So for someone who bought the original Avernum, enjoyed it but moved on prematurely, is this a significant advancement in any way or just another adventure with the same game engine? Would I be as well to just replay and finish the first, or is this a better game?
According to Spiderweb Software Avernum 2 has been cancelled for ipad. Jeff Vogel said the 8.3 update broke the system he had used for his Avernum/Avadon game engine. There is more information on the Spiderweb forums.
Not only that, 8.3 might break all their games? He said it was incompatible with their engine. Also no more Dev for iPad http://spiderwebforums.ipbhost.com/index.php?/topic/21512-why-we-are-no-longer-developing-for-the-ipad/
That's really sad news, especially that he will stop developing for iOS completely. I immensely enjoyed his games, and was always happy to see a new one. I really hope he comes back, even if it means waiting a few years for Avadon 3 or whatever (I just can't get myself to play on a computer anymore, not even for your games, Jeff ). Just in case you stop by here and read this: Extremely generous of you to offer a refund, but please keep my money. I know it's just a gesture, but you brought me some great games. So it's the least I can do.
+1 Worst news of the day. I regret not picking it up immediately, especially since I never updated my iPad to iOS 8, and I don't plan to. I wonder if he would consider putting the game live again with the disclaimer that it's not compatible with iOS 8? :/ Note to self: download all of his games to iTunes on my laptop and make a backup in case they end up pulled sooner or later...
I just opened up and tried all of their games. I have 8.3, and they all seemed okay in a limited try.
Very very sad news. I really hope it was an oversight of apple to make the platform spiderweb uses unworkable in the latest update. Really hope they recognise this and will restore the functionality in the next update. For the least so that spiderweb not be so discouraged, because this could possibly be effecting other devs with games in development. Purely speculation on this and I have no development knowledge , but I really hope apple aren't dissecting the dev community by "changing the rules of the game" every so often. If they inadvertently are, then I hope they reach an iOS which just doesn't need that kind of change very soon. Doubt it though, as everyone's gotta be seen to be busy on such things. Always in search of the holy grail of software platforms, when really, if it just works, then that simply is the best outcome. Hope to see these devs back soon. Reading that link however, sounds like mobile gaming in terms of potential profits is getting tight. I'm sure it's just for now though, everything happens in waves. The current games that are holding their share in the market will become old news in 6 months or so, and so the cycle continues.
I did the same, with the same results. They do seem fine. And Avernum 2 IS playable on my iPad Air 2 (8.3). The buttons will stop working, but I rotate my iPad 180 degrees (as suggested by eugenemcardle earlier in this thread) and they work fine again. Until they stop working again, and I rotate 180 once more. And so on. It's somewhat of a pain, but it's certainly doable. And I'll keep doing it, and keep playing the game. Hopefully that will work until I finish the game.
I find this quite odd. 8.3 was in beta for quite a while, why announce they would drop now? And seriously, I never saw an update break an app this way. It is simply odd.
installed the older Avernum on my IOS 8.3 and it's working fine for me? I don't see the glitches that this one has...
Yeah, a couple of us have tried that and the older games do indeed seem to working just fine. Thank goodness!
Sorry buddy, pipe dream. Apple doesnt care who else they effect, and unless the 'damage' they cause is very widespread, it will be up to the game devs to adapt, not apple.
I haven't read the whole thread but if the issue is IOS 8.3 related, I know that somewhere around IOS 8, apple changed the path of where an app's data and documents are located. I think this was to facilitate iCloud or something. It's affected a lot of Unity 3D game devs like me but luckily Unity 3D has a pretty solid workaround for it.
