Again, how are you quantifying this? When I play games like Infinity Blade 2 at 60FPS, how is that not using the hardware? When I use Safari and it renders the page as fast as I can scroll, how is that not using the hardware? You're taking marketing claims and trying to apply them to some imaginary benchmark that you can't even seem to define. Just because a GPU is "7 times as capable" doesn't mean graphics are going to look 7x better while polygon counts and texture resolutions increase by a similar factor. All it means is developers are able to use more shaders, raise their draw distance, and do it all at better frame rates. By that metric, nearly every game on the App Store is "using it." Of course you realize that the iPad not only sells incredibly well, but it also seems consumer satisfaction levels that are basically unheard of in the electronics industry. I'm not sure why it's so difficult for you to believe that there are 55 million iPads out there being used by people who feel they: a) Were totally worth the money. b) Fills a fantastic niche in their life. c) Worth telling their friends about. d) Like it so much they're excited for upgrades. ...As everyone I know who has an iPad fits all four categories. The only people who seem to care about ultra books, Windows 8 tablets, Android tablets, and other "unknowns" are people who irrationally hate Apple and will use inferior products to not be an "iSheep" and tech pundits who make their living link baiting by describing things as "iPad killers." If you want to see how far the competition has to go, pay attention to Mobile World Congress coverage next week. I promise it'll be hilarious.
I'll be getting the iPad3 as soon as it is available here (in France). I don't play that much with it because as a dev, I prefer creating games than actually playing them and really can't care less about the 3D feature. I've skipped the iPad2 (I own an iPad1). Just 1 iPad in a family of 5 is definitely not enough. A second one will be great and my kids and wife won't be stilling it all the time like they do now JC
Well, first off, at Hodapp, I don't understand how Ultrabooks are inferior to iPads. You're the only person that sounds like a "sheep" because you immediately call other products inferior, even though there are people who genuinely prefer non-Apple products for valid reasons. Apple has its flaws, so... I've been arguing practicality and nothing else. Well, at least, that's mostly what I was trying to argue. ---------- Hmm...I've been doing a lot of information indulging over the past hour, or so. Basically, I've come to the conclusion that this argument is pointless and that I'll be watching Microsoft very closely this year. Spend your money on what you want. I'm posting a link to one of the sites I found most helpful in the tablet vs. tablet/ Msoft vs. Apple debate. Use it mostly for the comments that are listed below the article. I think it'll help people release their evangelical, fanboyish viewpoints. Oh yeah! You'll have to read quite a bit before you really get into the meaty part of the debate/conversation. A lot of the first part was a flame war. http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/12/windows-8-tablets-world/ Honestly, after reading this, this is the first time I've truly considered getting a tablet. It'll probably still be used after my phone/iPod and computer.
Really? You don't seen how heinously underpowered laptops with horrible screens, even worse overall construction, and every corner possibly cut to keep margins razor thin and the price tag as low as possible are inferior to iPads? Maybe it's the Mac user in me, but I wholly believe you get what you pay for in regards to these ultra-low-end laptops. So many of these manufacturers are desperately trying to out-MacBook Air the MacBook Air while completely missing what makes the MacBook Air so great. It's sort of sad, really. First off, a good portion of my job involves looking for stories and keeping the TouchArcade ship on the proper course. This includes keeping on top of all other touch-based platforms that have potential to be major players in the gaming world. After all, the reason TouchArcade is as popular as it is is because were were one of the first kids on the block. I take Android (and similar platforms) seriously because the TouchArcade name is intentionally vague in the off-chance that we ever need to cover these other platforms. That being said, all of the non-iOS tablets I've either bought myself to try or have been sent review units of have been nothing short of absolutely dreadful. My bias towards the iPad is well-founded in a great depth of experience with other devices on the market. Hell, most of them you don't even need to do much more than pick up and feel the build quality. The corners that OEMs need to cut to compete on a pricing level is downright incredible. With Google completely dead set on fracturing the Android market into as many versions as possible, you've got to have a serious fetish for endlessly tinkering before finally settling on "eh, it sort of works for me" to buy something like a Transformer Prime over an iPad. lol.
Well, the ultrabooks are the only things I haven't really gotten my hands on, but the spec lists seem to be fine; at least the ones I looked at. That's ultimately why I was confused. Well, I'm assuming the last part wasn't directed at me, since I've been arguing the practicality/need for a tablet in the first place. As to the rest of it, I've seen plenty of people happy with non-Apple tablets. I've seen other articles made by established sites that don't always favor the iPad. At the end of the day isn't bias... bias? I use Apple products and can plainly see the faults - problems I have - on a day to day basis. I've also owned multiple smartphones myself. It wasn't the article but the comments. A lot of thoughtful, in depth, and objective thoughts about all platforms. Not a bunch of evangelical BS. The only market I haven't dove into is the tablet/ultrabook one, and I'm not some established review site. So, I have to go off of research and cross referencing. However, I have had the pleasure to do pretty much everything on iPad except personalize it. I also have some experience with the ebook, but it's not really comparable. I'm pretty much out of the conversation. People can waste their money on whatever they want. *Windows 8 just makes more sense to me than iOS/iPad. To each his own, and subjectivity/bias still isn't a fact.
I don't understand why $500 for a device you use for hours on a daily basis is considered a waste or even a lot of money for that matter.
It's only practical use is media consumption. If that's what you want than I guess that's what you like. IMO, it's a waste. I wish you would read through all the comments in the article I posted because they articulate the points very well. The Windows 8 tablet makes sense because it actually has the potential to make an all-in-one, so to speak. You're also talking about a device that will just be more functional in general. Obviously, this is a lot of speculation but it's what someone like myself would be inclined to by. I love the elitist comments. They never seem to stop amazing me. I'm sorry I don't want to pay $500+ for a device that serves no functional value besides consumption... consumption that I can actually get cheaper and don't have to pay a high entry price. I'm also sorry that my PC is a champ and cheaper than a Mac. IMO, it sounds like a case of propaganda and indoctrination. Why not go and start rebutting all of the comments on the site I posted. It would be ever so nice to get your viewpoint.
This whole discussion is just silly. Goofy's arguments against the iPad are like someone who argues that the iPod Touch is a waste of money because you can buy a 10$ mp3 player everywhere.
Pretty much this. Everything else comes down to that this is a very pro-Apple site. No point in carrying on.
I don't really have time to pick them out of these incoherent ramblings about how the iPad is too expensive, if you want to compile them into a list I will answer one by one.
I didn't really see too many about the iPad being too expensive. I did see some it's 'not worth it's weight in gold' comments, but they were few and far between. Most of the debate was about practicality and usefulness. There was also some efficiency stuff thrown in, plus the whole virus hooplah. TBH, a lot of the later debate is about the business side of things. But no, I don't really want to either.
Wow. I had no idea that I wasted my money by getting the iPad 1. The same thing which I've used for last 18 months and loved enough to shell out for a new one again this year. Thanx man! You just saved me and my family almost 2 grands. Was about to get an iPad 3 for myself, one for my son and wife and another one for my niece. That's 3x$600 saved!!!! I'm gonna get a couple of ultra books with windows 7 instead. I love mac OS and hate windows computers but what do I know. I'm just a mindless sheep like the millions others out there. Thanks for opening my eyes and showing me the light
i alwasy wanted a phoen that cudnt make calls and didnt fit in my pokket so to anser ur qweustion., yes im geting one
