My understanding is that the "Top in app purchases" bar only appears after sufficient purchases have been made (makes sense.) Initially at release there is currently no way to tell if a game has any IAPs.

That does make sense. Additionally, it's at first release when it's most important for that information to be disclosed, IMO.

I've never seen the films and I'm enjoying this game a lot. The quips from Ash are extremely annoying, but the gameplay is really fun and the graphics are charming.

Number 11 on the paid charts and climbing. Definitely deserves the success.

I beat it without IAPs and never felt the need for them. I grinded some levels once or twice but that was because I wanted to get a upgrade early and wanted to feel overpowered. Never needed it though. Anyway, if you think the developer is trying to screw you over your opinion is noted but there's no need to try to convince people who don't care otherwise. IAPs are optional. Kinda like the option to be a d-bag online.....

I bought it but haven't had a chance to play yet.
Just wanted to show my support to the developer.

Can't wait to dive in tomorrow.

funny stuff about iap in this game is that 5k (almost nothing) costs 1 buck, so i have changed my opinion, devs dont push players toward iaps.

endless mode is really nice. there is definitely replayability factor, at least for me. i think it's the best cd game.

To summarize, and add my experience, this is a side-scrolling defense game which is (1) nice looking; (2) very easy; (3) not well balanced, I beat the game using only a few of the units; (4) has a weak endless mode and (5) is somehow still fun.

Fun, but I couldnt recommend this to someone before stronger side-scrolling defense games like Paladog or Crystal Wars. That said, anyone that liked the movies or is loyal to Backflip cant go too wrong with this.

That is just about the same as my take, but (and maybe I've giving them too much credit here ;)), I don't think the game was designed for you to use all the units. Look at the achievements - fully upgrade this, fully upgrade that, blah, blah. Win with only this, win with only that, blah, blah...

You only do those achievements within a campaign by choosing a very specific subset of units and Ash powers and focusing on them (others could be achieved by a tremendous amount of grinding or IAP, but they are quickest and easiest to finish by replaying the campaign with a particular goal in mind).

Now, I still wouldn't call it balanced, but it looks more like they designed it to be very flexible.

Agree. Also, "not well balanced" isnt really a major criticism...most of the games of this type, even the stronger ones, arent that well balanced. Warlords II, Call to Arms (forget if this is what they called the IOS adaptation) would be an exception. Paladog, one of my favorites, is no better balanced than this one, but there are special enemy types & special stages which pose strategic challenges and require you to vary up your play. Crystal Wars, another favorite of mine, is only slightly better balanced than this one, as there are also units that slow and stun and AOE units. However, Crystal Wars is a good example of an endless mode done pretty well, in contrast to the current iteration of endless here. Basically, I'm looking for a "plus" factor to separate these games from the pack, and the only real plus factor I see on this one is that it is more attractive than most, which gives it a bit of character. Being easy also, lets be honest, makes it fun for a while (everyone likes a romp, at least for a bit), but one cant consider that a plus factor, especially since there are no difficulty levels.

Isit just me but this crashes back to the home screen after EVERY wave. I'm on iPod touch 4g with the the latest iOS update.
I'm going to have to wait for an update before I play this as it's real annoying having to load back up after every wave.

Hey, sorry it took so long to get back to you on this.

Here is an interview over on Gamasutra where they go in-depth about the development decisions in Infinity Blade. Page 4 has the relevant portion right at the top:

Began playing last night and this game is VERY good, especially for a buck!
Nice clean interface and graphics. Easy to get into and get moving along.

The sound samples constantly repeating themselves do get annoying,
but again, you can't complain for a buck.

Crisp, clean Retina graphics are apparent with a solid control scheme.
The IAP's are a flat out afterthought and don't interfere with the game at all.

Thanks for the positive impressions, they're accurate.
No wonder this hit the top 10 so fast. Good job developers!

Suggestion for the developer: It would be nice to know exactly how the sword boy and torch boy affect the units they enhance. For instance the sword boy gives the peasants swords, presumably increasing their damage, but for selecting units to use I would like to know exactly how much damage he gives them.

Very awesome of you to dig this up for us! I am not a fan of IAP, but it really does put a different spin on things when people actually contacted the developers REQUESTING it.

I guess this just shows that a new breed of gamer is emerging in the marketplace. Oh, well. There is room for the new age folks, as well as the traditionalists.
