It was five actually. Plus one for the expansion. I remember how much of a nightmare it was constantly switching between CDs with a 4x speed cd rom...playing it on my computer without any CD switching, plus instant loading, is miraculous eventually the game was compressed to 3 CDs and then 1 DVD, IIRC.
This is my experience as well! I just don't get the disappointment so many seem to be expressing. While there are some hitches with the touch accuracy, the game is otherwise a good translation, and an impressive feat! There is only so much with the interface that they could be to redesign it without having to actually remake the game and overhaul major assets (code and graphics) of the game to make it work. I think some folk s expectations here may be a little too high. While there is room for fixes and improvements, the game is by no means broken, unplayable, or in bad form. Yep! Owned the original at release, bought the expansion on release, and then rebought when they released the DVD version! In fact I broke out my case to install it on my computer in preparation of this releasing on iPad! Sadly, I wasn't going to double dip again and buy the PC enhanced version when my old copy still works just as well! I just don't PC game like I used to anymore, hence why I was so excited about this release!
My first party member constantly looses his weapon. When Ioad the game It vanishes in thin air. Wth? If this persist I will stop playing, because I will be afraid to give him any magilac weapon...
It happened to Minsc, Ajantis and maybe Khalid and they lost their longswords or bastard swords. It happens only to the first party member in order. I'm playing mage/cleric so I need to be behind.
Do you mean you saw most of the screen (except the UI and the characters) turn black? I saw that happen once in Candlekeep. It didn't go away, but it was just in the area I was in. When I moved to another part of the map, it was fine - it was basically like the background imagery of just that one spot disappeared. The game as a whole has been awesome - it's great to return to it! The black pits, while not very deep in story or complexity, is fun for short periods of time. Graphics, sound, etc. are all great. I do have some issues though, as I think have been mentioned. 1) navigation has a problem with setting targets when you drag the screen around - this should never happen, but it happens all the time. Very dangerous in combat and an annoyance when trying to travel long distances. 2) the spell books have no names or descriptions - this is just ridiculous, especially for new players. I remember a lot of them, but not all. I know you can get the spell names for memorized spells by using the help while in the main play area, but that's not enough. 3) you can't split stackables! Absolutely need to be able to do this (and you could in the original) 4) tapping on hot spots (doors, chests, loot, etc.) barely works when zoomed out. At first I thought they weren't working properly in general, but then I discovered it's mostly because of the zoom. This is more just annoying than anything else - it's easy enough to zoom in, but it would be nicer if it worked both ways (and reduce frustration for people just starting). 5) it would be nice if you could rotate formations like you could in the original, but not a big deal. 6) you can't exit out of the level up screen - really need to have this so you can go back and refer to what your character already has before making a choice. I think all of these could be fixed pretty easily, which would make the game truly polished.
Sounds like this is great for players of old but a potful of pants for everyone else. Confusing tutorial, awkward combat, hard to get descriptions of what the obscure little spell shapes are... And the text in the game keeps referring to left-click, right-click and space-bar... Did anyone actually test this game properly?! How were these glaring mistakes not caught?!
This happened to me after I pressed the home button to exit the game and started again while the game was still in the iPads memory. The iPad simply can't handle that. To fix it, exit the game properly, return to home screen and then start the game again, loading your latest save. After this, I simply force shutdown of the game after exiting.
Are you sure it's not because the weapon is destroyed? There's the Iron Crisis as part of the plot and story in the game, and it's normal to get a message of "Weapon not usable", and there's sometimes a broken weapon in the inventory. Maybe you keep loading a game where this has happened to the character? Hmm. There's some people complaining about this on the official forum, so maybe it's not connected to the usual "weapon broken" thing.... Don't know yet if its a bug, or part of the iron crisis, but if you haven't seen a broken weapon in the inventory, then it's most likely a bug, and an ugly one at that...
Right - because of the problem with the iron, swords will sometimes break, and then you'll find the broken sword in the character's inventory.
The black rectangle is a memory issue. Happens when exiting the game, checking mails or somethng and then returning to the game. Force shutdown of the game or exit via the menu in the game, and there's no problem. 1) That's a real and annoying issue. 2) I just found the solution for this after much searching: It's not as easy as hovering the mouse over a spell, but at least it works: Select a character with spells, click the spell icon so the various spells shoes. Then click the "Help" button, navigate to the right in Help, and there's a short description of each spell. Actually more info than the old Tool Tips. I have no idea why this isn't mentioned anywhere, but there it is.. 3) Yes you can. Double tab fast on the stack and you'll get the option to split. 4) Agreed, it should work better than that. 5) Yes, that's an omission, though I never used it in the PC edition myself. 6) Haven't leveled up yet, but if it's true, it's a bummer and needs to be fixed.
Not everyone else... I never got into the original due to disliking the mouse usage (I grew up on the old keyboard based CRPGs, with the Gold Box series being the pinnacle). I've tried several times to get into the original, but that interface drove me nuts. Even with the occasional glitch, I'm finally getting to enjoy the game... and see the DNA that would become KotOR, Dragon Age Origins, etc. Honestly, if the game's not for you, follow up on your threat to delete it and go back to playing Magic. It's what I'd do in your situation. No one is expected to like every "classic".
Basic game tips for new players Right, there's probably some people here new to the world of Baldur's Gate, and the rules of classic AD&D. There's an awesome introduction on the official sites forum. I'm linking to that here, and all credit goes to Winthal who made it, and please say thank you in his thread if you can make use of it, he deserves it. Go here. If you're new to the game, there's a lot of useful tips there, and no spoilers. Please don't be intimidated by the wall of text, as its not compulsory to know all of it to enjoy the game, but there's bound to be something there to help you understand the basic rules and some tips to make your time spent in the Forgotten Realms more enjoyable.
I didn't get the problem after leaving the game - it just happened while playing. Though it could still be a memory issue... Uh, I don't have a help button in the spell screen...? The help button is only available when viewing the gameplay screen. How could I be missing a button?? The only button I see from that lower group is the rest button. The quicksave button doesn't appear either (nor does the pause button, but that makes sense since it's already paused in that screen) - do you get that one? Ugh, ok, yes, I got that, but it took double-tapping like 5 times really fast to get it to work. I also found that double-tapping on the right side of the square seemed to help a bit more (only would take maybe 3 times to get it to work then). Still needs to be better than that though. I'd use it sometimes, particularly if I was going around a corner or something and wanted my melee units to remain in front to protect my ranged units. As I said, it's not absolutely necessary, because you can pull it off by moving each unit one by one - it's more of a convenience than anything. Well, maybe it's another issue like the spell help - maybe there's a button missing? Anyone else able to exit from a level up screen?
Ahh, we're talking about two different things. In the Spell Book screen, you need to tap and hold on a spell for a second, the release, and you'll see a complete breakdown of each spell. Dont tap the memorized spells, as you'll remove them from memory, and will need to rest to regain them. I was talking about the in-game screen where we don't have the Tool Tips were used to from the PC edition, where you could hover the mouse over each spell icon to see the name of the spell, even in combat. On the iPad we need to select the spell icon to show the spells, then press "Help" and navigate to the right to see it.
