I've played some games with the new controls and they are much better. The arcade Tempest is a LOT better.
This looks like a massive update from whai I've seen so far. We're not talking just adding a sensitivity slider folks, we're talking entire new control schemes for many of the games. I am having SO much fun playing Tempest now. Sliding my finger in a circle makes so much sense with Tempest. Middle Command has new touch controls, with optional offset so you can see the crosshair- very nice indeed. EDIT: Played a bit more and the arcade games play mucho better. I could play Tempest and Warlords all night. Several of the console games are still messed up. The Combat games, for example - the computer player just mimics your movements. Hopefully those games will be fixed soon.
I believe that they've put out all of the 2600 games that they can. Almost all of the remaining unissued titles released by Atari have licensing issues of one form or another. There's a couple of other titles that they could slip out. One is Indy 500, which has a couple of issues; the rights to the name could be circumvented by putting out the Sears version instead, and the game was supplied with some unique controllers that will be difficult to emulate. The other 'game' was Basic Programming, which most likely conflicts with current App Store policies.
Did anyone else have trouble with previously purchased games after the update? I couldn't reauthorize them all at once, just one at a time, so I deleted and reinstalled to fix it. To the people wishing we could have "I, Robot" and the Activision VCS collection on this pack, I wholeheartedly agree. I would also love to see the Star Wars games here. Vector graphics on iPad and Retina displays are so beautiful and I can't get enough.
Warlords is greatly improved with the new available control scheme and is now fun! I'm really happy about that. But now they need to add same-device 4-player multiplayer. Yes, same here. I didn't think about deleting and reinstalling. I think I'll do that. It's too painful to download them all individually.
I had the same problem. The update seems to have added a little bit of downloadable content to every game, presumably the graphics used by control method selection screen.
I would have bought the full pack at launch if it supported online leaderboards of some sort. I realize purists might think that's blasphemy, but hey, these are mostly arcade games after all. I like to have high scores to shoot for.
Deleting the app, re-installing and restoring in-app purchases is the way to go... at least until the release a fix for the problem, and at least for those who bought the full set of games. I agree that this would be a better game with online leaderboards via GC, but I think that's probably waiting for Apple to update GC to support more leaderboards. A lot more - why the limited it so severely I don't know. As it stand they couldn't use GC for online leaderboards. EDIT: actually I spoke too soon. My restore-all timed out on both my iPhone and iPad. Annoying. However, once you find a game that it hasn't downloaded yet (it's impossible to tell without just trying to launch the game), it will offer to download all again and continue from where it left off. So still annoying, but better then downloading each individually. Or just tap every minute or so to keep your device awake.
Warlords (arcade, probably 2600 too but I haven't tried it there yet) is *so* much better now with the new touch on screen controls (not a slider - move your finger however you want - it feels very natural), especially on the iPad, but man do I wish it supported multiplayer on one device. At least in Warlords. Seems like a no-brainer for that game. Oh well. Maybe in a future update?
I would gladly settle for OpenFeint or proprietary leaderboards, personally. Both would be much much better than nothing, that's for sure.
I must admit i did them all one at a time last night. The app now is far far better and yeah i'm sure theres a lot of difficult licensing to do to get some of the more 'famous' games for the VCS available. But its so frustrating, i want to be 'legal' and buy many old retro games but i cant so i have to go down the 'illegal' route and find torrents/rom sites. Take the Gameboy Mono, would LOVE to play many of those old games on my ipod but thats never going to happen so have to just stick with the emulator on my PC. As for leaderboards i still dont get why people rave about these. In the arcades back in the day they were pretty good but now i think theyre a waste, i'm never going to beat some 14 year old kid who plays a game non stop every weekend/evening. Just like home computers in the 80's or consoles in the 90's, i have my high score and it disappears the second i turn the machine off. Not bothered by high scores for my ipod games at all.
And what about the Atari Lynx? I'd LOVE to be able to play those games on the iPhone. (That's actually the only reason why I still fire up my PSP every now and then ;-)
That's what friends are for. Friend leaderboards. I can't compete with that 14 year old, but I can compete with my Mom. Seriously, though, that's what those are for. So you can compare with friends and not the world.
No worries, 14-year-olds won't play this. No reason to be scared of the 30+ crowd, is there? As for me, I do like Game Center and Openfeint just to compete with my friends.
Apologies, didnt mean to slate anyone who does like leaderboards. I've got a few friends who love iOS gaming but i dont know, just not bothered by leaderboards personally (but i know manyyy people are). The comment about the Atari Lynx, would love things like this to happen like this Atari app, some main emulator and then lots of games to get for it. Just seems to be a whole huge mess of copyright/legal issues to get the rom files for games. Again so many classic games out there gathering dust, even a simple 'Sega' re-badge to get it working on iOS would be great for many old classics
Just a quick guide. Top 5 Packs to buy if you are cheap: 1. Major Havoc Pack - I bought just for Yar's Revenge. But Major Havoc and Secret Quest are awesome games as well. 2. Adventure Pack - You get one of the Classics, Adventure, as well as Haunbted House and Save Mary, both of which are very good. 3. Warlords Pack - 2 Great versions of Warlords, as well as the best 2600 game in m opinion, Combat. 4. Battlezone Pack - Another great from the arcade, with 3 good solid titles. 5. Realsports Football Pack - Worth is for Pong Sports. 3 good Sports Titles, this is a great pack. There ya have it. For 5 bucks, you get 20 classic Atari games that will keep you entertained for hours. P.S. Don't believe the haters of this app. It rules!!!
