maybe you should rather ask why should an ipad replace your laptop in the first place?

why should my ps3 replace my 360 or my wii? they are there to complement each other and give me a broader access to an bigger library than a single of thoose devices can.

why should i start into limiting myself to be a fanboy of some product x?
i have a win7 pc and and a osx pc.. why should they exclude each other?

you have an smartphone and an ipod.. which is in your terms odd since the smartphone should be capable of replacing the ipod.. assuming its an droid the gaming library is big enough to spend your hole life gaming on it..

*shrug* i don't see a reason to only have one or the other.. only like one or the other.. be a fan of one or the other.. i like french cheese with marmelade.. and chinese sweet sour soup ... combining things is awesome.. forcefully limiting yourself is .. well weird imho..

Can I just address the "iPad is 100% for media consumption" issue?

My father traded his laptop in for an iPad, and he uses it for business... He prepares and performs presentations on it with Keynote (and imported all his old PowerPoint ones to it), writes documents with Pages, manages his database with Access Mobile Database Client

    On my iPad I have:
Composed and rendered music on FL Studio Mobile
    Done photo-manipulation
    Created vector artwork
Written posts for my WordPress and Tumblr blogs
Managed and added to my notes via EverNote
    Edited and uploaded web pages

On my Samsung Tab I have:
Done in-depth image manipulation with Photoshop Touch
Created digital paintings for app backgrounds

And many of the things I have done on my iPad, only Android-ified.

as for win8.. i think it has a big chance to fail miserable..

windows vista showed that the windows folks like their os as is.. and do not like big experiments.. windows strength is that the users are used to it..
the term "never change a running system" is one of the most important fact on the windows domain imho..

and i don't want a tablet experience on a desktop.. i want a desktop experience.. i don't want unified mud across everything.. i want solutions that fits each device perfectly and not half assed attempts to make the "eierlegende wollmilchsau" because that won't work..

Yes, but the iPad is just a bigger version of my iPod. Well, at least, that's the conclusion I came to. And the screen real estate isn't a big selling point for me. Vice versa

The PS3 doesn't complement the Xbox 360 because they mostly do the same thing. IMO, XBLA is much better than PSN. As far as exclusive games there aren't that many, especially ones I want. Plus, I can just play on a friend's PS3. Vice versa

If you're an average Joe or non-technophile, why would you need both a Mac and a PC. I can see the point if you make a living using both.

Yes, I would only like to have one small mobile device. The only reason I have the iPod is for gaming. If all this could be on one device that'd be awesome.

Yes, but why do you need multiple devices to do this? If it all can be done easily plus more on a Windows 8 tablet, then why not get that?

The iPad is primarily for consumption, but everything else is an afterthought IMHO. This has also been expressed by lots of people that use laptops/computers more than I do.

For what I do, the iPad isn't replacement. For what i'm planning on doing in the future, the iPad is nowhere near a replacement. It's just an added accessory that I don't really need/want.

I don't, I had my iPad then I moved onto my Galaxy Tab. Was just explaining what an iPad can do, then what an Android Tab can do on top of most of those things.

I completely agree with this 100%.

That's pretty much what everybody says until they have one. Hell, it's what I said for years.

The larger screen is more of an advantage than people think, and apps do get redesigned for better multitasking (the two-column thing most apps gain is a huge advantage) and stuff like, well, how often do you actually use websites on your iPod? I can't imagine you using it for this forum, whilst once the screen is big enough it's perfect for the web (though the iPad's screen res is starting to struggle to fit a lot of good sites in), the touch interface adds so much to web browsing that I can't even begin to tell you, it's hard to go back! With the large screen, the touch keyboard essentially becomes a proper keyboard, once you get used to the lack of tactile feedback you can type just as fast as with a real keyboard. It's the 'media consumption' thing too. Sure, an iPod is fine for games (I'd argue against watching movies on a little screen like that, though) but once you start to create and work, it's just not big enough.

In a lot of situations, a smart phone is too small, and a computer/laptop is too cumbersome. Think of the number of mobile workers who need to update a database or store information on something, how many had to go back into their van to get on their laptop, or write stuff down in order to pay somebody to input back at the office, or do it all on some huge cumbersome PDA.

In these situations, iPad is absolutely ideal and I would argue for it being a completely necessary evolutionary step in technology.

As for casual users like you and me? Well, the one thing that it provides the most for me is taking the web with me. When I can't be sitting at a computer or dragging a laptop around, I can use the internet, and well. I never move my laptop unless it's for game dev work now. Seriously, there's no better way to browse the net than on a tablet.

I totally agree. Who wants an oversized iPod touch? No one in their right mind will ever buy one of these. I just hope there are enough asylums in the world to take care of those 55+ million mad men.

And don't forget what a horrible name apple chose for it. iPad? Why don't they just go with iTampon if that's what hey wanted. I cant dare be seen in public with that thing.

Wait, MS released a new windows OS? That too for tablets? Is it any good? How much does it cost? Where to I get one?

Again you're right. My iPad 1 is so not worth it's weight in gold. I mean who'd be dumb enough to pay $500 for something worth only $36000 (appx price of 700 grams of gold). It's just not enough!

@DistantJ Windows 7 is built into Windows 8. The only new thing really changed is the addition of "charms".

I've also seen Windows 8' Metro in action and everything but the main menu seems very, very functional for desktop use. I'd argue that it's better, even without personally testing it.

"Ivy Bridge" will only be an i3, but from my understanding, Windows phones are super smooth and pretty efficient. I'm assuming this will translate to the tablets. And if all the good ol' Windows devs start optimizing for tablet-PC, that's the icing on the cake. If the optimization is done any where near decent, it'll be better than iOS IMO. Edit:My bad! It looks like Ivy Bridge will actually be i5.

And the kicker is my mom's computer is an i3, without all the new implementations, and it runs very smoothly. It can't handle things as well as my computer, but things might be changing for the better once "Ivy Bridge" and Win8 is released.

Also add in a connections to your Xbox 360 and, boom, you have something that even appeals to 360 users.

Plus, people seem to really like the Metro styled XBLA update.

Man, I love the sweet smell of sarcasm in the morning.

    Do what you please.

Good to know that you can still use a proper Windows interface in Win 8. I was worried they'd thrown the whole thing away in favour of a tablet interface, which would be absolutely crazy.

I'm sure Windows 8 tablets will be great, never said they wouldn't be, but iPads are already out, the app store is already full, and they're already evolving.

I mean I'm probably sticking with Android for my tablets (though I do miss the iTunes store for iPad) because I just prefer the idea of OS' being built specifically for what they're running on rather than the 'one size fits all' thing (again, Jack of all trades = master of none), but only time will tell.

All the main advantages of tablets I mentioned will be present in a Windows 8 tablet, so go for it, and I hope you enjoy one, but I know that iPad is already tried and true, proven tech and everything for it is designed specifically for its hardware, and it'll only get better, whilst Win 8 tablets still have to get started (look at any early Android tablets and you can see how these devices have teething issues) and I can't shake the thought that they'll essentially be laptops with the keyboards lopped off.

You're not even a good anti-iPad troll. Seriously, this shit is straight out of early 2010 when everyone was high-fiving over what a failure the iPad was going to be. I just... I just refuse to believe you actually think the things you're posting. I'm not sure if things like this or the fact that you believe internet comments are worth reading is the bigger red flag that you're just trolling us.

It's almost night here. The top bar on my ipad says its 7pm right now. What are you talking about?
No no no no. Dont leave me hanging in the middle like this please. I need your advice on how to spend my hard earned monies coz being a sheep, I have no mind of my own. I've been spending so much money on apple stuff cos i didn't even know we had a choice. Thanks to you now I know there are other OS, computers, tablets and phones out there. It's such a revelation! You can't leave me now.

You'll have to help me decide what to buy and what not to for the rest of our lives. Isn't that your job? Telling others that they wasted their money on the wrong useless products even if they thought it was pretty good and worth their money. Isn't that why you've been arguing against the iPad for so long in this thread? So just do your frigging job and tell me what I should buy now. All this money is burning a hole in my wool pockets.

Yeah, I think Win8 will be delivered pretty well. It'll definitely have things to overcome, but it's what I see in the future of tablets. I don't think it will be a laptop without the keyboard because metro seems awesome and is being pretty well received. The fact that it has Windows 7 built in and optimized is a plus.

If Apple had something like this, I'd be all over it. If they were aiming for something like this I'd be interested. if I liked the apple environment I'd be interested.

I guess I'm just going to have to ignore Hodapp, since he's not adding anything meaningful to the conversation and calling me a troll to boot. If you don't agree with something and it turns into a conversation, you're a troll!?

Plus, everything he says sounds like elitist propaganda.

You're trolling because you're willfully remaining ignorant, and insisting on arguing from that standpoint as if it were fact.

How so? Because I don't like buying paperback books, $80 e-readers, or "beasts" $400 laptop (lol)? Or am I a fanboy because you saw the iPhone 4S under my username? Pathetic.

Don't get testy because I find your mostly novel alternatives amusing.

I didn't know books were novel!? I guess I haven't fully integrated into the digital world yet.

$500 for an ereader? Come on!

Do you have a TV and DVD player in your home? If so, why do you need to buy $20 virtual copies on an iPad, especially at a $500 entry price.

If an 10" portable web browser strikes your fancy then get one.

If you think the iPad 3 will be better than Win8 then buy one ASAP!

It seems as if most people don't even travel with iPads. The ones that do have a secondary device to go along with it. I'm just cutting out the $500 middleman.

No matter how good any "future" alternative might be, I won't be buying one in its first iteration. I REALLY don't want to put up with the whole winding up cycle and ending up with a bad taste in my mouth.
(if you must know, this is how I ended up with an iPhone vs a top-end Android phone)

I know, however, that the iPad will provide me a great experience straight from the box. AND there's an App Store? Win.
After my experience with android phones, android even for tablets is dead to me. Windows 8 is nothing more than speculation at this stage. Android had some goals too before it was released, and where are they now?

Well, I was never really into tablets before, so IDK on that front.

As far as, smartphones, Ice Cream seems to be pretty amazing. As far as people who have newer Androids, they experience no more problems than ppl seem to on iOS. But yeah, I can understand the bad taste part. It doesn't really affect me much because Apple has left a bad taste in my mouth as well.

My point (for ME) is that I'm not a believer in the current tablet functionality. So, without Win8, I'd never even fully consider one.

If Win8 can function nicely as a tablet-PC and run websites well, I could care less about the initial size of the Metro app store.

No. I bought an ipad2 in Christmas and I am quite happy with it, it fits my needs just fine and I don't feel the urge for an upgrade even though I am sure the retina screen will be amazing . I might consider an iPad 4 even though I am certain that the upcoming home consoles at that time, mid 2013 , will have stolen my mind ! :D

Yes, physical books are considered quite "novel", at least in my household. Aside from a dozen autographed novels, everything else in my library has been donated or recycled.

The iPad is a $500 tablet and not a $500 e-reader. And yes, I do have TV and DVD player. I don't buy $20 virtual DVD/Blu-Ray copies for my iPad thanks to Netflix and Hulu Plus.

    What's the problem again?
