August seems pretty quiet for ios, had a few quiet weeks already with not as many releases.

that was in the '90s though. i'm sure there are much better compression methods now than there were then.

I agree that when it was released on 5 cd roms (so was that 640 meg x 5 ?) it doesnt mean the iOS version will be 3 gig.

But i cant see the uncompressed version being less than a gig on iOS, hope it will be but cant see it. Seems its quite common for these 'big name' games nowadays to be 1.5 gig or so on iOS, dont think theres been one over 2 gig though has there ? Think Bards Tale was 1.7.

let's have the real pros sort that out, shall we?

We're projecting around 1.2G for iPad. Just to be sure, try and save 1.5G, you know how projections can go.

    Trent Oster ‏@TrentOster
We're shrinking the install size of the game through compression. Codecs have come a long way in the last 12 years.

    ;)

You missed out the word 'arrogant' - probably a bug in your lossless compression algorithm or something ;-)

Well, I guess my answer is a bit more informative than the lush "not really", arrogant or not.

Hi Trent, A bit worried about the sudden reappearence of Black Isle Studios, will this hinder the release of Balders Gate EE for the ipad? I really hope not.

Good question! I didn't know they resurrected! I think that these dudes already had the legal rights though, so I don't think it will be an issue!

According to Gamespot, Black Isle Studio is recreated by Interplay in name only, and without many, if any, original talent or developers, 18 of which is working together under the name Obsidian now.

I don't think it will have much impact on the industry at all.

    Read about it here:

Yeah, me too. I've spent countless hours on Baldur's Gate, and expect to do it again on my iPad come September. :)

I just preordered the game for Windows on Beamdogs website, saving a couple of bucks in the process.

I just read that it'll be possible to play on pc and continue the session on the iPad. Amazing!

Also, it'll be possible to play BG multiplayer between all supported platforms..
So, in theory, I might one day find myself playing on my iPad with people playing on pc, Mac and android tablets completing the party.

    Cannot wait for Sept. 18!

I also hope Beamdog will be able to show a gameplay video soon on the game in action on the iPad.

News on the size of of the iOS install:

@fr33z33 Yes, 3GB even on iOS. Our compression turned out to have too many artifacts

Bad news for small iPad versions, good news for content quality I guess

I haven't heard this from any official releases; where's the source for this info? Since the desktop version comes with all of the new characters unlocked and the iPad version requires IAP for two of them, I wouldn't think it would be that easy to allow for cross-platform saves.

Yeah, that's a lot of space being used by the game...
Did he mention if that was the combined requirement of the installer file and the installed game? Or do we need 3GB of space for the installer in addition to the installed game?

In any case it's not an issue for me.. I have 16GB free right now, but even if I didnt have enough free space, I would delete just about anything to get this game on my iPad.

It might turn some users of though. That would be a shame.

    And
    http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/07/30/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-will-have-cross-platform-co-op/

There's also info on http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussions somewhere, but I don't have time to trawl through the forums there right now.

I don't know how they'll solve the new characters, but I imagine it might just be doable to go co-op with someone playing a new char even if you haven't unlocked the char for your own use.
I'm not sure how it'll work, but I'm sure they've solved it to everyone's satisfaction. :)

Yes, @s0uls, We don't care what device you are on, you can connect to other devices. iPad can play with Android, PC and Mac

Good Question, @monkeyrevenge42 , We use whoever started the game as the server and use their DLC.

I guess it's the installed game. So for fresh install from App Store we'll probably need 5+GB free :p

Don't think this'll keep off that many gamers, since the *higher price entry turns off the average casual gamer. So I guess everyone willing to shell out 10 bucks knows more or less what to expect. Let's see how I shovel that much space free.. made the mistake and bought 16GB iPad
