(From a post I made in another thread, I think this has a whole topic's worth of discussion value) I'm sick of everybody getting angry at Apple in the comments of every YouTube video or article where anything tech is mentioned. "Companies like Samsung, Microsoft, etc. show off tomorrows technology and truly innovative designs. Apple shows off yesterday's technology with a shiny apple logo on it and calls it "magical" while overcharging for it." I don't get it. Nobody gets angry at Google or whoever else, and Apple kickstarted this whole tech race. They're the ones who make this stuff fun and useable. IBM were making DOS-controlled PCs and Apple came up with mice and icons. Bill Gates came out with tablet PCs, Apple came up with the idea to make them worthwhile with mobile chipsets, capacitive multitouch screens and apps. MP3 players were around, Apple gave them large storage, an innovative touchwheel interface and more. (Not sure who) came up with Palm PCs, Apple went against all mobile phone providers and integrated them with phones, capacitive multi-touch screens, apps etc. Apple makes all this stuff useable to people who aren't total tech-wizards and that's absolutely commendable. Overcharging? Then howcome every good Android tab is more expensive than iPad? A Mac costs more than a PC of it's same spec would, but the quality of every component is premium, you can record audio at near-studio quality from a built in mic, speakers you can't even see are hi-fi quality, the keyboard is wafer thin and the mouse is actually a touch-screen. Fandroids have lately been referring to my Apple devices as 'toys', because apparently they aren't as functional, but on what Android device can I update my Tumblr or LinkedIn, book Cineworld tickets or shop on Amazon or eBay, without navigating an awkward site, order and stock-check from my local Argos without going through their books, find my next apartment to rent by pointing the device around, etc.? What can you do on Android that you can't on iOS, that is actually of any practical use? Tinker with the way it looks when you're not in an app... Connect it up with bluetooth to your video games and do silly showoffy stuff like that... Being able to change the desktop around somehow makes it a more useful device than my iPhone, despite my iPhone having all of these apps which it doesn't?? Aren't the apps the whole point? It'd be like saying your games console is better than the competition, and that the competition is a mere 'toy' because it lets you mess around with the menu. What's with all the anger??
Just so you know, Apple were years behind the market both with mp3 players and mp3 players with video. All they did was make them a fashion accessory. The click wheel may have been "innovative", but the reason it hadn't been "innovated" before that was because it's ridiculously unintuitive. Yes, Apple had GUIs before Microsoft, but their ideas came from Xerox products. And that was 30 years ago... that doesn't have any relevance today. Not that I think any anger is justified. I like Apple these days and have several Apple products that I'm very happy with. Just thought I'd point out some flaws in your rant.
it's not about who the first one invented it's about the quality and that quality is apple itself 'nuf said
More fanboy QQing about fanboy QQing. Maybe when Apple grows a pair, actually innovates instead of litigate-stops accusing Google of theft, while stealing Android features, maybe they'll get respect again. As for what Android can do that iOS can't that's of practical use, how about changing the entire way the interface is used? Or the ability to use external storage? Or being able to remove/replace the battery? iOS will always do games better, but that's not why I use my phone or tablet. Neither OS is perfect-though the ICS for Android is close-but I will take choice and customization any day. Apple has lost its luster for me with its bullshit lawsuits, outright lies, and arrogance. Plus, using a Note now I could never go back to such a small screen. And one more thing, NOTHING Apple used on the iPhone was new at the time; all those "features" were available on other phones first. Google LG Prada for one example.
"Wait, you mean to tell me that I just spent $650.00 on a product that a user on GameFAQs thinks is a failure!?!?!? Oh nose!!!! I have to go and cancel my order now!" LOL!!! Can I just say, about the retina display, in all iPad promos the thing is always being used in portrait mode, and even the logos, volume rocker placement etc. are all clearly designed to be optimal in portait mode, but 768 pixels across is nowhere near enough to display a website efficiently and legibly so it pretty much always has to be used in landscape for sites. 1536 on the other hand, will mean websites can be viewed like magazines when in portait mode, and I think that'd be incredibly useful, so for me the retina display is a great addition and the main reason I'd consider a 3rd gen iPad eventually. You're missing the point though dude, 'years behind' means nothing, it's about making previously obscure products accessible, fashionable and popular. I think the touch wheel was amazing, it was the first time I could scroll through my thousands of songs on a mobile device so quickly etc. Gotta remember things like - Microsoft may not have invented the PC OS but they sure as hell were the ones to make it affordable and accessible to the masses, and that's hugely important. Behind means nothing. Only real techies had MP3 players until iPod came along. And howcome nobody is getting at Microsoft for being 'years behind' with their Win 8 tablets? It's as if people just want to be angry at Apple, even though they are the reason this entire tech race is happening. My point is that Apple are one of the companies who make all this tech worthwhile. Sharp may have come up with dual-image screens but it was Nintendo who put it in a games console. 3D cameras and body tracking existed for a long time but Microsoft were the ones to turn it into a game & media controller. Of course the innovators deserve credit too but why do people have a problem with Apple, they never claimed to have invented the components.
I'm not going to argue because I agree to an extent. My thing is that Apple has stagnated their water IMO. Nothoing really ever improves. It does it just enough to frustrate you and make you want to upgrade. Trust me, I know. I have an iTouch 4 and sometimes I feel like it's an outdated POS. On those days I am pretty cynical though. I want to see how much the iPad 3 with retina really changes anything. It doesn't seem like it'll be all that great. Look at Samoled screens, they're no retina, but they look phenomenal. They actually look better than retina in certain respects. And doesn't Apple get the majority of it's parts from Foxconn like everyone else? I guess they use the high-end cheap, Chinese labor at Foxconn. Yes, most PCs are plastic instead of aluminum but that's not a bad thing. And it also depends on which manufacturer you buy from. And you can build a better PC.
In response to the "Who in gods name needs a screen resolution of 2048x1536"...well, a lot of people do. When the retina display first came out on smaller devices I was really skeptical. But then when I got my 4th gen iPod it was so much better on my eyes. The difference is huge, especially if you are reading text. I also have a Kindle-- not fire, just regular with the eink stuff-- and the clarity is not comparable at all to a retina display device. For extended reading I would choose the iPad with a retina display every time over a Kindle or any other device.
Actually, you're missing the point. You claimed that Apple were the ones to give them large storage and more features like that. You're wrong. Apple simply made Mp3 players a fashion accessory. That is ALL. Normal MP3 players had much larger storage, had video years before the iPod Video came out and had much more logical user interfaces. The only improvement I can think of that Apple made (apart from aesthetics, which led to popularity) was when they released the iPod Touch over 6 years later that had access to the App Store. I'm not disagreeing that Apple are great designers and that they HAVE been innovative. But in the mp3 player market they didn't push any technology. It was purely aesthetics. Also, I don't know who these "angry at apple" people are, but you seem to be the angriest one here.
Agreed! I actually made a comparison between tech and video games in another thread not to long ago. Apple is the Angry Birds of the tech world. Angry Birds re-skinned Crush the Castle and made the genre famous. It went stale and now developers like Twiitch are coming along to claim the fame with fresh mechanics. (Microoft is looking to fill it's cup with the mobile market) IMO, the biggest flaw with Msoft is their marketing. I've gotten a chance to play atround with Win7.5 phones and watched/read just about ever review, and I honestly think it's superior. Yes, I've owned an iPhone and two other ppl in my immediate family have them as well. I currently have an Android device and an iTouch 4. Look at the Zune media player: it's definitely more stylish than any other mobile player; at least it is IMO. And it only costs $10/month. I'm not even going to get into tablets on here. I made a Win8 tablet thread. We can discuss stuff there. I've been kicked out of too many threads already. It's the same ol' BS with Mac vs. PC. The only superior thing you're getting is the casing. Or you can just buy a Samsung laptop if you want an aluminum body.
I wonder why people go and defend whole organizations or attack them as if it's personal. If you like a product, and think it's fairly priced, and want the product, buy it. If you don't feel like having it, don't. Simple. I have an iPod touch 3rd generation, and would love an iPod 5. But am not angry at Apple for not making one. It's not as if Apple owes me anything. At worst, I might get a Vita or something (which i probably wont) and Apple might lose a potential customer. iPad I don't need right now, so I wouldn't have bought the New iPad no matter how many features were packed in. In someways, for a product line that launches every year, it's good that the upgrades are as gradual as they are. I'd have been a little mad if iPad 3 made my iPad 2 completely obsolete in a year. On the internet, you will find haters for everything on the planet. If you love something someone else hates, especially if that someone is a stranger on the internet, you can't take it seriously. If it's about a near and dear person who hates your beloved Apple, you can always have an healthy debate. End of Philosophy.
Apple has become the elitist company that the common man cannot afford. With a net worth of 70+ billion, it's not like they have to be this way. They have priced the every person completely out of their market. They make, what then? Superior products for superior people? They can run their business however they chose, but I don't have to praise them for it. They've stopped upgrading their iPod Touch line, which just happens to be the most affordable device that they produce. The one product that people of lesser means might actually be able to afford and they've pissed all over it. Is it what? The further pursuit of greed from what is already the richest manufacturing company in the U.S.? I don't know. If they pursue the business of only people who have the most money, they obviously stand a better chance of fleecing those people. Those people have more discretionary income after all and are more willing to part with it. I think Apple has done a disservice by cutting out what had been a significant portion of their costumer base, turning their backs on them, snubbing up their noses, as if to say "we're too good for you, even though we made our fortune from off your backs," but, hey, it's their decision. I certainly don't appreciate it though. Nor do I appreciate them nickel and diming people, even the ones who can afford it, at $500 a pop. Every year a high price upgrade with slightly improved specs. How convenient. God forbid spec improvement went through the roof from one year to the next. They wouldn't be able to create a new version next year if this year's version was too powerful. They wouldn't be able to top their own design within the span of only a year if the improvements were too vast. My laptop will go 2+ plus years being able to run the best games on the market before it has to be replaced. 360, Ps3, 3DS, Vita, we're talking 5-plus years for the lifespan of each system.
I think I agree with the above two posts especially regarding the iPod without a refresh of that device they are going to lose a shocking amount of itunes app sales. I know a lot of people with iphones and truthfully the only app they tend to buy is angry birds, they basicly think I'm foolish for buying things like Fifa on my iPod. Regardless while they may have kept as a customer with an iPod 5 a year ago I'm now happy with my Vita and I really expect that's the device most iPod Touch users will go with for games now.
Well, I've been talking about optimization and longevity since I've been a member on TA. Win8 tablets are the first that will offer that. I don't see any reason why the - currently available - Slate 7 would need to be replaced anytime soon. Also, I don't see how the price is that bad since you're actually getting more (not the illusion of more), it will last longer/not be replaced quickly, is both a computer and tablet, is prolly compatible with everything you already own, can be gotten on sale, and you get a $200 gift card. Plus, these are early adopter prices. It's not like they won't get dropped/reduced/etc. The only thing the iPad has over Win8 tablets is indie dev game support.
I don't hate Apple, but I think they're slightly overrated. What I don't like is how they talk about how revolutionary and innovative their products are when they really aren't all that spectacular- they just use pre-existing technology and take credit for it when someone else really came up with that "innovative" technology. They are great at marketing though (kinda how they fool people with their "creativity"). On the other side of the spectrum, you've got Microsoft that shows off cool tech all the time, but they almost NEVER do anything with it. They actually do innovate (some parts of Microsoft at least), but they don't take many risks- when they do though, they shoot themselves in the foot with terrible marketing. Not really too fond of Microsoft either (or Steve Ballmer). I wish they were both more balanced. There's nothing wrong with using pre-existing technologies in your product, but claiming that you're innovative and taking credit for someone else's work is kind of lame. There's nothing wrong with innovation, but when you don't even use the technologies you come up with and just patent them, what's the point of all the money you put into it? Making something cool and not using it is lame too.
You can make the argument that Apple fell behind some of their competitors when it came to features but when the iPod first came into existence no other product on the market was like it. The only options for MP3 players were flash players with megabytes of storage, CD based players with horrible interfaces and a few heavy hard drive based products the size of portable CD players. I owned three different MP3 players before purchasing a first generation iPod and they flat out sucked, 5 gigabytes in a shirt pocket was revolutionary in 2001. Cheaper and more feature packed products did finally come around years later but I doubt the market would have moved from hobby to mainstream without Apple leading the way.
You may be correct. It's hard for me to know exactly when they became super popular in Australia because I was in the earlier years of High School and it would be understandable if kids my age at the time couldn't afford the first few models. But by the time they became truly mainstream there were far more functional mp3 players on the market. Best example; It was really annoying for me as a teenager when the iPod Video got announced and blew everyones mind (around 04/05 i think), despite having been able to play videos on my iRiver H340 for years before that. But I grew to like Apple in recent years.
The first MP3 player I owned was a Rio PMP-300 back in '99, it had 32MB of onboard storage expandable to 64MB. The next MP3 player I owned was expandable to 96MB and I replaced that with a CD based player with a tiny screen and excruciating load times in the summer of 2000. The closest thing you could buy to an iPod before they were available was the Creative Nomad Jukebox which was twice the size and weight of the first generation iPod. After my third generation iPod died I picked up the iRiver iHP-140 which was a wonderful device packed with a crazy number of features. That device was controllable entirely from a wired remote with it's own display, the only downside was the controls consisted of two jog wheels on the top and two face buttons. As much as I loved the features the awkward controls were a PITA which is why that was the only non-iPod MP3 player I've bought in ten years.
All in all, I think it's pointless to talk about where what came from. It's about the now. I think more people should be looking at functionality and investment based spending, but then that wouldn't be this world. I already have an iTouch 4 that needs to become an iTouch 5 because there's so many optimization problems. Why spend $500+ on a tablet and another x amount on a laptop when you can truly have an all in one that, in theory, shouldn't be replaced next year. If you can get 100% by with an iPad or a cheap Android tablet, then fine! Apple didn't even come up with the iPod for crying out loud. At the end of the day this phrase will always ring true: Good artists borrow, great artists steal. It's life. However, if you don't see it , it's not important; even if you know about it. Why aren't we all throwing up arms about working conditions in China when it comes to making these products!? I typically don't like to go this deep, especially on a thread like this. But, even I admit, this has gotten out of control. *Briton created the iPod*
