I have to agree. I heard a sample of this several days ago and quickly decided I would not be making the purchase. Reminds me of the sounds in the old arcade video games as well as old computer games .... all I see in my head is some pixel man jumping on a pixel mushroom head and then side scrolling on his way to stomp on more pixel bad guys.

It's a chiptune app. People will either love it or hate it. I love some classic chiptune soundtracks, but never really tried to compose some. Now I can give it a shot.

That looks amazing. I know it's not the cheapest (being $8.99), but I may buy it. 8bit music is seriously amazing.

Thank you ..... I just learned something. After googling "chiptune" I now know why it sounds like old computer games to me ..... duh.

Not all chiptune sounds like old computer game music. More modern chiptunes sound a lot different. Try listening to artists such as Slagsmalklubben, Unicorn Kid, Machine Supremacy, or Kkrusty. They can use chiptune in conjunction with other beats to make a neat twist on the average chiptune.

I took a listen to Slagsmalklubben and Unicorn Kid .... thank you for pointing that out to me. Still ... not quite my thing but I can see how this app would be very exciting to quite a few musicians. I'd love to hear some of the music produced from this app. If you do something you'd like to share .... I'd love to listen. Thanks!

I recently bought Chordlab and so far am pretty impressed! It's a little steep at $9.99, but as a songwriter for a band the ability to look up chords based on the notes that I'm playing it's definitely worth it. Also a big fan of the Circle of 5ths feature and the fact that you can arpeggiate the chords during playback.

    Hello all!

I was wondering if anyone knew of a simple app that lets you compose little song ideas. Either using a staff, or a piano roll, I'd just like to be able to fire it up and save a melody, with maybe a bass line as well, something simple like that.

From skimming this thread, I've seen iComposer and even possibly 8bitune, but both of those (along with Beatmaker, obviously) are a little expensive.

I guess I'm looking for something more along the lines of the little melody creators they used to have on Nokia cell phones and stuff that let you compose simple ringtones and stuff.. that was perfect for quickly saving little song ideas.

    Thanks in advance!
    - Nate

Just noticed [app]Sonify[/app] which is an app which you make remixes. Description isn't too detailed, but I guess it utilizes Bluetooth. I might get it. Does anyone have it and confirm its use? Can you use your own music?

I'm thinking about grabbing this one as well -- it's by the musician BT (Brian Transeau) and it's geared towards live remixing of music (including the BT "Stutter Edit").

BT posted this on his wall on Facebook about it:

I have a pet peeve with developers who don't put up a demo of their app on youtube or on their website. I have found that the majority of music apps that have flaws or just plain sound bad don't have demos. I usually don't trust the reviews of a new app when it gets a bunch of 5 star ratings within 2 days of release as they are often friends who are helping their developer buddy. I will wait until I see a demo or get an opinion from someone I trust (like from here). But I agree that the app looks interesting.

    i got a few questions...

    1) What do you recommend for a complete newbie? Would you recommend me Beatmaker + Star guitar + Star piano or i'll have too much pain to understand it? it's ok to learn but i don't like to be left alone with thousands of buttons with very few or no hints.

    2) Once you're happy with your tune and have it recorded, is there a way to put it on your computer and make a mp3 ? or is it going to be limited?

    Thanks.

I'd recommend Beatmaker. I'm new to music making and it was very easy to learn. Noise.io is also a very resourceful tool, but the learning curve is pretty heavy. You can put your work on the computer as a wav. file, but you can convert it to mp3 after that.

I thought I'd revive this thread with a recommendation for the latest iZotope addition to the app store .... iDrum Beatboxing Edition
I've really been loving the ability to create your own beats using the built in microphone. You can record your own voice or sample sounds such as tapping on a glass. You can even alter the sound with some effects they've included. Really great for making beats that don't sound exactly like other drum/beatmaking apps.
There really hasn't been much in the way of quality music making apps released lately ..... I'm hoping that there's some good stuff on the horizon. Anyone know of anything in the works?

New music app out - FingerBeat

It looks to be a tad light of features and functionality in version 1. They are talking about a Pro version being released in the future.

Bebot Robot is one of the best musical instruments on the iPhone that you can get, in my opinion.
