Hey guys, looking for a simple 8-Bit emulator app that you can record with and such. I want to get down on making some Chiptune music and have a blast with that. I have Beatmaker 2, Nano Studio, GarageBand, etc. and they have Bit Crushers, but it's not the same for me. I want a close to as humanly possible 8-Bit emulation feel in the app.

Tried that PixiTracker and while it was okay, I want something better. Don't really care about the cost. Any help would be great thanks!

any users of iReal B here? It is an excellent app and community with tons of charts included, and tons being released all the time on the community forums for free. There are some in-apps for additional playback options, and it is definitely worth it to have this app in your pocket if you are a practicing musician.

App info is currently processing and/or the app is not yet fully available for sale on the US App Store.

I am also planning on getting the songsterr app - but I am not sure if it does full song playback or just instrument playback on the device.

8-bit recording? As in recording samples (i.e. Datacette in a C64) or recording beats?

First thing that comes to mind is Nanoloop (which I love on the GameBoy, haven't bought the iOS version)

App info is currently processing and/or the app is not yet fully available for sale on the US App Store.

There is a lite version as well.

If you don't mind building your own circuits, Jasuto Pro might suit your needs - it's very flexible (Take their vocoder example and remove some of the bands for some serious lo-fi sound...)

App info is currently processing and/or the app is not yet fully available for sale on the US App Store.

Glitchmachine might be a little too lo-fi for your needs (very much like a broken Atari 2600)

"great lil noisemaker! do like." -- @deadmau5 "This app is great." ... "who needs an arp when you have #glitchmachine" -- @DjAero Glitch Machine is a generative music synthesizer. Expressions are edited live to produce sound interactively. The magic of Glitch Machine's synthesis is in the BYTE, which wraps a final output value to a number between 0 - 255. The repeating patterns (or chaos) of this 'wrapping' produces waveforms and beats. Features: - Interactive, live code editing, code line muting - Waveform and data visualizations - Live performance features such as XY pads, sliders, and code preset triggers - Fast-forward, rewind, pause, and single-step through your expression's waveform - 100 levels of undo/redo - Saved custom sessions - Expression sharing via email and Twitter - WAV export to iTunes - Save and load expressions - Supports all device orientations - Configurable theme

Aside from that, we need Electron to release a SID Station app. :p There was a good SidStation sample set for ReBirth, but I have no idea if you could hack it into the iOS verison.

Thank you VERY VERY much for this. I will look into these, as the only one I have heard of, is Nanoloop (and yeah it was on a gameboy as well) and is actually what peaked my curiosity. I make all kinds of music, but Chiptune is going to be new for me to make. So I just wanted a simple something to learn the ropes. I saw this app

    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nesynth/id323362982?mt=8

But it doesn't seem to have a recording feature at all. I don't want to make the sounds just to dick around with them, I want to actually make all the music (Beats/Synths/Etc.) to make full songs. So yeah. That's sorta what I am looking for.

You may be happy to know SID Station is actually already part of ReBirth on iOS. :) There are six mods included with ReBirth, one of them is SID Station 2.0. At least this is how it is on the iPad.

Booch138, PixiTracker may be something to look at, too.

App info is currently processing and/or the app is not yet fully available for sale on the US App Store.

That is good news! Love it on PC, never bought the iOS as I don't have an iPad and I hear the interface is not so good (especially on the iPhone) and it's not universal...

I haven't played with it, but here's one I had wish-listed for some time, that might be usable (unsure if it's a real synth or just sample-based:

Regarding ReBirth, the interface is weak, but it is still incredible fun to create stuff.

The interface looks like a lower res bitmap is used for the iPad screen, so it's just not sharp. That is one of the problems. Then, it's also rather cluttered, so you need to be REALLY careful about what button you are tapping on the drum sections. And third, my favorite mod (Orbit 2.0) is so dark, it's tough to see which way switches are pressed.

Ah, you are right. Too bad it isn't Universal.

    Away from 8-bit...

If anyone has the slightest interest in notation, the nbuy this one quickly !
NOTION, the notation editor and player app is priced at just $0.99 until the 21st of December, so don't miss out. After that it goes up to $14.99.

There is some IAP for extra instruments but nothing essential.

And another just out introductory price is Rockmate is still only $0.99 until the 21st.

For less than 2 dollars, you get a lot of app with these two. :)

    Rockmate is pretty fun.

Animoog just hit the iPhone, normally I'd complain about the double-dip, but at $0.99 each (iPad release price was $0.99), it's not so bad. (Filtatron is universal)

App info is currently processing and/or the app is not yet fully available for sale on the US App Store.

Definitely not as visually 'cool' as on the iPad, but a neat instrument with quite a bit of depth.

EDIT: Only for iPhone4/4th gen iPod Touch and up.

Hey everyone. I'm considering buying a smartphone in the near future, and my two top canditates at the moment are the iPhone 4 (16GB) and the HTC Desire HD. Yeah, I know quite different.

Anyway, there are tons of musician apps for the iPhone, but for Android? I could only find 2-3 simple recorders and a tuner. (ok, there was a mention of a virtual piano as well... along with a mention that it is laggy, with some dev commenting that the Audio APIs for Android were no good for real-time audio). Any other notable musician apps (thinking esp. about daw controllers etc)? Any Android dev here who can comment on the audio apis?

Next paragraph is more "ranty" so feel free to ignore it.

Another (bad) reason for me to tend towards the iPhone is the availability of better games (yeah.. i know). Personally I think the main reason beside the lower popularity would be the fact, that up to android 2.1, apps could only be stored in phone memory (which is usually tiny, and games tend to be big). Very stupid limitation, if you ask me. Luckily resolved with android 2.2, so there is hope in the future...

You should check out Palm Sounds (http://www.palmsounds.net/). They discuss all sorts of apps for portable devices. I really like that site and have found it very helpful for iOS music apps.

I see Android-related apps get mentioned every so often.

Anyone have thoughts on AmpKit vs. Amplitube? I already have Amplitube, but I haven't always been happy with it. Ampkit is $10 off right now. Thanks

Looptastic: All-time best price for the first and a limited time!

    iPhone/iPod touch version $9.99 -> $4.99:

    iPad version $14.99 -> $.99!!!

Tested with AKG and Sennheiser headphones on iPad 2: Sounds very good and professional. There are—besides the shipped 900 loops—several FREE (and paid) additional downloads available in the "Loop Shop" (from Countrymusic to Ambient). You can import your own loops as well. Very good equipped with sound specific options. Tons of updates since launch (iPhone version: 2009), the last one at the end of Nov '11.

    Highly recommended!

NEW and time-limited launch sale: 'Animoog for iPhone'

    iPhone version $9.99 —> $.99!!! (In words: A buck.) Don't miss that, folks! It's a steal.

App info is currently processing and/or the app is not yet fully available for sale on the US App Store.

Tested it for some minutes on iPhone 4: Technically it's exactly the same thing like the iPad version, the same features, the same gorgeous sounds. The controls are smaller naturally but easy accessible. Very well adapted: As you can see in the second screenshot there is a special iPhone mode to have the 'slideable' keys almost as large as on iPad.

Even more unbelievable what such a small device can produce.

iPad version $29.99 -> $9.99 was in one $.99-sale before (other than a launch sale) but only for one day in Nov '11:

App info is currently processing and/or the app is not yet fully available for sale on the US App Store.

Clearly one of the best apps for iOS. I have the iPad version since it came out and it's just GREAT. Hypermodern sounds without end! Reason enough to buy an iOS device. A bit snappier on iPad 2 than on iPhone 4 naturally. Five stars without any doubt and hesitation.

Highly recommended for all electric musicians!

(Plz have a look at my blogposting for some more sound demos.)

Sorry. Saw drelbs' posting too late.

Just a reminder: Korg's iKaossilator (now Universal App) is on launch sale until Dec 30!

Hope I'm not too late to chime in...*groans*

My app of choice for this purpose would be [app]8-bitone+ MICRO COMPOSER[/app].

If you also want to listen to some reference material, [app]Modizer[/app] is a must-have; Universal, quality updates, and low-cost.

[app]Sid Player Pro[/app] was my previous goto for playback, and it's great, but Modizer works on the iPad too. BTW, it has a strange 3-track mixer that lets you fiddle with other artist's tracks.

    Have fun!

The iPad is hands-down the best and most cost-effective music production tool available, with amazing app diversity, the highest quality apps, and a form factor that makes it feel professional.

First-runner-up is the iPhone and the power of the current selection of apps is astounding. You're talking about 4 apps on the Android and I have over four complete screens of apps for iDevice. Over a page of them, I'd call top-tier apps.

If you are heavy into music production, you absolutely have to get an Apple product. The quantity and quality of the gaming apps is unmatched, as well.

I have it since it came out for Mac/PC and iOS. Sounds exactly like the real thing. Belongs to the basic equipment for techno music. Perfect for iPad.
