I'm not surprised at all considering this newer bait and switch tactic being used. Wait until the initial rush is over and than get every one else in on it that didn't wanna fork over $.99. This is why they have IAP in the game and some people call it grindy. It's a scary state the iOS market is in..
Why even give it a price at all? I knew right from the beginning that this would go free fairly soon after launch. Every other Asphalt game has, so it just felt odd to have even as small of a price as it did. When you can almost bank on a game going free, there are bigger issues at hand.
Oh good, I was worried for a bit there that the new price tag would become permanent, and consequently affect the ingame economy.
With this game, while I imagine the bulk of the profits come from IAP, there are some people who will play the game and never get an IAP since they aren't entirely necessary. So I'm sure Gameloft is just as happy to grab a buck from them upfront. With the exception of this, has anyone noticed that both Gameloft and EA seem to be running much fewer $.99 sales? Aside from the occasional ones, it used to be almost a regular thing for the two to have sales on holidays. And this year there was nothing for either the 4th of July or Labor Day. So it seems like their sticking to the premium prices on their premium games more. It may be no longer expected that their games will be $.99 so soon.
It's not staying free though. It'll return to $0.99 after Monday. We just wanted to do a cool free promotion for people who can't find the 99 cents in their couch cushions!
Actually, you might want to look up the app history of all the Asphalt's that appeared on iOS because that statement couldn't be more wrong. They may have had free sales on each of them but none was quite so soon and none was permanent.
