I can't disagree more. I too am new to BG, and its definitely living up to the hype. This is a VERY deep game, and it doesn't hold your hand to walk you through. There are 2 100 page manuals on the website for the game that really explains everything. There is no way all that info could be presented in game. Obviously there are bugs with doors and frame rate issues but nothing I've encountered is game breaking. I'm very happy with this game, so much so I deleted every other rpg on my ipad...except TWEWY. Very few RPGs are this deep. Beamdog did an awesome job bringing this to iOS.
The graphics look old but I can only recommend Avadon. Or if you are into open worlds, Avernum: Escape from the Pit. Note that you can get free demo versions of Spiderweb's games for Windows or Mac OS X from their web site so you don't have to buy blind. The reason is that they apparently don't have the 3D models anymore, so they would have to re-create everything from scratch. It's not a very good reason for a $20 game (since this also applies to PC) but it's what they say. (Personally, I don't care... I just zoom out...) The help screen (question mark button) will tell you that this is the "return to game" button. You use it every time you want to close some character screen, spell book, and so on. It's horrible, but if you pause the game you can try until you get the correct visual feedback (one target cross, as opposed to one per party member) so at least your party won't keep wandering around the stairs. You can't jump around, you have to do the steps in order. So after selecting your sex, you need to select your portrait and confirm it, then you can select a class, and so on.
Sakinnuso - I totally get what you're saying, and to some extent I agree with you. While I am an old school gamer, I never played Baldur's Gate, so this game smacked me in the face with its initial difficulty! I'm also playing through the tutorial right now using the stock mage character. I plan to create a pure fighter character for the actual game. I agree with you on the UI issues, but I will say a few things: 1. If you search online, you can find a PDF of the BG manual. I personally found that to be very helpful as I was able to understand how to use the UI. Once I did that, I was able to progress a lot more quickly. Don't get me wrong, the game is still hard, but at least I'm getting the hang of it. 2. As many others have already noted, this is a port of the original game from 1998. It is not a re-imagining of the original game, so what we got a mostly a somewhat optimized version of a 14 year old game. 3. Looking at some of the info on this forum as well as a few other BG sites has helped a lot. I'm going to push my way through this initial steep learning curve because I know there's a great game to be played here. I think we're suffering from the shock of the 14 year time warp. In those 14 years, so much has changed in terms of UI, graphics and gameplay, but the game we got is what we got in 1998 (with tweaks, fixes, etc). I'm not sure that Overhaul could have done incredibly much more without rewriting the entire game from scratch. --DotComCTO
I'm loving it. Must've because I played the original which had it's quirks. Yes going into buildings can be a pain but it was just the same on the pc way back. I can't remember moans about it though. I just got on and played and lived the game. Granted I still have all my manuals which is a big help. People really do need to read and absorb the manuals !
I saw a direct link to the game manual a few pages back but clicking it crashes my touch arcade app. Can someone post the full http address of the info if it's not too much trouble? I'd like to print the whole works at my work but can't access it here. I'm trying to avoid the frustrations noted above as someone brand new to the series. The tutorial process has been a headache so hopefully a manual can streamline things. Thanks in advance
Went back through 20 pages of adoration for the game despite bugs. I'm going to push through it and stick with it. The people love it, and I know that it's the foundation for so many modern RPGs. We'll see. Glad you guys are enjoying it. Guess I'll have to go sort through those .pdfs that you guys recommended.
My tips for those finding it hard... bows . Bows in low level are extremely overpowered for the difficult fights. You get two attacks per round so three fights with bows will bring down the annoying mages images. Or if a polar bear is chasing your one fighter with -2 AC... the others rain in the arrows. Or if you go in a house with spiders... drag them out to be pounded on with bows. Baldur's Gate II is still my favorite. One was great. I do have issues with the port. An arrow and mouse sure is easier looting those corpses... then my big finger. And getting the ring of wizardly... grrrrr... Love the concept of having it on the iPad. Still love the game. And Boo. But I think it's my love that makes me play it... where I would have given up otherwise.
I played both BG games only without the last expansion, trust me, BG1 may not be a big and deep as the sequel, but it is still a great RPG. The story is good, and the interactions between PCs and NPCs are well done. The boss battles are fairer than BG2. It may be a bit hard to get onto it at first, but you will find it enjoyable later. Remember, the pause key is your friend. Side note: yet, I still prefer PS:T in any sense, the initial gameplay was even tougher but the story and setting fits right into the Planescape, not to mention the dialogues. I dream it will land on the (insert the future mobile platform here) one day.
As this week has been an expensive one, I think I'll hold fire on this for the time being. Seems like it needs optimising across the platforms. Stuff like pausing and unpausing to try and get up stairs. I appreciate that this is a port of a 14 year old game which had the same problem, but how much better would it be if this thread was full of the experienced BG players all typing... "Dudes! Anyone else remember how godawful it was trying to get up and down stairs? One tap now and off I go, this is great!" Or have I inadvertently stumbled on the plot twist at the end. turns out the heroes were saving the land from awkward stairs, and on subsequent play throughs the stairs behave?
It really isn't that bad at all, yes it's easier to use the pause button to get it right with the doors and stuff, but the game itself is nothing short of amazing in and of itself, and it's great to be able to play it everywhere. By the way, Trent Oster, President of Beamdog said on Twitter that they're working on the clicking/touch sizing right now. An update will fix that issue.
From the official forums: Trent Oster: "We've just added smart radius to the iPad version in testing. It basically scans the immediate area you touched for enemies, objects, doors, area transitions and if something falls within the radius it chooses the nearest. This makes picking up daggers and clicking to enter buildings a whole lot easier."
Yay! Hope this is implemented soon. I spent hours of my wasted youth playing the original versions on PC and never had any trouble entering buildings like I am on the ipad version. Love this game and just want to be able to play it.

I'm glad I got this and I think it's awesome but I'm not excited for patching because what will I have to delete to make space for the patch.. Oh well a great game that gets better. I'll live.
The 14 year old game doesn't have that problem since it has a mouse cursor. It's strictly a touch interface problem, none of us old players remember any trouble with getting up and down stairs.
Agree, there was, at least for me, never any problem to getting up or down on stairs with mouse cursor. By the way, can i use bluetooth mouse, does game support it as alternative movement device on Ipad?
Well after skipping the confusing tutorial, I love it, its not too hard to play and understand if you've played similar games. One thing id like to know is ,on the right side of the screen by the select all group part there is a lantern like button, what does that do? After the anticlimax that was the tutorial, and getting splattered by the first wolf I met, I now have a full party and am progressing nicely. Loving it!
