The controls are spot on, the levels are well designed, and everything moves at a brisk pace. Traversal is just fun. macplash Well-Known Member Apr 17, 2014 2,645 1,103 113 Male 3D artist Munich, Germany #4 macplash, Nov 22, 2019 I have to agree with @ColeDaddy and @squarezero about the game. The touch controls are spot on (with plethora of options to choose from), everything is smooth and visually appealing. At first I thought the amount of IAPs is off-putting judging by the list on the App Store, but the reality is completely different. Buying any skin removes ads, adds hearts and stats to your weapon, adds coins. Even optional ads (chests) for bigger rewards during the levels are included. "Unfortunately", I bought Oddmar yesterday so I have to wait to fully immerse myself into Apple Knight because I simply won't mix two different platformers at the same time. But right after I finish it, I'm in. I already bought Premium skin pack while it's on 20% discount to not miss it eventually. In case the Oddmar takes more time to finish than I expect. icoker likes this. Or even better, why not to download the small sized FREE game and see for yourself? The game description on the App Store clearly states under features: CONTROLLER SUPPORT. But yeah, instead of putting some effort by yourself, it’s easier to ask, right? Rangerlump Well-Known Member Jan 20, 2010 482 23 18 #7 Rangerlump, Nov 22, 2019 I didnt see "controller support" hidden in the un-formatted app description on this post. I didnt download it because I am on a MIFI with limited bandwidth. Dude, Mac you have always been cool. Im not sure what has you on the offensive today. I wasn’t referring to un-formatted description in this post in the first place. I didn’t even realize it’s here. The properly formatted description is available just one tap/click away on “buy” button from this post. I also assume you’re not on mobile data the whole day. So this could easily wait until you’re home. But whatever. I can find countless reasons I’m right as easily as you can find excuses for asking instead of figuring it for yourself. Discussion like this could go forever. It’s not only today. I’ve been feeling lately the whole TouchArcade forum is all about 2 things. Complaining about Apple Arcade and asking if the game has controller support. It’s like everything else lost its importance. It’s just getting to me. I appreciate you recognizing my overall coolness. But as I said, it’s getting out of hand with AA and controllers. It went as far as putting one of the forum members on my ignore list cause his constant spamming about controllers was unbearable. I feel bad I snapped at you particularly, but you get my reasons for doing so, right? I’m not sorry though cause I’m sure we both get over it in no time. Rangerlump Well-Known Member Jan 20, 2010 482 23 18 #9 Rangerlump, Nov 22, 2019 Mac! Its all good, I understand and agree. Oh yeah, Apple Knight, The game is AWESOME! Some menus seem to require touch but you are able to set the onscreen gamepad to invisible and use a controller. The game feels smooth on the 2016 (normal) iPad, I bought premium pack after finishing the first level. icoker and macplash like this. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,715 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #10 squarezero, Nov 23, 2019 I have yet to try this with a controller, so I can’t speak to the implementation. Now that I’m two thirds into the game, what I can say is that this is easily one my action platformers on iOS. Games like JackQuest have tried to do similar things, but have often ended up feeling frustrating — especially on a touchscreen. Apple Knight seems to get the idea of traversal right, with controls that are astoundingly precise. I’ve never seen the double jump/wall-climbing combination done better; you just zip through the levels., even when dealing with traps or tiny moving platforms. That’s makes looking for secret areas particularly fun (and not a chore as it is on similar games). Finally, combat is simple but satisfying. Enemy AI range from total idiots to fairly clever. They even out the odds about a bit by letting some enemies fire through thinner walls (which you can’t do). Overall, enemies tend to serve as more of a puzzle element than anything else, which is fine by me. My only caveats: the pixel art is quite good, but the enemy design is pretty limited, which means that you see the same enemies over and again. More variety would have been appreciated (I assume this was a budget issue). Even though the level design is excellent, again the assets are limited. They do introduce variety by using traps, levers, disappearing platforms, etc. But more fresh-looking environments would have been great, too. Again, this seems like a budget issue. The game is fairly short: three worlds, 10 levels each — probably 3-4 hours total, judging by my pace so far. Considering how many 20+ hour games I have in by backlog right now, this is not a negative for me. But I imagine it’s an issue for some. The story is so thin it’s almost non-existent. Anyone expecting Castlevania-style drama will be disappointed. As you can tell, I’m really exited about Apple Knight, and would love to see it get more attention. It doesn’t really break new ground, but what it does it does very well. The single IAP to get ad-free and all skins is worth it for the monster tamer skin, BTW. macplash Well-Known Member Apr 17, 2014 2,645 1,103 113 Male 3D artist Munich, Germany #11 macplash, Nov 23, 2019 @squarezero for me it’s the Dan the Man that is the ultimate representation of touch controls done right. But from what I’ve tried briefly, Apple Knight doesn’t disappoint. Very precise controls made me think of Dan the Man the moment I tried it. I’m so looking forward to find the time and fully immerse myself into this game. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,715 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #12 squarezero, Nov 23, 2019 I like Dan the Man, but that’s more of a brawler than a true platformer. The levels get pretty sprawling in Apple Knight. Royce Well-Known Member Mar 22, 2011 4,240 180 63 #13 Royce, Nov 23, 2019 Indeed, at first I thought it was going to be a fun but very short game, but the challenge and level complexity increases very nicely. The controls are also exceptional as you’ve said. At one point, due to a bug I think, I was left unable to access an area because the switch controlled rising platform was stuck in the up position and I was below. However with some creative wall climbing, ledge grabbing, and precision jumping, I was able to get up there anyway. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,715 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #14 squarezero, Nov 23, 2019 There are always three or four ways of getting anywhere in this game.
