I'm curious then, if not for bragging rights, what is the big draw to MP for you specifically?

I didn't make that claim, so I can't say if it's something the game team was putting into place or not. I'm happy to check or maybe Fabien has an idea of if this is actually happening. Based on the consistency of the leaderboards, I'd say no.

Even though this wasn't directed at me, I'll say that MP's biggest draw for me is being able to race against actual humans as opposed to the somewhat lacking AI cars in tournaments.

However, I would like it if I was pitted against players of similar rank (I'm in the mid-to-high 1400s right now), and who had identical cars (when I race in D-class, I use my Dodge Dart 90% of the time). Too much of the time, I end up facing players who are 200-300 points below me, but whose cars are ranked as much as 45 points higher. Many of the tournaments focus on the showcasing of one specific car; it would be great if MP were tweaked to allow for that same specificity.

Is it just a matter of there not being enough decent players using the Dodge Dart in MP? I've also used the popular Survolt, but then I often end up racing against users with 1600-1700 points, who are always positioned ahead of me at the starting line. Not much equilibrium there either.

Part of the art, if you will, of A8 is knowing what car to run and with what upgrades. If you get beat by a car upgraded to a certain rank, you get that exact car. Eventually you find that nothing can beat a maxed Mini-Cooper, nothing can touch the Lykan and a maxed Survolt will always win — except for the odd Audi at 1339.

Maybe she's grown tired of running the same race over and over again, shaving off milliseconds? She wouldn't be the first person to fall out of love with tournaments.

    Related:

Pardon my turning philosophical, but what makes people compete in sports? Or chess, or any other kind of contest? I don't think it's just about bragging rights, I think we enjoy the challenge itself. We like how we play against and with people at the same time — take this discussion as an example: We're all competitors, but we seem to enjoy each other's company.

Multiplayer is (or at least was) the most fun kind of competition in Asphalt. Just like in tournaments, you get to race against fellow human beings, but there are a couple of key differences:

    - You actually interact with the competition.
    - You can choose your own car, rather than being forced into the tournament car du jour.
    - Each race is different. Tournaments with their endless repetitions are incredibly dull in comparison.

Needless to say, that's my subjective take. If you prefer tournaments, good for you. :) (And if you're Habakuk, this is your cue to rave about local multiplayer.)

    --

EDIT: I forgot to reply to this...

The game itself makes that claim. Go to "Options" > "Info" > "What's new?", then navigate to the last item: "Inactive players will be removed from the leaderboard after 2 weeks. […] Make sure to play the World Series often to show off your skills to everyone!"

This doesn't explicitly define what you guys mean when you say "inactive", but the last sentence certainly suggests that it's directly related to multiplayer. Besides, it wouldn't make sense for single player (or tournament) activity to influence your multiplayer status, would it?

They really should limit the amount of runs allowed in some of these tournament (not necessarily the daily ones specific to a country, but the significant, multi-day worldwide tournaments that award 1 million credits to the winner). I get the sense that there are people out there who've run that Alps course a hundred times by now in an attempt to take off .002 from their time. While iPad gaming certainly can't be compared to real-life sports, I think it would be more exciting if we only got 3 tries each on the course. Let the truly most skillful players reap the big rewards (and I'm not saying I'm one of them; I have yet to crack the top 100 in any worldwide tourney).

(And I'm still suspicious about MRW's ranking. Exactly how has her points total remained the same after 5 months? I don't even think inactive players should be removed from the leaderboard, but they should be penalized after a certain time.)

Or, instead of penalizing inactive players, Gameloft could reward daily MP players, like they do with the credits bonus. Say, a graduated bonus of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 points per consecutive days that we complete an MP race.

Like Running Bird said, its about the challenge/competition. Bragging rights are cool to show off but the competition is what drives people (the more skilled players) to play multiplayer

Yeah, one's daily dedication to MP mode should definitely be rewarded. I don't see why MRW's stagnant 2,343 points should be the summit of MP scoring. The number could easily be 10,000, or even more than that.

As an aside: I spent about half an hour last night trying to beat your time in the Lykkan Alps Reverse Canadian tournament. But I kept failing to shed that elusive tenth of a second to do so. :( Weird thing is, in my fastest run, I actually missed the first orange bottle on the bridge.

Thats not a good idea because of how random things are. Sometimes cars line up perfect for you to knock them out or they go haywire and ruin your run.
That would be a really bad idea. All i would have to do is play one match a day everyday once i reach the max bonus and i get atleast 5 points? At my level of play, that is like a cheat code.

Hence why you would get 3-5 runs instead of only one. Honestly, those cars shouldn't even be there. A time trial to determine the fastest racers shouldn't partially depend on knocking down erratic AI players who are no longer a factor in the race after the first 5 seconds. It should depend on nitro management, steering precision, avoiding contact with walls, knowing when to use ramps, etc.

Time trial is about having the best possible time. How does 3-5 reps qualify as the best time they can possibly get? Time Trial has never worked that way in any major racing game. Knockouts are a very important part of this game and knocking cars out is as big a part of the game as nitro management, not hitting walls, etc. And you are acting as if racing in this game doesnt already depend on the things you named. Knock outs are just added to that list.

I agree with Dark_Zero, knockouts are a rather important part of this game. While a more realistic game like Real Racing 3 offers Time Trials, this game is in a different category. Time Trials have would not work as well in a game that's has non- realistic graphics (Nitro, drifting w/o losing speed), spins, rolls, and most of all knockouts).

Make no mistake, I don't like some aspects of the game: tournaments, how only the top three get huge rewards while the rest of the people get almost nothing, neither do I like being paired up with maxed Lykan's and Agera R's with both tuning kit and Nitro starter in a 1513 Sesto Elemento w/o either NO2 or tuning.
However, I really appreciate the way the game is now. Yes I would change some things but not drastically. If you don't appreciate this game, find a BETTER one!

I have an idea for the ultra high paying/competitive tourney's for the lower ranked/UNDER BUDGETED/newer racer....

I think that maybe they still keep things like they are, but you add a totally random 1 million payout for placings outside the top 100....that gives incentive to race no matter what you level is and may be get a hand in advancing in game a bit faster... you could even split it to to random folks 500k each or something like that :)

Not just the boosters, but the car's ranking... Are those final results?

The Infected Cup is pretty neat. It's nice to take it slowly at the start for a change. I actually braked a few times to slow down my F-150 and guarantee I'd be the first to get infected.

Yeah...digging the new Infected tourney. Even though it's nitro management, it's kind of cool for a change of pace.

Most of the tournaments arent like this. In my entire time of playing this game, that has only happened recently, which was about 2-3 tournaments.

In multiplayer, stick to the Survolt (first B class car) maxed out.
Splitting money in this game would be an amazing idea. People in this thread would love me lol.
We're just your typical racers :) Ofcourse you can add me. My ID on gamecenter is: vDarkZero

I'm not on iOS.... Could I add you on facebook?

Also, how should I do the infected event-I'm not good at this. Should I start off infected or get infected on in the last 20-30 seconds? And should I use the Tesla which has slower acceleration but higher speed or the R8 with faster acceleration but lower top speed?
I've got almost 800,000 saved up so spending money to max a car is not problem...
