For reading, I prefer something e-ink based, that doesn't kill my eyes and has awesome battery life. For web etc., I prefer a computer with a keyboard. As in, I type stuff. So - maybe hang it as a picture frame... Or get an iPhone and a MacBook.
I guess it might for useful for someone looking to turn their Kindle and iPod into one, but other than that... I am really disappointed in the lack of USB ports and other computer related feature, that would open things up to SO many more possibilities.
What is it about the iPad that disappoints you? Pick a reason (or multiple reasons) from the below list, or state your own... No GPS No Camera (with LED Flash) No Multitasking No OLED Screen An extremely disappointing 256 MB of RAM! No Additional Touch Gestures No Videocalling/conferencing/iChat No Handwriting Recognition or Support for a Stylus No Wireless Syncing or File Transfers No File Management or Freedom to download files (even documents) from online No Ability to run custom Apps not preapproved by Apple and sold via the App Store A Very Low Resolution Display with 25% fewer PPPs than the iPhone or iPod Touch No integrated TV antenna or Radio antenna (They even developed a HD DTV Tuner for use in cellphones to allow users to pick up OTA HDTV signals on the go! Why they didn't include this technology in this device I won't understand) No Video Out According to Apple's page on the product, the maximum resolution it is capable of playing MPEG4s at is 640x480 resolution at 30 fps. Not even HD! It features a 1 Ghz processor that significantly slower than just about every single notebook on the market today. No OTA Sync With Apple TV or Servers To Stream Video No Low Reflective Screen Mode for high contrast Ebook Reading that doesn't hurt your eyes Only 64 mbs of HDD space No Gamepad attachment for Gaming With Physical Buttons/Tactile Feedback No bluetooth, or ability to connect to a bluetooth mouse/keyboard No RFID/IR to use it as a remote, or to tag it to yourself No Replacable/Removable Batteries No Java or Flash support (no hulu.com) No ability to connect to an extrernal hdd, or even to pop in an SDCard OP, could you please add this list to your opening post. We haters deserve a thread to coalesce all our complaints about the device and it looks like the mods decided to make yours the official one.
The iPod and the iPhone were actual significant leaps forward when they first came out. Everyone else followed them. And this is why I bought both devices early on, and the reason why I, like everyone else, had high hopes that this device would do something innovative, or offer something new of value. This thing however is like taking 3 steps back. There is so much this can't do that even the iPhone that's a fifth it's size can do, and there is nothing it can do that the iPhone can't. Apple started the presentation by saying that for a Tablet to succeed, it has to some things better than both the iPhone 3GS and a Macbook Pro do. Then he unveiled a product that utterly fails this test. There is nothing it does better than either device.
You can get the same thing with a laptop, just purchase a 3G connector for about 50 bucks, then you get 3G ... Choose your plan, and you're pretty much done. I prefer laptops because they can still last as long as the iPad, it can play real PC games, it has a real keyboard, it's basically a lot better, than a iPad. Although you got to admit, what a wonderful price... I thought the iPad would be running the same OS for Macs though D:... If it did, then this would be a major steal
The iPhone and iPod Touches were leaps ahead of other mobile devices when they came out. Even today with others catching up this remains true. The iPad on the other hand is a gimped tablet/ laptop/ notebook/ what have you. - no multitasking. The damn thing can't run more than one thing at a time save for music while on the web or something. So if even the casuals can't use it, how on earth are medical and business professionals supposed to? - no USB to transfer files. - no Flash, meaning more webpages are going to look like this: - you can run iPhone games small and lonely at the center of the screen, or stretched out and ugly. NO word as to how they'll adjust the controls onscreen. There's more stuff, but year, this thing is a mess that'll be forgotten by next year.
The 3G version has GPS and I think OS 3.2 gives it the ability to use it as an external drive (via the info.plist file) for certain folders on the device. It does have a dock-able keyboard and could very well have a game-pad in the future. Wireless file transfers are available via App Store applications. Did you actually think Apple would add a replaceable battery? Really?
Hey, I've got some cheap stuff that'll fit in your pocket...wanna buy it? As for this thing. I think it's cool but at the same time a fail. Like it made me giddy, but then I saw the homescreen which looked horrible. It was an iPod homescreen but strecthed....major epic fail. Well let's wait and see what a jailbroken pad can do
I'll buy it just for iBoobs XXXXXL.... C'mon, you know there will be awesome apps for this iPad. We'll love it.
Agree with you totally on the home screen. Why have they kept the icons the same size? The iPhone operating system just does not work on a bigger screen, you need a dimmed down version of Snow Leopard! Ah well, maybe next time. Mad
Why? That's the mistake every Windows tablet makes, trying to get OS made for screens and physical keyboard / mouse into a small tablet, it makes everything cramped. The iPad does NOT run iPhone OS, it runs it's own OS. Yes it's similar, but you can't say apps like Safari, AppStore, YouTube, etc. are the same, or anything alike the iPhone apps.
A Leopard operating system would make the tablet so more customisable as you would have folders etc. I'm sure if apple went for the Leopard operating system option they would find a way of making it user friendly and touch screen enabled, yet still incorporate features that we love from Leopard. Instead, I think they went for the easy option and stuck with the iPhone OS theme (OK, the apps are different) and didn't make FULL use of that new real estate that they get from the tablet. Anyways, that is my opinion. Mad
If you want the full Snow Leopard experience in a tablet, get one of these: http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=home
The reason Windows tablets have sucked is that they've crammed desktop interfaces onto tablets. No matter how hard you try, having a desktop OS on a 10inch tablet with 16GB storage isn't a good idea. And if people think the iPad at $500 is expensive I can't even imagine what they would think if Apple released a $1000 tablet. Sure, it's not as customizable as everyone hopes, but the apps are just as good as the ones from OS X. Also, just a thought. Guessing by the SDK, this is using a similar version to iPhone OS 3.1.2, you think Apple might not have shown everything not to reveal what 4.0 will have? Just a thought.
I guess so. I just hope that in the future Apple expand on the iPad and work together with major software developers like Microsoft or Adobe to create something like iWork, but Flash or Microsoft Word etc. Only then will I think about purchasing an iPad. Right now i'm thinking it's more for people who want ebook reader or a bigger version of an ipod touch rather than a minicomputer.
Mmmmm... I hope so, it might be a good opportunity to release 4.0 for the iPad and iPhone/Touch at the same time. A good thought.
