AVP is button mashy, consistent with it's brawler nature. Athough if you enjoyed Chillingo's recent The Gods (or even back to Double Dragon) then AVP is probably more detailed in combat.

It is the standard A to attack (i.e. right slash with Predator), B to block. Both species play differently and you control them at different stages in evolution so their moves advance (i.e. facehugger has limited combat, full alien more advanced).

Here are example combo moves from the very early Predator levels. These moves increase as you play:
A while moving to lunge attack.
Double tap A to "right + left slash."
Triple attacking A to perform a "right + left + right slash".
    A + B to "power kick."
    Tap A + A + B to "scissor split."
    Hold A to "Impale Slash."
I agree; but still worth $4.99 and fun in my opinion.

Yeah, if you want 100% faithful game to the original movies then this isn't it. There are Alien corridor, air vent, levels though. Aliens Vs Predator: Evolution is however more faithful to the comic book series (and aweful Alien Vs Predator movies) which features a lot more open environment combat. Franchise "evolution" being what it is...

The IAP doesn't have me too concerned... yet.

The "button mashing" doesn't particularly bother me. I mean, if it's a button masher, it's a button masher, and it IS AVP, sooo...

My single concern is the brightness. The screens look great, but Sanuku's video (thanks as always for all your work;):D) really has me concerned.

Surely the game isn't that dark during actual play, is it? I don't think I've ever seen anything like it, even in all the darker games I own...

Undead thx for the UC size....now the question is phone or iPad...I'm partial to my ip5 cause of its mobility but this looks like a actual console quality game that my A5 iPad might like...

    Thx again every1

I didn't even know AVP: Evolution was a brawler, but figured it for a mobile, Predator- and Alien-focused single player entry in the AvP shooter series. And was planning to buy it regardless. But a brawler is a more refreshing take on the franchise.

The Gods actually has quite a bit of depth, for a mobile entry to the genre (just the fact that there are both blocks, evasion AND counterattacks ticks off three of boxes on my checklist over desired standard tactical options in melee/unarmed combat). If AVP: Evolution offers more detailed combat, then I'm promoting my cautious interest to actual excitement.

You are right to be concerned. AVP is a darkly shaded game. This is one that you will want to play with your screen brightness turned up. However, there is some impressive subtle lighting effects and the dimness is appropriate to the Alien/Predator theme. It is legible, thanks to the powerful (for iOS) graphics that might not be conveyed accurately in video (workplace filters block Sanuku's You Tube video so I can't compare). Although playing too long might give you a headache because it does contrast with "the brightness of reality."
I don't have an iPad but AVP plays well on my iPhone; smooth with comfortable controls.

This is exactly what I was thinking (OK, hoping:eek:;))...

In all my time here, I've never once even contemplated brightness in a game, but I watched the video and suffice it to say, it was pretty striking.

That said, I'm watching what amounts to a recording of a recording of a... so I was hopeful that the gameplay was at least a bit closer to the screens...;):D

What does it have beyond a basic level pack?

I thought there were levels. It I don't see any in the video, just a straight forward story then?

I can see the screens on this computer; they look great... my iPod Touch 5G AVP beta build shows me something that also looks great but not as good as those screenshots. The actual gameplay graphics are probably somewhere in the middle and might vary by device. Having seen the game I wouldn't hesistat to purchase due to dimness as is; although I would have preferred it to be brighter.
There is a level selection option allowing you to replay levels. Game stats are tracked for the game as a whole so I don't see any individual level high scores. Replay might be questionable save for the arcade thrill of it.

    Looking forward to your impression(s)...

  14. I have both games, RR3 is much better even with all its flaws. Both of these games were kind of let downs for me due to different reasons.

What makes AVP worse than RR3? Just curious as I'm on the edge on this one.

It's pretty good, but it is a bit of a button mash brawler, wrapped in a grand presentation.

Gameplay is decent, but i was looking for more. That doesnt mean it is bad... Just a bit too simple. Move from point A to point B while killing thiings with one button, and the second button occasionally. I was looking for destructible environments and backgrounds, which the game has some, but almost too few.

On the other hand, what the game does offer, the move from start to finish while killing things, it does in a very high quality presentation. The environments are woven mazes and look really sharp, and the combat is very satisfying, despite being a little repetitive. There are finishing moves when you've dealt enough damage, and the camera shifts and zooms make each kill very satisfying.

And the switch from Predators to Aliens gives a non-repetitive feeling, even though the mechanics of their game are almost the same.

The only real negative i have found so far (which i may be wrong), is the game's length. The first 3 missions went by really fast, and one of the missions (second one) doesnt even have combat, but basically is an extension of the tutorial which was the first mission.

Im only on Mission 4, so im not sure how long this game takes to complete with the 19 stages that it has. Im pretty sure i havent even scratched the surface as i havent even used different weapons for the predator yet.

Overall, i definitely like the look and feel of the game despite its simplicity in its game mechanics. Most definitely worth $5 to me (but take note, im being wary about the game length), but to anyone taking a plunge into this, know that it is a brawler type of game, and not a deep, RPG-like kinda game. With that set in mind, im sure you'll have a good time too.

Gameplay is meh, graphics are good though. I agree with Exact Pscience above on most points, except the recommend. Plus, I had really high expectations which may not be fair for this game and RR3. Turns out to be the most disappointing week ever. So sad.

Trust me, the levels do become longer and there are also plenty of side missions.
Just wait until you start upgrading the character. There's plasma guns, net guns, laser traps, face hugger callers, rage mode and lots more.

There is a multiplayer coming , some side missions, more customization options and marines as playable characters in future updates, just read it in interview with game developers.
