BM2 has nice record/edit functionality, but is geared towards sampling a note or a loop and using it in conjunction with other notes / loops. You can edit the samples in-app. Effects can be added.

FourTrack & Monle are more like the recording studio where you sit down and record yourself playing say, a guitar. Then go back and dub in a bass. Then Drums, etc.

Hot damn, this was an expensive week!

What's the verdict, is the Tenori-On mobile version a winner? My wallet still stings from a recent purchase of FruityLoops, but this app looks like total win.

I've seen nothing but good things about it. Waiting on a payment from one of those sites to have the $20 for the app, as soon as I see my PayPal account rise, I'ma downloading this sucker!

VJFranzK has some excellent videos of it in action alongside the real thing. Seems his only complaint is the brightness of the background (i.e. playing the real thing in the dark you only see the LEDs lit, not the whole thing...)

It seems identical to the real ($700+) thing except it's missing Advanced Mode and doesn't support user samples.

Either way, I've been yearning for one of these things ever since I first played with a freebie knockoff on iOS, and have been enjoying the hell out of SoundGrid, and just drool at the thought of being able to play with this synced with several devices via wifi. Sucks that it uses GameCenter for networking though - I share my iTunes account with Mrs. Drelbs, hope I don't have to create other accounts just so I can try this out...

I recently got an iPad 2 and am looking for an app to use for recording demos. I'd be using it for live instruments and vocals (so something like beatmaker isn't quite what I'm looking for).

I've been eyeing StudioTrack, but I'm not sure it's worth $20 since I already have FourTrack on my iPhone.

I was also wondering if there were any multitrack iPad apps that allowed you to visually see wav forms and slide them around like in a traditional DAW on a PC or Mac since that's the way I'm used to working....

Anyway, any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

sweetdis: I think Monle will let you arrange clips visually.

djflippy: I just spent lunch playing with TNR-i. So far, it's great! It feels a little cramped compared to SoundGrid, though that might just be due to the graphical style. I'd love to see a black/dark grey background in place of the included one, especially since the app doesn't exactly mimic the Tenori-On visually anyway - lit played notes are 'hollow' (see pic.) Recording captures everything, meaning you can set up some loop parts, start recording, tweak away, then stop and save. You can use real Tenori-On settings/songs here and vice-versa.

    TNR-i

    SoundGrid

The main differences between the two are that a lot more is accessible quickly in TNR-i: you hold down one of the buttons in the lower right/left and select something on the grid (the scroll wheel at the bottom works, but I see no real reason to use it.) Once you know where things are, it's really quick, and you can make some nifty changes on the fly, which I can see as being essential for live jamming. SoundGrid has you tap one of the side tabs, make changes and tap the tab to close it. TNR-i's system/file/etc menus break away from the hardware look to a more default iOS UI which breaks the overall feel a bit, but the functionality is there (and boy I'd hate to navigate all the menus using the tiny scroll wheel!) TNR-i seems to set notes faster (push+hold) than SoundGrid, which took me a little getting used to.

Both apps seem to have pretty easy file sharing - SoundGrid lets you upload/download songs & samples in the app itself. TNR-i doesn't have user samples (yet?)

Neither have an audio mixdown - you have to record using another device. :(

It's too bad SoundGrid Live! is a separate app - I'd have liked to compare TNR-i to it instead of the original, as I bet it adds some of those type of features, but I don't have the $3 in the account to pick it up. ;)

Overall $20 in some ways feels steep for TNR-i - but then again the real thing is $700+ and can't be put on a device that fits in your pocket. I can't say I'd tell everyone to rush out and buy it, but if you've been wanting the real thing like I have, it's a bargain.

I'll come back and let you know how well it runs networked after I've had a chance to try that out.

@drelbs - Excellent impressions. Just what I needed to push me off the fence. :)

I share your view on the UI choices and if it doesn't support my own samples, it's a big drawback, but I'll buy it inhopes that it helps funds some updates for us.

I'll pick up SG Live to return the favor, when I have a moment.

    Thanks, drelbs.

Hey, no problem. Been dying to play with it ever since I caught word of it here, sitting here going "I'm $3 short!" :(

I'm adjusting to the workflow well on it, but still trying to wrap my head around the layers/blocks schema. I found that this video helped a lot:

I still believe that if you want to sit back and sequence something, the workflow in SoundGrid is much more UI driven and easier, but TNR-i blows it's socks off once you have a few layers populated and are just jamming along. I really, really, really can't wait to play with this on an iPad (we will be getting one for my daughter at some point... Bought iMS-20 when it was on sale and want to play with that one as well!)

Here's a great link I found for Tenori-On stuff - this guy has several free albums for download and if you read through his "Love your Tenori-On" series he provides some song/config files and even walks through creating a few of his songs...

Has anyone here played with Aurora Sound Studio? I saw many references to that when I was digging for Tenori-On stuff, but it didn't look like it was that much better than SoundGrid (which was 1/10th the price for me. ;))

Now that you mention that, I got that when I first started it up (and can get that again if I hit menu/clear. Had so much fun with this yesterday I completely forgot about it. At the time I figured it was due to the sucky public WiFi we have here at work (has a web click-through you have to hit about once an hour, ugh.)

I'm on an iPhone4 with the US version, not sure if it's specific to either/both of those conditions. Need to snag a buddy's iPad and try it this weekend - have a few older devices I can try it on as well.

What's odd, is that I do sometimes get the GameCenter screen, and sometimes a matchmaker error, but usualy an account authentication error or "not recognized by Game Center" error.

I sent a support request to Yamaha regarding the Game Center issue.

Have verified with another TNR-i - US user on the iPad that he gets the GC error as well.

I have found a (crude) way to change the background image - there's two PNG files in the app directory that the app draws from, you can download these (convert from Apple's wacky format) change'em and re-upload them.

Here's my quick 'n dirty 'contrast down 120%' version for iPhone:

Use iPhone Explorer to copy that into the app's directory.

Why it has those vertical lines, I'm not sure, but at least the lights stand out better now. I still need to darken the bottom/right edges of the lights to match the new background... Then comes making the half-lit lights brighter. ;)

This app broke my mind. I just can't believe such a powerful, usable, and fun tool can be had for a measly 20 bucks. In college, it felt like we were spending our life's savings every time we wanted to add a keyboard to our setup. This thing is amazing. I am using it on an iPad 2 and it's as though I've added a whole new instrument to my arsenal, just like back in the day. Drelbs is right, playing this live is unmatched. Everything is so fast and accessible, once you get over the barrier to entry he mentioned. It is playful enough to allow for a broad path of discovery and simply allows you to create. I highly recommend this to anyone that wants a serious, but unintimidating, professional-level tool for music production.

    DM1 - The Drum Machine

App info is currently processing and/or the app is not yet fully available for sale on the US App Store.

esp. since CoreMIDI, Sample Im- and Audio Export and AudioCopy are already in the making. Otherwise it would have been just another toy.

    Thumps up!

apologies if this is a stupid question.

nanostudio 1.2 added sequencer tracks to each instrument. is there any way to mix those tracks independently of one another? i have two sequencer tracks running on the same eden synth, but i'd like to be able to change volume/pan/etc. if possible. is it possible?

edit: i've found the volume control in the event editor within the part editor, but that seems to shift the volume of the entire track rather than just the selected part?

edit edit: may have found it with the velocity editor.
