Even if I can't quite make myself prefer the new look and feel, at least not from the video, having the makers of the physical product also hold the reins of the iOS version will probably and hopefully have quite a few advantages, such as direct access to new expansions.

A digital trading card/board game crossover from Mojang, the Minecraft dudes. It eschews the five card position layout popularized by games like Shadow Era, Solforge and Order & Chaos, in favour of a detailed board and tabletop wargaming mechanics where positioning and movement are a major element and key to success, with several different attack and defense points instead of the traditional hero/summoner target.

It also has very nice presentation, card art and visual style, perky music, and relies on nicely implemented direct player to player trading instead of auction house mechanics (an idea which brings several advantages and and drawbacks).

While the card pool is still low, beta and all that, I'd predict that Scrolls has the mechanical potential to become one of the more sophisticated TCGs available. And there has been subtle hints that it might sneak across the platform divide to iOS at some point...

(Though truth to say, had the iOS TCG Assassin's Creed: Recollection received regular updates and care from Ubisoft, and had the community not been been reduced to a few grim survivors, I'd probably not have looked anywhere else for the only realtime TCG fix I need. (As opposed to an async TCG, something that I am still waiting for. Durned Cabals for not sticking to their promises.) AC:R is perhaps the most intricate and complex digital card game I have ever come across, and could probably stand proud next to classics of complexity such as Legend of the Five Rings and The Eternal Struggle.

It's a bit sad that the PC port of Recollection never materialized. It might have reinvigorated the community.)

Heh, if you don't mind losing a few games, feel free to add me (delirium). :)

As a side note, I've been playing delirium lately - pretty funny. No idea who it is, but I'm thinking he invited me because of the nameā€¦

Oh, and Ironcub, are you still hosting the tournaments on stoneblade's site? I've been way too busy the past couple months to participate, but I should have a bit more free time now.

Money will be well spent, trust me. Also, try the new packs offline first to understand what they are all about. Some combinations are very entertaining.

    bought em all now :)

indeed, i have to do some offline gaming before i can do online it seems, some new aspects i have yet to get a grasp on.

one basic thing i still dont get it is the benefit of banishing or discarding your own cards?
i get it when there is a clear written benefit like draw two new cards.

Because you can banish the cards you start with that are worth no victory points so that your drawing the better cards more often, that's the basic idea anyway.

Nice. Yeah, the beginning set isn't really balanced IMO - mechana is too strong, and there's not enough strategy - more luck. Each of the expansions though made the game much better, so you made a good choice. :)

On a side note, I just got my apprentice edition of the physical game, so I can now easily tote it around and play anywhere. :) The deck is interesting - it's actually a mashup of cards from all of the sets (I think), including even some promo cards. So it's definitely unique - I had thought it was mostly just going to be a version of the original with new art and a few extra cards thrown in.

(Since I never finish my Loser Guide) Here are some tips I learn from blogs and my shiny losing rate:

    1. Flow: it is mostly about how you gain more powerful cards as you go and how fast you make themselves useful. All players start with 10 less-than-useful-during-mid-game cards so you either get rid of them (banished) or make them discarded to make room for more powerful, honour-counting cards to come into play. So some cards are very powerful in this sense (namely the Black Hole) in this sense.

    2. Central Line control: you get 3 runes in hand to "buy" stuff and there seems to be a very nice card on the Central Line (especially the irresitable mechana constructs!), you can "buy" a Mystic (or HI if you are a "power" player), or you can get this little nice card from the Central before the other player(s) get it. The thing is you can always get the card from the Central and turns out the next card (more likely than not) is The One which flops your game which is grabbed by your opponent and normally you-do-not-realise-this-mistake-until-too-late. The things of when to take and which to take from the Central Line and sometime, even how to get rid of Central Line are some of the backbones making up of your game strategy.

    3. And most important of all: it is just a game, enjoy and don't mind losing too much (the AI is really damn good). My ceiling is 30 points difference or there will always be a rematch.

For my (shiny) record, current the 2P win-loss ration is 1166-1539. I have a suspectable 37 forfeits which I never recall having so many so I consider this as a bug.

    hi everybody,
considering that this app will be pulled next July, does it make any sense to invest any money into this now? Will IAP be transferred to the new Ascension Online?
Have the vanilla version, enjoy it quite a lot against the CPU... though on its hardest level i rarely win :p but really fun

First off, no, none of your purchases will transfer over. Ascension Online is developed by a different company, not PlayDek. They are two completely separate games.

If you're enjoying what you've got so far, I recommend the Storm of Souls expansion. Of the expansions available, that's the one that introduced the most compelling functions in my opinion.

You'll still be able to play after it gets pulled, but only single player and same-device multiplayer matches. To me, that's still a good reason to keep it and get the available expansions. If online matches are the only reason you play, hold off for the new app.

As much as I think PlayDek deserves the money, you're probably safe waiting for a sale. I think when I bought the app, they had all IAPs on sale for a dollar each. The current prices are still a bargain considering how fun they are, let alone how much their physical counterparts cost.
