It is much more streamlined, focused and accessible as well as more..erm..'modern'. Spiderweb RPGs provide bona fide role playing experiences that go beyond customization in a level up window >.>..there is a real sense of scale as you explore the vast worlds and talk to a huge amount of unique NPCs. There is also enough lore to sustain the worlds and give them shape. There are plenty of ways to carry out and finish the same quest and as for moral decisions? you will be making a lot of them. There is nothing else quite like them on the ios platform...or even on the PC. The writing in the game is top notch but if you are looking for mood/battle music to accompany your exploration and fights you will be rather disappointed. There are only ambient sounds in all Spiderweb games but I don't think it takes anything away from the games. I am a little short on time now..so that will be all from me XD drelbs Well-Known Member Jun 25, 2009 11,200 7 38 #12 drelbs, Oct 10, 2012 Depends on the reasoning behind the choice. If you're new to the genre and don't want to be overwhelmed, Avadon is the best choice. Also it's standalone from the Avernum stories. If you're daring, I'd say Escape from the Pit is the best of the three, but the remake has so much more too it, you might be less impressed with the others. All three are solid turn-based RPGs with plenty of story, exploration and things to kill and equip your party with. If you have a PC/MAC, you can get a complete series of their games - the Geneforge Saga - for as little as a buck on IndieGameStand. They're quite different from Avernum (and overall I liked Avernum better, but as this type of game is hard to come by these days, I take what I can get! ) badmanj Well-Known Member Mar 16, 2009 1,886 24 38 Software developer Reading, England http://www.underground-collective.com #13 badmanj, Oct 10, 2012 Good so far though the image of your saved game appears to be corrupted... Jamie volcanopele Well-Known Member Patreon Bronze Mar 27, 2011 303 0 16 Planetary Geologist AZ, US #14 volcanopele, Oct 11, 2012 Definitely the type of game I love seeing come out for the iPad. I'd love to see even more of these longer-form, RPG games come out. That being said, I really should finish the two games that came out, like Avadon and the Avernum before picking this one up (not saying other people need to, just that I should finish the games I already have before getting a new one...) Gabrien Well-Known Member Nov 24, 2009 5,148 0 36 #15 Gabrien, Oct 11, 2012 I thought Avadon was great, then was disappointed in the last Avernum due to it feeling like little more than a re-skin with a different story. I see this release is heading the very same way. I understand there are folks who are content with more of the same ad infinitum, but I can't understand the drive to be complacent (contradiction in terms?) Neither on the gamers' part, nor the devs'. Look at the great RPG series; Ultima, Wizardry, to name two; both had similar gameplay throughout their runs, but never failed to innovate both technically as well as in terms of gameplay at each step. Not a single release felt like a re-skin or something created with a cookie cutter. I guess if you haven't played any one of Spiderweb's iOS offerings yet, any one of them can be recommended as worthwhile, enjoyable, and fairly unique to the platform. But if you're on your third one and still feel perfectly happy to trudge on without an inkling of dissatisfaction or tedium creeping in, I'd say you need to raise your standards. alyfantis Well-Known Member Nov 28, 2010 90 0 0 Hokkaido, Japan #16 alyfantis, Oct 11, 2012 Does anyone know how this runs on the original iPad? I have Black Fortress and it is terribly laggy. Guess it's time for another iPad. vgsmart Member Oct 12, 2012 6 0 0 #17 vgsmart, Oct 12, 2012 Hi Gabrien, I'm the PR guy for Spiderweb and work closely with Jeff, so I wanted to address your concern directly, since we love hearing from fans (or at least, I love it, Jeff... he's too busy being a grump). Avernum was little more than a re-skin on new technology. That is on purpose The iPad represents a completely new market of people who have never heard of Avernum or Exile or Spiderweb Software, so Avernum: Escape from the Pit was made to introduce them to this world. Avernum 6 HD is following the same plan (Don't worry, we're not going to remake Avernum 5, it's simply too old, but Avernum 6 was close enough we felt it could help attract new users). So while Avadon was created primarily to bring our fans a new world and a experience, Avernum was re-made to bring new fans an OLD experience. Also, our existing fans love it to death so... they didn't seem too disappointed on the whole. I wanted to make that stance clear for everyone- We've been super excited this year and last year to bring our games to an entirely new group of players and have been overwhelmed by how much love its gotten. On the plus side Gabrien, you and everyone who feels as you do, can expect Avadon 2 next Finally, a big thank you for all the kind words from everyone above! Now to go poke Eli until he reviews Avernum 6 HD. Bwahahaha! -Joe L. I'm afraid I don't have one to test it on personally... :-/ Yerac8 Member Mar 3, 2012 9 0 0 #19 Yerac8, Oct 14, 2012 I'm new to these games. I had not played any sort of game for years so found Avadon was perfect to get me back into it. I think I would have been a bit overwhelmed if I had jumped in with Avernum escape from the pit. I actually really enjoyed Avadon for the fact that you create one character of your own but had to work with the other characters. It was fun because my dislike of some of my party effected the outcome of the game. Anyway I am loving Avernum 6 so far but think the level difficulties must have been changed a bit as normal is a bit too easy. It is good that you can change difficulty level easily. I am so glad these sorts of games are being released for iPad. I would not get to play them otherwise! currymutton Well-Known Member Oct 16, 2008 4,430 1 0 #20 currymutton, Oct 14, 2012 AFAICT, Avadon runs very well on iPad1 but just some time, it went sluggish or low on memory. but I have yet to experience any kick back to home screen.
