So, I don't understand the need for it. The thing is you guys think I'm being a troll, but I'm not. I just don't get the psychological pull to the iPad besides the cool factor. A true tablet-PC makes sense to me. I don't understand how anyone can watch the developer demos and not get excited about the potential of Win8!? It makes the iPad look even more like a toy than it already does. Plus, the touch interface is far superior IMO, but that's highly subjective. I know a lot of ppl, including myself, like Metro for Xbox. Plus, there's Windows 7 right there. Do you actually travel everywhere with your iPad just to use it as a browser?
Good thing you aren't buying an iPad or footing the bill for someone else's. People have listed their reasons for wanting/needing an iPad but you've mostly disagreed about their need and suggested alternatives. Regardless, both sides have remained entrenched in their opinions so the discussion of "need" is moot. No, of course not. I didn't buy a $500 tablet solely to browse the web.
Lol, you're right! The only thing I've come to see that the iPad serves a functional value for iPad gaming and maybe ease of use. All of the Apple stuff just doesn't make sense to me, but I'll just chalk it up to subjectivity. I guess I'll just sit back and wait for the release of Win8. If you don't mind me asking, what did you buy it for? Gaming? *Plus, I'm pretty sure I called this argument pointless a few pages ago.
Yes please, do wait for Windows 8. That seems like a fantastic idea. Hopefully you can wait for it somewhere other than this thread.
If they're sticking to a dual core then what is the point? The screen in the iPad 2 is good enough and all Apple will do is make the cams slightly better and that is it. I'd personally wait for Quad Core and a new OS design cause IOS is so dated now.
Out of curiosity, what need do you have for a quad core processor that a higher clocked dual core processor can't do a better job of on device with the multitasking implementation of iOS?
Well that is why I said a new OS cause IOS is dated. What can the dual core of the iPad 3 do that the iPad 2 cannot? Nothing. So I'd rather have a meaningful upgrade to quad core.
I know what I'd like to do like Encode video or play intensive games that actually have good physics and A.I. I'd like to have multi tasking where I can dedicated cores to certain things like in Windows. If Apple released an iPad with 4 cores they would support it out of the gate and we'd see these features. However Apple like come along with their hype machine and pretend like they changed the world with innovation when it happened years ago.
Hey Gang, I'm very interested but hesitant (even beyond the expense I can't really justify). This new Retina HD res sounds niftier than all get out but then frightens me... 1) Will this doom universals that will now need to support 4 different resolutions? 2) What kind of RAM will this puppy ship with since there is no way a mere 512M is going to cut it? 3) If this supports LTE will this raise that age old 20M non-wifi limit since these new apps taking advantage of the new wonder resolution will be HUGE?
If it's including retina at that resolution based on previous apps going universal I'd expect the filesize to increase two to three times for each app. Probably best just to kill Universal at this stage the idevices don't have enough space.
well universal support will be tough in file size if you support all resolution steps (sd & hd ipad/iphones) .. if you design ahead you can usually use most of the iphone retina gfx-sets for the ipad version.. so an old universal is usualy just a bit bigger than an iphone exclusive.. but with retina ipad files.. especially 2d games will be huge. with this huge gap in screen resolution the best way would be to go 3d.. like on pc you use the same texture, models etc. at different rednering resolutions.. thats then quite efficient in size. as for cpu.. i dont see the need for a slow quadcore.. a speedier dualcore will be better.. i only hope for a beefier gpu for all the extra pixels to push and a meaty ram upgrade to store all the extra pixels you want to show
If you can see the point in a Win 8 tablet, then you can see the point in an iPad or an Android Tablet. They're the same freaking thing but with a different OS. If you feel more can be done on a Windows tablet, that's only because of the existing line of Windows software, and there's a huge existing line of iPad software, but in this case, specifically designed for touch screens (just try applications built for mouse-hover, right-click menus etc. on a touch screen). End of. Oh and, you say "JUST to browse the web" as if that's one crappy little thing, the internet isn't to be sniffed at, just look at the size of it and the unlimited amount of... STUFF you can find and do, but until now it could only be done when you were cramped around a computer screen. Tablets are a huge evolution of computer, Win 8 or not, and they enhance the web browsing experience in ways I can't even begin to express. Personally when I watched the Win 8 demo and heard them say "Internet Explorer" I was already turned off.
The Win8s are actual tablet PCs. It's pretty much the epitome of a portable computer. I've been researching Win8 tablets extensively here lately and there's no comparison at all. The two are in different categories. And yes, I'm liking the streamlined OS that Windows offers. There's a huge focus on integration. I'm not a fan of apps, so I can't wait to switch this year. It also seems like Win7 phones are the smoothest. I hope this holds true once I finally pick one up. For someone like me, a Win8 tablet and a Win7 phone would be enough...easily. I was wrong to even bring Win8 up in this thread.
Well, it looks like Windows figured something out. There's talk about Wacom digitizers and Microsoft's new touch input technology. Plus, there's Win7 built in so it works perfectly fine with a mouse and keyboard. They're also using "Sandy Bridge" which is an i5 Intel (x86) processor made for tablets. Also, the OS for Metro looks ridiculously tablet friendly. I'll send you a couple of articles and vids about the new tech. Plus, I've used the iPad and it's definitely not what I'd pick for heavy multitasking. *Microoft isn't playing around. **Also, I'm trying to bow out of this convo and just let time tell.
So getting personal now? Thats not necessary isnt it? Maybe you can ask your friend at apple what cpu the ipad3 carries since he already told you how he wanted to innovate the ipad ... Its all speculation till the ipad is offically announced and inofficialy disected. the same applies to win8 .. if there is a win7 underneath one can get their dream convertible, slate or tablet pc for quite some time.. no beed to wait for silly metro skin which has no real place on a system with a precise stylus as an input device.. and imho the latest 360 update with the new gui is horrible.. but apparently ms need to change the interface every few month because they are bored to death.. at least they now got a cluttered , horrible to navigate but nice looking gui.. including ads.. yeah!
Well, taste is subjective. Personally I'd be using Win7 when I docked the tablet, but I'd be using Metro when it wasn't. I actually really like Metro and think it's the best touch implementation so far. And then I'd have my streamlined Win7 phone for actual 'on the go' type stuff. I didn't have any problems navigating the new Metro dashboard. *I watched a ton of vids comparing iOS 5 to Win7.5 and it comes down to personal taste. I think that a windows phone would be more efficient.
No, they're not. Have you forgotten how hyped Windows Vista was? How did that turn out? My point is, stop trying to accept speculation as fact. Until they are available en masse, nothing they say can be proven. And as opposed to the iPad, which has already proved quality over two previous versions.
I've said it was speculation ad time will tell. Do I have to hashtag it from now on? How come only Mr. Ugly and DistanJ don't go all crazy. Excuse me if I've misinterpreted you posts. To who? (rhetorical) It hasn't proved that to everyone. I'm still not a fan of it. I had problems with my 3G. I have problems with my Touch 4. I'm not a fan of apps, which is why I'm leaning towards Windows phones. Plus, if anything, the big selling point of Win phones is the buttery smoothness/responsiveness. There also seems to be less problems. So for me, a 4.3" Windows phone easily beats out the iPad due to how I'll use it on the go--quick and light browsing, social networking, texting, calls. Plus. it's all streamlined and integrated. A lot of Metro for tablets is like this, which is why I'm excited. So much unbridled disdain for Windows. I just don't think Apple makes efficient products. I'd totally rid myself of them if it wasn't for gaming and there's a ton of hassles with that too.
