It's not that bad. I don't think I've ever played the original game, and while I do think the UI isn't very good, I don't find this almost unplayable.
I may have been a bit harsh. The area I was in seams to have been buggy (party training with the illusionist in Candlekeep). It appeared to be causing selection issues, but it was actually and aborting commands before the char completed the action. For example I would tell a char to attack or cast and nothing would happen or I would tell them to walk to a location and they would stop after a few steps and just stand there while being attacked. Still the game is buggy and it's not a bad idea for him to wait a bit for an update if he was already on the fence for iOS6.
You people are crazy harsh. Think about this for a second: It's a 1.7gb game on your iPad. Its huge and complex. Will it have some quirks / bugs? Sure, but I'm sure the devs will do their best to squash them. The game is not unplayable at all, nor is it the worst UI ever. It's very playable, and blows my mind that its working on a tablet.
Ok, iOS upgrade done! Surprisingly quick - it's the first time it doesn't completely wipe my device and then reinstall the upgrade. Now just 1h left for the BG download to finish Thank you all. I'll likely be reading the manuals in the meanwhile.
why would it blow your mind? My iPad 2 is at least twice as powerful as the G3 I played this on originally. It is clearly a PC port of an old game. A better-than-average port I think, but lots of quirks from the bad old days got ported over too. I think the comparison to Avernum is right on.
Well I have no idea how to play this. I am in the tutorial and have been asked to cast one of Xan's spells on Belt. So I figured out how to open the Mage spell page where it shows a load of weird symbols but no clue as to what does what. If I click on a memorized spell there it seems to just go away. Nothing seems to actually cast a spell and I cannot figure out how to do this. Possibly the most confusing and poor tutorial for a game I have ever encountered. Particularly since everyone says how complex and sophisticated this game is - a good tutorial or at least a highly intuitive interface is absolutely essential. Hate to say this but I am very close to just deleting this. Jamie
I bought BGEE just to show my support, I've played the saga several times back in the days and with all the mods more recently and had no intention to play it once more. Now I'm not sure anymore. I was a bit concerned after reading the PC bug ridden experience...WOAH I'm impressed. 4 hours later I'm super impressed...the port is fantastic. Not a single problem so far...on the contrary it's incredibly slick (iPad 3). I can't belive it's so good graphically on the retina resolution, considering they had just the low res assets from 15 years ago. The modded vanilla game looked much worse on a 720p TV (where I played last time). I really wonder what they could do with an original ip, creating the assets today.
During the tutorial?! My problem is more that it tells me to use the cast spell button then leaves it to me to figure out what that button is. And the spell list is absolutely pointless - why show symbols with no indication as to what the spells are or what they do? So frustrating.
Tap spells at random until you fill up the memorised spells list. Then tap and hold for 2 sec or so on a spell on the main spell list, not the memorised spell list. When you lift your finger, you'll see details of the spell.
Choose the character and then press the hint button, the hint screen shows what the spell symbols are of that character. It's somewhat counterintiutive I think, because on the PC version, you could just highlight a spell and it would say what it is.
When I got this game for the PC, it was on, IIRC, NINE Cd-roms. IF you would have told me then that one day you could download this in under 5 minutes (decent broadband speed here, at least on the DL side), I would have spit in your face and told you to quit the moonshine.
When I'm on any other screen than the main map screen the hint button isn't there though? The only way I can find to see the details of the spell is by tapping and holding them in the spellbook. How do I see what spells/skills characters that don't have spellbooks have? I assume the ranger can cast berserk (as it is listed as his favourite spell), but I can't see his list of spells anywhere. Also how do I see what the status effects on my characters are and what they do?
It still works, but I bought iWesnoth which recently released, which is a newer version with a lot of fixes and it also has server access to player made content, so it was worth the price to essentially buy a newer version of the same game!
