      is there anyway to make my iPod automatically detect new email?

      Get yahoo or mobile me. They push emails through. Others fetch it at set intervals.

      Settings -> Fetch New Data -> Every 15 minutes.

      This is as good as it gets without getting another program.

      Battery hog, though.

      Yeah yahoo doesn't always push the emails. Its very finicky.
