I found a weird bug. I reached level 30 before. When I restarted the game few hours later I was back at level 15 with some upgrades gone. I could see that new units were unlocked but I couldn't use them. Does the game depend on being connected to Game centre to save progress? If yes then its probably not the best solution. I am playing again. Hopefully my progress won't get lost again.
Eh, I agree the Endless rewards are pretty meh, but I don't see how it pushes toward IAP: Endless mode is seemingly only there because it's expected, it's not particularly well done or anywhere near as fun as the campaign and, regardless of that, what purpose would IAP serve here? Paying to get GC achievements? The only thing further unlocks do in Endless is let you play more Endless and get to the unlock achievements, but if you don't care about the game enough to keep on playing it, do you really care enough to pay a LOT of money for some GC badges? According to my GC profile, in a little over a day I made about $750,000 coins in game, mostly finishing the campaign, that's like $37 worth of IAP if I were to buy it and I'm only about 1/3rd done with the unlocks. I guess there might be someone out there so OCD about this game that they are going to finish the campaign, think to themselves, "Self, sure, I could just replay the campaign a couple of times over the next few days and choose specific strategies to get these other achievements OR I could just play it in endless for a few weeks OR I could spend $75 on IAP for a $1 game so I can unlock these achievements right now! Yes, that's the ticket!" The IAP is there because it will bring them in some extra funds, but I don't see how it is needed for the campaign (knowing what I know now I could probably beat it in a few hours, and not knowing what I know now, I was still able to beat in under 8), and I don't really see how its useful in Endless since, well, it's endless. I figure I'm going to grind Endless just to finish unlocking a few more things, replay the campaign to unlock those campaign achievements I missed the first time through and then decide how I still feel about the game. It's almost certainly not going to be a permanent resident on my touch, and while it was a joyous no-brainer for $1, it's not worth any consumable IAP at all in my opinion.
i am not saying that you need iap or there is a sense to get it. just the prices for upgrades are designed in a way to encourage people, who like to try maybe different strategies and all skills, to buy iap or to grind endless mode. however as long as the game is beatable without iaps it's ok.
Hello! I'm Ben, one of the designers on Army of Darkness: Defense (I'm the long-winded one). Thanks so much for the feedback. We will look into this issue. I'm sorry you lost some progress, but hopefully we can fix it so other people won't suffer the same issue. I also want to address the concerns that have been expressed over the use of in-app purchases in the game. IAPs were never intended to be required for completing AoD. We are sorry that several people see IAPs and immediately feel like we are trying to cheat them out of a good experience if they don't pay more money. We believe (as many of you) that paid games shouldn't force players to make in-app purchases. You already paid for the game! We did, however, choose to follow the example of games like Infinity Blade, which was originally released without any IAP, but people demanded it. So, too, our game was designed to be fun and enjoyable without making any additional purchases. IAP is there for people who want to completely rock the game, or who don't want to go back and replay waves when they die, to allow them to shortcut. During internal testing, almost none of us ever used the in-app purchase feature (which was available for free at the time) because we wanted the game to be enjoyable for everyone who buys it. On a related note, we have found a few balance issues (such as how wave 49 kills you without mercy if you're not well-spec'd for it) that we will be addressing soon in an update, as well as a few other things like making the endless wave a bit more interesting. (; I'm so excited that we've had such an awesome reception from our fans! We are so happy to see our hard work paying off in how much everyone is enjoying Army of Darkness: Defense! So, on behalf of everyone here, thank you all so much!!!
I'm really not sure why the IAP in this game is filling some people with rage comparable to the fire of a thousand suns, as it's basically just tip jar IAP. If you want to give the developers some extra cash, you can. It's by no means required. Do you guys flip over tables on the way out of Starbucks because they have a tip jar out, giving you the option to pay more for your coffee if you want to support the people who are making it? I'd hope not, but nothing surprises me anymore.
Hey Ben! Thanks for the post. Personally I think the game is awesome, a steal at the .99 price. Thanks for staying true to the AoD fans. You guys really rock! -
To be honest those tip jars at counters always make me feel a bit uncomfortable. I won't tip people whose salaries aren't based on an expectation of tips (like servers, delivery people, etc.) but it makes me feel cheap when a I walk away without putting anything in there, and IAP in games like this also make me uncomfortable because I'm not sure what the ultimate price of the game will be, but I'm glad I looked past it in this case. I am really enjoying the game. I wish that endless mode was separate from the campaign, so you could play the endless mode but keep trying the campaign as well. I love the variety of units and am very pleased by all that was included from one of the greatest films of all time, but one notable exception (unless I just haven't seen it yet) is the car: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uwbggedckg0 (Edit: Nevermind the car is in there. Hooray ) I would also love to see maybe another environment for some variety, but overall I am very pleased with the purchase, and have felt no need at all to use the IAP. Edit: Also I think I found a minor bug. I happened to watch the intro via the options before I even started the game, so when I started I tapped the screen to skip the intro, and the game crashed. After I played a bit, I decided to reset and start from scratch and the same thing happened when I tried to skip the intro.
Besides plants vs zombies im not really into tower defense games. But i really like army of darkness, not just because i like the movies. But it's simple easy to play and very addictive. Started the game last night and before i knew i was level 22 and it was 2o clock in the morning, keep up the good work. You guys should include more levels in the next update!
@bharper_bfs Thanks for your reply regarding the issue. I have now finished the story and never thought I needed the IAP. The fact that you can accumulate collected coins even when you lose the level ensures that eventually you'll beat the game. Seriously, it was just one person criticising the game because of IAP. One person who actually played the game. Strangely I didn't feel that level 49 was too hard. Level 50, however I had to repeat a few times. I did it with a Bomstick and the Deathcoaster. Thank you for a great game.
The bottom line is, IAPs will invariably sacrifice a game's integrity to some extent. You saying that you "did it for us" is frankly insulting. People demanded IAPs for Infinity Blade? Really? What is your source for this information? Exactly how many people demanded them? Did they submit their demands in writing? Please share the facts if you have them.
When IB added the IAP for gold, the developer said something like: Due to popular demand we have added the ability to buy gold via in app purchase. Edit: Here you go, look under content pack 1: http://www.epicgames.com/infinityblade/updates.html
Yes, I was aware of that, thank you. Developers of Infinite Blade never substantiated those claims either though, to my knowledge. But who needs to? We all know proclamations such as "Back by popular demand!" are never merely marketing slogans, right?
Good Job on the game! Big Evil Dead fan. We faced similar criticism over iap with Legendary Wars and like in AODD it was completely optional and you could unlock everything in the game without purchasing IAP. The bottom line is that there are plenty of people willing to buy IAP to make the game more enjoyable for them and happy the option is there. If it's not required to play, then choose to ignore it. If you can't ignore it then you probably wont buy and support the game anyway. It amazes me what people will find to complain about when you can get a great game for under a buck. Keep up the good work.
Mate, I don't understand your hostility. The IAP is not shoved in our faces via popups, etc. Previously you mentioned that the game is balanced for IAP. Its clearly not true as a number of people who finished the game have reported that no IAP was needed to finish the game. I don't like IAP which unlocks extra levels, etc. because I like to have a game in its entirety (just in case). In case of this game IAP is TRULY optional. Devs are not trying to swindle us.
And I don't uderstand your tolerance. I don't think either of us is likely to impress the other from this point. Perhaps one thing we could agree on is that ALL IAPs should be disclosed prior to purchasing a game. Were that the case I wouldn't even be in this thread annoying you all with my extreme idealism.
I must say that although I'm not against all DLC, I agree wholeheartedly that it should be disclosed on ALL games that offer it. I know at least some games will show that "Top in app purchases" bar when you search through the app store. Does anyone know if there are those that don't? At least that would be some indication.
