Cam check backwards and you will see I am the first advocating luck here plays a role but not a fundamental one. This game needs skills, but nit strategic ones. This game has little strategy but plenty of tactics. A strategy is when you can somewhat foresee the opponent moves and make plans, traps, etc think checkers and chess. Tactics is the same but it has a much shorter time span. I prefer games where you can do both (just like when at war) and I like less the ones that privilege pure tactics. This said, I love this game ... Because it's being full of tactics makes it fast that is nice Ad I agree async games is a good thing (I love it on some games) they should just add also options for time limited games (with mutual exception option as well). This would be fine and solve issue when people are wrongly matched.
I'll manage. I don't hate the game when played asynch, just prefer it live. A problem I have with asynch, and I'm sure this is just me, is a tendency to burn out quickly. I end up with too many games going at once. Then if I don't have a lot of games going at once, I end up with not playing because there are no turns to take. Lose-Lose. Here, at least, there seem to be a lot of people that do want to play live and the game is also fun 2 player (unlike, for me, anyway, Carcassonne), so I can get my fill that way, then fit in some asynch turns here and there. I also don't get the notifications in this game on my iPhone, although I do get them fine on my iPad. I do have notifications turned on on both. Hopefully they can fix this problem soon.
My kid are 8 and 10. They are still pretty taxing at times, but, yeah, not like a new born or a 2 year old.
Well, you can count up your own cards, but yeah, just realized you can't count up opponents' (I noticed before you could see some opponents' cards, but I just realized it's only the discarded/played ones you can see). Yeah, as I said, "sometimes" I wish I could use strategy - I kinda go back and forth on that thought. Either way, I still really enjoy the game - play it every day.
As Gabrien said, what you're describing isn't luck - that's just variation in the game and people's decisions. Luck is an (mostly) uncontrollable event - something that "just happens", whether due to fate/chance (this of course is open to opinion) or physics/math (the roll of a die, the shuffling of a deck of cards). Every move in those games I listed is based on human choice - there is no chance or physics involved.
I think it's kind of weird that you can look at their discard pile, but not their full deck. It seems kind of arbitrary. You've also got the play history, so you can effectively see everything in their deck, but you'll have to make an effort. It seems like they either should allow you to look at the full deck, or not allow you to look at any of it (except the last turn, as of course you can miss what happened).
True, but I think the idea is that you're supposed to have already been able to see all of those cards that were played. So allowing you to review every turn isn't really providing anything new. But being able to see what they have in their hand or unused pile would allow you to plan on what to choose/banish. Sure, you could try to remember every single card they have, but that's like counting cards in blackjack or poker - most people can't keep track of it all, especially later in the game when there are more cards to keep track of.
I suppose it makes sense, given the asynch play option. Part of the problem with playing 10 games at once, and very intermittently, is it's pretty much impossible to keep track of. So you need to be able to review. Also, yes, you are right about chess, et. al. I'd rather play this game, though. More fun. And the better players (which I'm not a member of yet, but getting better) win more often. It's not all luck. It's a nice mix at a nice play length.
A lot of that is wasted effort, anyway. There's not that many different types of cards in the game; many times, it will be pretty apparent what general direction an opponent is headed. Also, there's a universal truth for all games: if you spend too much time worrying about what the other guy can do, you're not thinking enough about what you can do. Shorter version: you've got enough to think about just playing your own hand.
I have a 2 week-old, beat that! She loves to play guerrilla on her feeding and sleeping times. I still manage to play 6+ games at the same time, thanks to async multiplay. @crunc, can I have the pleasure to invite you to a game?
Two weeknold is better that waiting for delivery likemin my case .... I hope for today. I think every husband knows what I am talking about Btw the first is easy the second, we need to keep the first busy!
My kids like this game too, though they don't really get the strategy yet, they like playing it anyway. Which makes me really wish this game had local bluetooth/wifi play. We have an iPad and 2 iPhones. I could set up another GC account (my wife's iPhone already has a separate one) and then we could play 3 players that way, but that's kind of ridiculous. If it allowed local bluetooth (or wifi) play it would be simple and not require use of the internet. currymutton - I don't think I got a friend request from you. Either that or you've never signed in online in Ascension. In any case I've just sent you a friend request. Camzy - I also just sent you a friend request. Actually, first I sent it to Camzee. Oops. Then I sent another to Camzeee.
