It's pretty amazing to think about how novel this event seemed back in 2009 when it first happened. It pretty much gave birth to FAAD and all the similar companies. Back when those things didn't exist and it was rare for a good game to go free people were going crazy over Appvent. Was that really only 2009? Two years on the app store feels like an absolute eternity.
Yeah, I jointed TA in June of 2009 -and to me it seems like around the birth of the world... fire and brimstone - although games were dropping like flies in prices at that time... When the iPhone 3Gs hit, the appstore went crazy with new games, and the competition for the $0.99 sale was on...
Yeah, I received my first iPod Touch right around that time, June 2009 (it took me a couple months to get into gaming and then a couple more to find TA) and that really feels like a lifetime ago in terms of the way the app store and its games have changed. Anyway...I have so many games that I really don't know what I'd hope will drop to free. Most of the things I've wishlisted and are waiting to purchase are rather obscure compared to what we'll probably see here. In fact I'd feel bad even mentioning games I want to go free because I don't want to disrespect developers in suggesting that I wouldn't want to pay for their work...
No, the race to the bottom has started before that. It existed as early as a few months after iPhone 3G / Appstore launch. I followed Appstore since its launch because that was pretty much the thing that convinced me to get the iPhone. I just knew it would be HUGE and be the selling point of iPhones. I was right android, nokia, windows and other copycats started their copy machine soon after.
I got my first iPhone in Sept of 09 and didn't find Touch Arcade or the gaming community until Feb of 10. Even the changes I have seen with free app sites and the growth of TA, I can't imagine the beginners and what it was like before appshopper and everything was word of mouth. Interesting stuff though. What I'm hoping for? Sway! (and it ain't gonna happen) =P
Yep, Illusion Labs is one of the few devs that never does sales. All their games are incredible in any case. Lots of respect there.
It does seem like forever since the first Appvent calendar hit. It was so exciting to see the new app each day. We've been so spoiled since now that there are multiple free app a day sites. I will pay tribute to the first site though and follow every day again. And Sway - worth every penny I paid for it. It was a groundbreaking game.
Yep, I definitely have respect for all the devs that stick to their pricing guns...although Sway is one game that I haven't ever brought myself around to purchasing. Just seems like there is always something else immediately in my sights any time I am looking to spend a 5 spot on the app store.
