What difficulty are people playing on? Are people sticking to the default difficulty or are they bumping it up a notch to keep it in line with the original game?
If you think it's blurry you need stronger glasses. Really. I can see that it isn't blurry, it's not a matter of tolerance. And I've got BG installed on an iPad 2 and iPad 3. Retina is great and all, but that doesn't make everything on a non retina screen blurry.
Call it what you will, but it is a matter of tolerance. I'm way too used to my iPhone now to use any iOS device without retina. I've been spoiled.
A great tip found on the official forums regarding doors, stairs etc. "Anyway, to enter a door simply select your party, the whole party, then pause the game and tap on the door you wish to enter. If you see targeting reticles for your entire party where you tapped you missed the door. If you see only one reticle you have tapped on the correct spot. Unpause the game to enter the door. This has worked every time for me so far." This is really helping me out on the targeting issue.
I'm getting a bug where the game crashes when I click on boo in minsc's inventory, anyone else having this problem? Never mind I see I'm not the only one
Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but, what the heck: plays nicely via splashtop from my PC to my new iPad and my Galaxy Note II. Honestly I can't see paying for it several times over but streaming to the devices I want is quite helpful. Actually considering that I have original discs, then bought the one from GOG and now EE on my pc, I guess I have payed for it sever times
In regard to the targeting issues you really have to zoom in and touch repetitively to actually loot enemys. Same thing with stairs and exit and entrances. I notice if you select like the middle of the stairs or before the exit it usually works better. Im in the mines now due to the iron shortage. Killed some orc guy boss. My two handed sword broke. I kicked my summoner the red hooded guy and got the enchanter who was being held captive in the mine. He has better stats. I really want to ditch the green chaotic evil necromancer zat or whatever his name is. But he comes with the thief. Its a fun game. Keep going back to it. My advice for everyone who layed down 10 bucks and gets the feeling they may not really like this game is to take it slow. Read all the text, make it like a book or comic you like dont rush it. Take 10 minutes and sort out weapons, look around each map. Kill , die reload., kill , kill save etc. you will get alot of exp and gold and get better at combat. My stratagy is to equip all the less than warrior classes with slings or bows and ammo. Just keep them in back. I dont find myself using wizards much, spells are kinda sucky early on. I like the druid fighter chick. She heals good. I would prefer a cleric though. I always charge with my fighters. Im not really sure of the in app purchases, i mean i havent even played as any other class, so im gonna avoid it for a year or so, ill probably play this then back burner it till ff4 release, or star command comes out. Then play it again brand new with new character. But i have to finish it first. Gta vc is nice though, nice dumb fun when your tired of squinting at trolls and stuff.who doesnt like squashing peds with cars?
So annoying... this is such a good game but the Enhanced Edition is such a sloppy product. It plays more like an alpha version. I can deal with the occasional crash, but after they delayed this due to out-of-memory crashes on iPad 1 I didn't expect it to crash about as often (>once per hour) on my iPad 4... come on it even crashes when I tap Boo. There are very basic interface problems leading to workarounds for fundamental stuff such as entering a building or picking up an item on the ground or even attacking enemies. Displaying tooltips by holding your finger for a bit seems like an afterthought because it often (in some cases, e.g. spells in the spell book, always) also does what single tapping the icon would have done in addition to displaying the tooltip. Dragging the main view does the same thing and randomly decides to move your party to the location your finger was at when you lifted it. Features that work in the PC version are only half ported, like quick formations are in the iPad version but rotating your formation isn't. Casting AoE spells, or enemies casting AoE spells, slows the game down to a crawl even on the fastest iOS device available, including the Entangle spell that one of the first NPCs you can add to your party has memorized as a default - how could they have missed this? There are quests that aren't completing, including some that most players will do like rescuing Dynaheir. Party AI overrides everything else and likes to make ranged party members attack in melee. Monster spawns are completely borked in some locations. And as if all the bugs in the actual game weren't enough, I had to scrap my first character after I realized that going back and forth in character creation in one specific place had just kept incrementing her HP.
I'm very frustrated and disappointed. It's proving impossible to enter some buildings. I've tried deleting and reinstalling the game in case the installation was in some way corrupted. I've tried zooming in. I've tried finding "the right spot" to tap. I've tried pausing the game and then selecting the spot to walk through the open doorway. In short I've tried everything I can think of and all the suggestions posted so far by others who are having similar problems. Nothing has worked. There are still buildings I cannot enter. And then there are the issues controlling other party members during combat. It seems like selected actions are canceling themselves once game is unpaused. It's not fun to pause the game, assign actions to your party members, unpause the game and watch most of them stand in place and take no actions. Hope there is a fix soon for these issues. Currently the game is unplayable for me.
Regarding the issue with entering buildings, this have been a problem since 1998 when the game was first released, although its been exaggerated in the iPad release. Solution is to pause the game. Click on the doorway, or where you think there might be a doorway, if multiple target indicators shows, you're missing it. When only one target indicator shows, un-pause the game and you'll enter successfully. There's a lot of buildings where the door doesn't show, and it have been so since the first release, not just on the iPad edition. There's a lot of issues, but for me, when I play the game, I use auto pause for a lot of events and proceed carefully always I don't have many problems. I haven't had any crashing at all on my iPad 3, but a little slowdown from time to time when using AOE spells have been an issue for me.
Sure, being spoiled by the advent of Retina is one thing, but scaring potential buyers away from the game by calling the text "blurry" on non retina devices is another.
Game really does feel like a sloppy port of the PC version...they really needed to make adjustments for touch screen devices. There's still PC options in the game that are grayed out. My main problems are: -Touch sensitivity (I just want to scroll the map but end up telling the group tp go to a location). -frustrating targeting...it seems theres no way to confirm you are attacking something until you unpause the game and wait for the dialogue that says so. -small text selection...a few times Ive hit the wrong response because the choices are so close together and already small. They really should have tweaked this more for the iPad.
I'm amused that people thought it would be any different. It's an emulation of a x year old game...back in the days when tutorials were terrible and a doorstep-sized manual was kept at hand just to play the game lol Those who are about to play we salute you!
So I'm on my way to the inn and on the way my party of four encounter a wolf. The wolf absolutely slays my party. Every time. My archer seems to want to move close in to fire the arrows, despite me moving her away. Just seems they all 'pile in' and fight and ignore my order for them to move elsewhere... And as a result the wolf just picks them apart! Any hints?! If it's this hard to beat the first creature I encounter, this is going to be a very tough game... Also, is there any way I can tell which spell is which when I'm in a battle and need to select one? Should I select the target after I select, for example, Magic Missile - and if so, what feedback does the game give that I've set that target?
Don't know what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't what we got. I've never played Baldur's Gate. Ever. However, when all of the pre-launch talk mentioned improving this for the iPAD, i was expecting things like slight resolution bumps, and an overhaul of the interface. Examples of fantastic interfaces with deep customization/interactivity would be Crescent Games: Pocket RPG, Companions, or even Avadon: The black fortress. About the latter, I didn't play because i thought the graphics were just a tad too old for me to get into the game. My mistake. I didn't realize how CLEAN that game was comparatively. I'm playing the BG:EE tutorial and had to really force myself to get through it. Most of the icons on the left side bar look the same. No real color differentiation. The main character on the screen look like a close-up of digital blocks. If there was any love for the art style before, its certainly gone in this game. The tutorial isn't even clear on how to finish commands. It will tell you to do something, but once completed, how do you get back out to the screen? I had to futz around until i figured out that you must hit that skull thing on the top left of the icon bar. Good luck trying to get your character to path correctly. Going up stairs? that's a game unto itself. I wanted to create a new character, a male mage. I selected 'sex' and 'class' and was stuck there, with my only option being import or retry? what? I'm glad that I purchased this because i wanted to contribute towards sending the message that iOS gamers actually want deeper experiences. 9.99 seemed like a small price to pay for such an acclaimed title. I'll probably be deleting this game, sadly. Waiting patiently for Star Command. Hell, now I might actually give AVADON a try. Or Ravensword 2. Really REALLY wanted to see why this game gets the love. Its a very tough game to get into. It's not because i need the game to be easier, but rather the interface totally ignores UI advances - particularly iPAD ones - of the last 20 years. I guess that's appealling to some. Those choices certainly didn't bring me into the fold.
Did you turn AI on? Seems that's something the AI does... making ranged characters attack in melee range. The other explanation is that you maybe just didn't actually order them to attack, but to move close. If your characters are attacking, they have little attack icons on their character portraits (looking like their weapons). One thing that helps with combat is enabling auto pause for pretty much everything in that options screen. Then on the initial pause, select your entire party (button in the bottom right) and tap the enemy you want to attack. Now they should all have some sort of attack icon showing. If they don't, repeat trying to tap your target until they do. Now select your mages one by one and set up their spells. That way, at least your basic melee/ranged attacks should be set up when you unpause... Spells in your spell quick slots will be named on the second help page (question mark button on the left). Put spells into quick slots by tapping an empty quick slot, or long-tapping otherwise (i.e. hold your finger down a bit to bring up the spell menu instead of casting the spell on the spot). Apart from that, you can bring up a tool tip in the spell book screen by long-tapping a spell there. It's a little clunky and it will also queue the spell for memorization if you have memo slots left, but it's there. You should select the target after a targeted spell. If your character is going to cast a spell, a spell icon will show up in its portrait. For targeted spells it seems the icon only shows up when the target has been set. You select a target by tapping on it in the main view. To select party members, you can also long-tap their portrait, but that also brings up their character screen so you'll have to switch back to the map view after that.
