Sorry to everyone who I was playing with completely forgot about the game, my notifications didn't show and that's usually what remind me.
Anyone feel like this game is more luck than skill? I mean there's obviously some tactics involved but mostly it's luck of the draw.
I think a lot of the tactics involve dealing with the luck of the draw - if you go into this game expecting to play your favorite way, you're hosed unless you're lucky - most of the time the cards you want/need will not show (or be purchased by your opponent(s.) It also depends on what card set(s) you are playing with. Try starting up games with different (and fewer!) card sets...
I still think luck is too much of a factor as opposed to strategy. Or maybe I'm just bad at the game, my online record is an abysmal 29-51.
You have to understand some light statistics and how the cards flow in order to reign in the chaotic elements of luck, imho. Once you understand how the cards move in and out of your hand, you can plan a bit more. I personally enjoy the randomness of the game. Three players, all sets and expansions is my favorite offline game. ANYTHING can happen.
Two things. First, are you playing with just the base game, or do you have expansions? I think the base game IS too luck based and isn't balanced very well. The expansions are much better. Second, the strategy comes in playing the cards from your hand in relation to what's in the middle. This mainly comes later in the game. If you get the right cards, you can get some serious chains going. Actually the fact that you don't have a balance of wins losses indicates you just haven't learned the intricacies game yet rather than it being a matter of luck. If it was all luck, you should have a pretty even split. A couple pointers: try to get rid of your starting cards as soon as possible; Mechana cards work well together as do Lifebound (generally); Void is good for killing monsters and getting rid of cards, and enlightened is good for advancing through your deck more quickly; if you have a high number of runes or power but no high cards on which to use them, if there are any really cheap cards, buy one or more of those first to see if a better card appears; unless the center row has at least four or more monsters at the beginning, buy mainly rune giving cards.
Thanks for the advice. I guess I was just super pissed because I got destroyed in a game today in the worst possible way. This guy defeated Herald of Doom (8 power) and had exactly 7 energy cards which meant he cleaned out the entire center row as well. I was thinking, what could I have done to prevent that?!
Sometimes nothing. Sometimes banishing cards in the center row is a good way to go if you can't seem to buy/defeat them (not sure Herald is banishable though). So you're obviously playing Rise of Vigil. Make sure to get energy any time you can. It's needed for most of the cards in the expansion, so it's very key. And obviously it doesn't hurt your deck since each one allows you to draw, making it essentially a free card with no footprint.
I think the game makes a lot more sense after reading your explanations. I'll put those tips into practice, thanks.
Per rule book "If multiple players have the same number of Honor Points, the last player to start his first turn wins (i.e., the starting player loses all ties, the second player loses to the third and fourth, etc.)." Mainly because there is a slight advantage of going first.
Np, glad to help. Ascension is one of my favorite games - been playing it every day since it came out on iOS and bought many of the physical versions as well, so getting more people into it is always a good thing.
Ah I see, thanks for the heads up. I'm enjoying it so much more now that I understand the game a little better, at least I know why I lose. Hit me up for a game? My ign is transcats.
Invite sent. I'm Delerium. I included all promos - if you don't have them all and don't want to get them, just send me an invite back with whatever expansions you want.
Well I'd say you're seriously making up for your poor luck now. You've been so lucky the last few games with me.
Haha I've definitely been very lucky. Especially in the first game, in the beginning rounds I used Aether Channeler (obtain any random hero in any expansion) to get Aaron, the Godslayer (7 runes). That was pure luck obviously.
Thanks for the game invites guys! Bought all four promo packs just for you guys lol guess it was time I took the plunge anyway.
A couple questions for somebody who has never played: 1. How hard is it for a complete newbie to learn the game? Is it a steep learning curve? 2. How expensive does this game get if you really get into it?
