So, I noticed that after the oh-so-fun lag of the App Store earlier in the week (followed, thankfully, by a massive amount of new apps & updates), there is a now a "Redeem" option in the App Store app (at the bottom of the "Featured" page - like this). I've never noticed this before, but maybe I just missed it all this time? (Doubt it, I'm pretty addicted to my Touch!) I don't have a promo code to test with, but if anyone does (or if some very kind dev would like to offer me a promo code to test this ) it'd be great to find out if Canucks can finally offer others a little gift! We are, after all, so damn polite
Hmmmm, most interesting... I see it in the UK Store too. I wonder if that means we can now use promo-codes too! Hoping...
The redeem option has always been on iTunes. It's probably just a more accessible way to redeem iTunes credit.
It has always been on the desktop version of iTunes for purchasing music, but it is a brand new feature on the iPhone-specific App-Store (at least here in the UK). As you cannot buy music from the App-Store, I am *assuming* and hoping that we can now redeem promo-codes! I may of course be totally wrong though...
Yeah, BretttArchibald is right - having a "redeem" button in the *App Store* is new, and would only, presumably, apply to apps! C'mon dev's - isn't there some nice friendly Canadian dev that's willing to pony up? IUGO? Trapdoor? Um, others? (I know there are more... stupid memory!)
sign up at one of those sites which give promo codes to registered users every 24 hours so you can test.
Did redeem come with 3.0 or was it just recent? You could always redeem from iTunes on your phone. I know the app store one is new though.
One might think it *could* be for gift-cards only, but the description for it (if you click on the link) says: "Enter your iTunes Gift Card, Gift Certificate or other iTunes Code." Now it's that "other iTunes Code" bit that intrigues me...
Same. The other question would be: Can Canadians (and UK, I guess) now use iTunes gift cards for the App Store? We couldn't before (right?), only for movies & music. Anyone have a card they can try?
OK, update I just tried a code on my iPhone and was told "The code you entered was not a valid code". I tried the same code on my desktop-iTunes and was told "This code is only valid for customers of the US store". So I'm guessing that Apple has just used one Redeem style button across *ALL* the mobile App-Stores, both US and non-US, and while those in the US can use it for *ALL* codes, those outside the US can still only use it for gift-cards...
I was answering your question of "Did redeem come with 3.0 or was it just recent?" Whether it came yesterday or the day before, it was certainly a very very recent addition: it did not appear when 3.0 first appeared.
Canadian law states that gift cards or store credit may not be used to purchase software, so not for Canada.
Hmmmm, interesting... So I guess my theory of "Apple has just used one Redeem style button across *ALL* the mobile App-Stores, both US and non-US" is true then, regardless of whether we can actually use that Redeem feature or not in our current location's App-Store... Dumb... I expect it to be "fixed" and removed from certain mobile App-Stores soon in that case...
Strange. I guess the button is just useless then, and we still can't get anything for free or with the iTunes gift cards likely. (Of course, I have an american account for the free stuff, and the stuff you can't get in Canada - like the Skype app!)
