You are correct in saying that chinatown wars is not 2d (for from it), you are wrong in saying that it is isometric. An isometric view of an object can be obtained by choosing the viewing direction in a way that the angles between the projection of the x, y, and z axes are all the same, or 120°. Chinatown wars would have to not have a fully rotational camera in order for it to be isometric, I think what you mean is 3/4 view camera. I still consider it to be a top-down GTA, but not 2d.
Ah, yes...3/4 view. That's the proper term. Thanks for the correction. Anyway, I wouldn't say it's top down because that 3/4 view changes things pretty significantly, particularly with the rotatable camera system. Obviously driving is significantly different, for one, as you can see further ahead of you. If you'll recall, the big change that the update to Payback brought (going from strictly top down to 3/4 view) alleviated a lot of the issues people had with driving in that game simply because they could now see turns ahead, or lamp posts (the bane of the player's existence in the first Payback release ), etc. Combat too is different, as you can more readily think out strategy before you do something since you can see enemies further off in the distance than with a strictly top down viewpoint, if your view is obstructed by buildings you can change up the camera to see things better, etc.. It makes a pretty sizable difference, IMHO. With CTW, I don't feel like I'm playing an old school GTA game. I felt that way with GTA: Advance on GBA...but not with CTW. Obviously I don't feel like I'm playing the GTA III style system in CTW either, but it sure as heck ain't exactly like old school GTA. It's...I really think it's a different beast altogether. The iso...sorry o) 3/4 perspective along with the rotatable camera makes it feel quite different.
I swore to myself never to buy a GTA rip-off again unless the physics were real and the car could take damage etc. GTA CW would be the best GTA ever created if it was adapted for the 360, PS3 and PC consoles. [Multiple Perspectives, Cutscenes, Voice Over etc. added obviously]
I wouldn't say that Gangstar has made them redundant. Sure, games like GTA: CTW aren't 'technically' an Over-The-Top view, but I think people are happy to let them slip into that catagory. I think if the game has the right resources and has had a lot of attention given to it, why not? If CTA: CTW was ported to the iDevice, it would wipe the floor with Gangstar. Sure, it had a more experienced team and a bigger budget, but then that wasn't the question.
+1 As much as I loved playing it on my DS, I can't help but think that Rockstar are sitting on a goldmine... release it as a downloadable game on PSN & XBOX Live and they'd sure see a massive surge in sales that was, unfortunately, a little underwhelming with the DS version. Saying that though, I don't know if Nintendo had some kind of exclusivity deal on it or not?
They don't. A port of the game has already been announced as in development for PSP. Why PSP? Apparently of the handful of million sellers on that portable system, both the GTA: _Stories games make the list. So Rockstar probably feels that it would do better on PSP in terms of sales. I don't know how they'll handle the touch stuff in the game though using the buttons and analog stick on PSP. It would probably do well on iPhone/touch, and Take 2 Interactive (Rockstar's parent company) does have some games released for this platform. But probably Sony slipped some money under the table or Rockstar is a little put off by the App Store. Either way, I think the game would've fit better here than on PSP, tbqh. DS to iPhone/touch ports have already happened, after all.
Well, Rockstar indicated in a follow-up Tweet that the PSP version would be available on UMD as well as digital download, so it's looking very possible!
That may be true, but I doubt the game is coming to the appstore. Rather on the PSPN store for the PSP Go (because it doesn't play UMDs)
