You're probably right but I liked the overview maps in A7. Okay, those nine tracks aren't too much to remember, maybe a bit confusing only at the beginning I thought that too before. But then I realized that I played A7 always with full powered and upgraded cars and got used to that for months. When you upgrade the cars in A8 (esp. handling) the drifting/not drifting situation/switch becomes a lot better and easier. It's balanced pretty good in A8. Test with iPhone 4 and iPhone 5: Passed.
Much as I traditionally hate tilt, it's a better option here than the touch controls. Allows for very good control while drifting.
It is a bit good, isn't it? Still a shameless clone of every other arcade racer going, but my God, it copies them really, really well. There's something so awesome about the way Gameloft Barcelona have just gone completely for broke - "We're gonna have NITRO ON EVERYTHING and AWESOME RAMPS and HUNDRED-FOOT JUMPS and STUNTS and EVERY COOL CAR ON EARTH and ALL THE CHOONZ" (pant, pant, pant) It's like Burnout with the subtlety stripped away, and I'm really enjoying it. If nitroing through the pack less than five seconds off the starting line and sending cars flying like seaspray to the sound of thundering brostep is wrong then, well, you know how the rest of it goes. I don't know how much fun it'll continue to be over the long term but for a dollar this one is a complete no-brainer. Runs startlingly well on a poor widdle iTouch 5G, too. I can see certain textures are very low-res and the lighting model is nothing like as advanced as an iPad 4 and so on, but it's still a gorgeous game. Hit a five-car pileup and you won't be comparing particle effects while you're playing, put it that way.
Right. I'm able to drift the entire track continuously until I get to some ramp. You just gotta get the feel for it. I highly DON'T recommend touch controls for drifting. You see that? I'm always right.
The early release winners got their codes already. One on here and another on IGN Asia. The others will get them tomorrow. I think there's 20 left to be given out tomorrow.
Yeah, this game plays by far the best on ipad 4, so much so that this may well be the game that causes me to buy an ipad 5. While the ipad 3 and ipad mini versions play pretty great, the ipad 4 version to me, feels like a console game, really makes me look forward to an ipad 5 or 6, after Gameloft optimizes this for those future ipads, heck, an ipad will be very close to my dream of being a great device for console like games. These things are what makes Asphalt 8 great, the fun factor. I won a prerelease code here on TA, I got it quick via pms here. If you won one, ask Gameloft Ryan, I'm sure he can check on the status for you. I love tilt steering on asphault games. Sometimes playing with HDMI (extra cord and weight), I play with touch controls, but can't see how one gets high scores this way. Tilt is best, but touch is nice too at times, like for HDMI TV. While some like the ease of drift in A7 over A8, I like A8 drift better. It is more difficult to enter drift, but to be honest, I never really cared to be drifting all the time. First it is unrealistic, and second, I like how in A8, where you have to master this technique. It is very hard to drift with touch controls, but it is pretty awesome on tilt. I personally prefer how this game is more focused on racing and jumping, rather than drifting like some of of the previous games stressed more. And the tilt controls are awesome, again with the higher near console like performance of the ipad 4 version, and with the rumoured lighter weight of the ipad 5 (cause face it, playing tilt on ipad 3/4s is heavy), really makes me think an ipad 5 would be awesome for this game. Plus would be curious too to see if the added horsepower would make a difference on an ipad 5. First game really that makes me want an ipad 5.
If you guys haven't yet, please send me a PM so I can check and see if it's been sent out. Not sure why my request has taken so long but PLEASE LET ME KNOW!
Wow, I had no idea how good it was on the mini, this is just fantastic!! I have had no lag (even in MP) and I'm enjoying it so much! It looks awesome as well, and when Spoiler you see the rocket take off in one of the maps (just a map spoiler) it is just awesome. Gameloft made an amazing game here. Everything from the maps to the look to stunts, everything is great. Only thing missing is private lobbies. Also, how are flat spins (or whatever they are) preformed?
Also for anyone who is on the fence about whether or not to pick this game up I'll be doing a live stream of Asphalt 8 gameplay around 11AM PDT (2PM EST) on TwitchTV. I'll be going over the full list of cars, tracks, demoing a car from each class in a race, each mode, etc. so it'll probably run close to an hour or a little over. The link for the show is: www.twitch.tv/gameloft Feel free to stop by and say hey to me in chat and hang out for a bit! Hope to see you there
I always loved the tilt steering in Asphalt and NFS series. Some of the few titles where i prefer tilt over touch.
This is incorrect. Generally there is a shorter route, but depending on the situation the longer route is often faster. There's a lot of little strategies for using nitro. Don't just mash the right side of the screen as soon as you get it. For instance, if you collect the little nitro canisters whilst using the nitro you had already, that's some long ass nitro. Say there's two racers, side by side going the same speed.... The long way, with nitro, could end up being faster if you have nitro (even if the other guy has it too) to begin with or especially if neither of the racers has any upon entering the shortcuts. If you don't have nitro, you might want to go for the long way. Or, if you have nitro, you might want to take the short way Or, if you have nitro, you might still want to take the long way, resulting in even more nitro. Or you might wanna take the short way, drifting the whole time getting lots of nitro. It all depends on the particular track, your position, how fast you're going, how fast you can go, your cars' nitro ability, and your opponents position/speed/car as well.
I generally prefer tilt in driving games when using an iPad, as the device takes the role of a pseudo-steering wheel and just feels more satisfying and immersive to me than tapping left and right arrows. Tilting an iPod Touch on the other hand just doesn't have the same impact, so I'm more likely to use virtual controls in such a case (not that I really use mine these days). 71 achievements that cover the expected range, including: Total number of cars owned. All cars owned in a particular class. Total knockdowns. Total drift distance. Total air time. Total stars earned. Seasons beaten. Credits earned. Race medals earned. Total cars fully upgraded. Win specific events. Total number of multiplayer matches. Most of the above are broken into multiple individual milestone achievements.
