Wow iPhone? Loved Baulders gate on the pc back when I was younger, looking forward to hearing feedback as to the controls on iphone
I want to thank you for tempting fate sufficiently for this to happen. Reminds me of how every time I buy a handheld, a new version is announced the next week.
Lol, Shawn have you tried on phone yet. ? Is it painful or tolerable? I'm not at all picky about fps and skipping or even controls... But my eyes aren't what they used to be unfortunately
It's really, really tight. Small icons, and the default text size is microscopic. You can adjust the font size up in the menu so that helps with reading the text, and you can of course zoom in on the play area, but the icons are really hard to poke at.
With a 5.5 inch screen there's no more excuse that games like hearthstone is ipad only. 4.7 might be pushing it
Haha. I never liked to play games on my old iPad. Much like you, I'd be enthusiastic to see games go universal. I actually couldn't see the point in games like Bastion forcing me into using my iPad. I think that everything should be universal. Just with a warning for some games. BG:EE + 2 included that they are not easily optimized for play on iPhones and the experience might be occasionally frustrating. I'd like to see Shadowrun go universal. It'd be better adapted for iPhones than BG, I think.
I bought this on iPad a long time ago, and i was interested in trying it on my iPhone, but when i go for download it shows the price and asks me if i want to buy it. Has anyone seen this? Are there two different versions or is this just an Appstore hiccup?
Yeah same here, i thought the 'advanced' edition was basically an update to the original Baldurs Gate i bought, or were they 'sneaky' and created a new app for it ? Ages ago i would have loved Baldurs Gate to have gone universal but i'm not going to free up 1.7 gig on my iphone just to play it for 5 minutes and think 'arrrgh its way too small' ! I prefer gaming on my iphone but i think this universal update is just really for iphone 6/6s as that should work very well on those larger screens
Let's talk about that again if you can actually manage to get into late game where every decision and every missed or failed move(which is likely to happen cuz it already happen on iPads) can result into a complete wipe of your party lol
I think this might be the most terrible desktop-to-iPhone port I have ever had the great misfortune of failing to control properly. And still I don't regret the purchase, and I'll play it for years to come. That's the power of Baldur's Gate. Overhaul's several years of clumsy, unendearing incompetence notwithstanding.
But its no coincidence that a universal version has appeared the day after Apple announce the large iphone 6 and the massive iphone 6s. To me this is really for the iphone 6s, i wouldnt expect to play this on my iphone 4s sadly.
Since it is available for my iPhone 5S, I expect it to. And it would, smoothly, with some none too ambitious adjustments to the UI. This is not a problem with the source material and port performance, or the viability of this genre in particular on this device; animations and transitions run smoothly, and all operations which are not directly related to the GUI work eminently well. Controlling the movement of characters by tapping the ground work well, even with a full party. Even the sidebars are acceptable, if clumsy and not iPhone-optimized at all (and still ripe for an overhaul). The problems arise when I need to interact with the UI elements at the bottom of the screen, as well as scroll arrows, text fields, and other minor UI elements. Their size and positioning means a lot of miss-taps and unresponsive screen hammering, and the resulting and frustrating reloads that follow from Cloudkilling my party instead of Animal Summoning-three up Sarevok's pretty behind. Even some lists have to be tapped instead of swiped to scroll. And woe to she who presses the sidebar minimization button; the button to returnt the bar to the screen cannot currently be tapped at all. Coupled with many clumsy minor implementations that suffuse the game in a dirty sheen of platform emulation (much like the recent iPhone port of Star Realms), where no elements are optimized (movies are even played in the default iOS system player, and the main menus do not fill the widescreen. Neither important in themselves, but perhaps indicative of substandard optimization work), and the game retains functions from the desktop version that have no bearing on the iOS port (serial protocol for online co-op, anyone?), there is little about the port itself other than the fact that it runs that is indicative of quality, or of any significant amount of work put into the porting process. There is nothing about Baldur's Gate in general which would make it unplayable on an iPhone; the port of its younger sibling KOTOR (and other similar titles, such as The Shadow Sun, as well as realtime squad-action titles with controls similar to BG) illustrates this succintly. Beamdog/Overhaul Games have just neglected to do any interface optimization. When the EE of BG was first announced, I expected truly great things (including a full graphical remake, but I will admit that there is value in keeping the old style and pixels around). It took Beamdog/Overhaul nearly two years after release to polish the game to the very minimum level of quality and modernization I'd have expected from the initial release. Hopefully, they'll invest similar effort into gradually polishing the iPhone iteration. But considering the lack of iPad-specific optimizations we've seen since the tablet release, I get the feeling the only patches we'll see are those that incorporate further polish to the PC application (something I am thankful for, but not something that makes the iOS version in particular more attractive).
Picked this up as soon as i saw it had iPhone support and well...the experience isn't very nice on the 5S. In my 1 hour of playing through the tutorial, i've already had 4 crashes. Also, the buttons, especially the spells, are really small you nearly can't see the difference between the icons.i dunno how i would differentiate a regular cure light wounds vs critical wounds when i get the spell aside from the spell level. And the movies? LOL! Wish they optimized it further before they made it compatible with the iPhone Yep i did that particularly with the right sidebar and i had to reload/restart just to get it back. I couldn't tap the button to return the sidebar no matter how much i tried
Well i thought i'll give it a go on my iphone 4s. I deleted GTA San Andreas to free up the space, installed Baldurs Gate. Put the font size right up to the max and i must admit it wasnt too bad. I only played it for about 5 minutes but went in and out of buildings, pressed icons okay (yeah they're tiny !) but it was amazing having it on my iphone. I think some of the later levels with the orcs etc might be a pain when you have quite a few people in your party and you want to try selecting/moving them at once etc. But i reckon its not too bad. Once i complete/get bored of San Andreas i'll give Baldurs Gate a go. Again a huge factor is that its incredible i could have Baldurs Gate on my iphone but as it takes up a large chunk i want to make sure i'll have the time to play it a lot. But i think its playable, i didnt struggle when i did it
