can't really agree with the TA review, yeah its story driven but the story is lazy and you can loose your best fighters and supplies to random events which can severely gimp you.

The combat system is so-so, the classes are unbalanced (most are near useless, some totally dominate) the UI is horrible and clearly not optimized for touch screen, the leveling/ supply system is aggravating, there are WAY too many loading screens for a game like this (practically every screen change has a loading time, just going from the market to the hero screen takes way longer than it should).
If this is a 5 star game then what is Xcom? A 50 star game?

Still this is a way better turn based game then all that free to play crap thats been released recently. It also looks nice if you're into that sort of thing.

I'm just curious, how many chapters was it? I have been playing for a while now and thought the game was going to end twice already lol. Use a spoiler tag if you do :D

The TA review turned this on its head by calling the direct PC/tablet port of the interface "a huge compliment towards a universally solid interface design", completely overlooking or missing out on the fact that these comments referred to the iPhone version, not the iPad interface. TA reviewers are usually very astute, and in touch with the sentiments of their community, so this came as a surprise to me.

I will see if i can get a refund for this. Why? because there is too much loading! you want to look at your warriors? 20 secs loading. you finished? take another 30 secs to return to the rest screen. you enter a dialogue? loading. you finish a dialogue? loading.. i spent more time waiting than playing, i will keep this on the pc where it belongs...

The only thing I don't like about this game is the unexpected deaths of your best fighters. They come with no warning or anything at all. All that renown spent on levelling them up....gone in an instant with no way to fix it. Not to mention, once an important character dies (at least in the beginning), there is no connection or sympathy for the death at all. From the player or other characters. It's basically a "oh well, moving on" sort of thing.

Everything else though I find truly fantastic...this game is incredible.

Man, you are missing some of the best elements of the game. I wasn't going to respond to chiller just cause he is completely off his rocker, but you sound a little more sane. You are supposed to feel the loss of your guys if you make the wrong choices. It was made this way by design.

Each time I have come up against a 'lose a fighter' conversation, 2 things happen to make it obvious that the wrong choice is going to be catastrophic and you are about to lose your dude.

    1. The picture of one of your teammates pops up even though they arent talking. This is pretty much the only time it will happen.

    2. the text tells you that the person is in a very precarious position. i.e. A DREDGE JUST JUMPED UP BEHIND YOUR FRIEND, YOU MUST ACT QUICKLY

These two things are very obvious and a huge warning once you recognize the pattern. Also, if you really really need to fix it, you can always load the game from a previous save if it was too big a loss to bear.

The reason that people don't seem to react is that people are dying left and right everywhere. It's all part of the very depressing story line, it would be out of character for your team to react differently than other parts of the storyline. I wont go into more detail to avoid spoilers etc, but it really is an important element of the story. This isnt happy fun time RPG and the choices you make MATTER!

Edit: actually I think the pocket tactics review is missing this point as well. He criticizes the combat system that allows a small number of people a more equal shot at a larger group, but without that system, you wouldnt be able to lose teammates and still play on. it's easy to see something that is different and not realize that it's different by design.

Well when the TA review itself says

then it does seem a bit strange to give the game an equal or better score to the ones mentioned.

Although I guess when you are only rating games out of 5 rather than out of 100 it makes it difficult to make fine distinctions between two games you think are great.

Its not that XCOM is an "objectively better" game (personally I thought it sucked, especially compared to the original version), its that the reviewer mentions that he thinks the gameplay isn't quite as good as other similar games, then gives it top marks anyway. Final Fantasy Tactics only got 3.5/5 on TA, although in fairness its touchscreen interface is absolutely awful.
