Just out of curiosity, is there a guideline when making an app's icon? Why some icons have the curved gloss and some don't? Does it have to stay in the rounded box shape? If so, why Paradox icon breaks the rule?

It just has the image with a black background and no glossyness. Same with the AP Mobile News app

Ok, so is that allowed? I mean, the illusion of not having a rounded box around.

Obviously. There's no guideline except that it can't be square and ugly looking

Billy Frontier also had a black background: one of the reasons I deleted it from my iPod, it just didn't look good, well, that and being crappy...

Thanks for that "Latest Star Wars movie that sucked big-time and it's also a show on a children's channel". You should be my side-kick...

There aren't really any guidelines. It should look nice though, and you have to have a 512x512 copy along with a smaller 57x57 one.

What about the ads on the app store main page? Do devs make these as well?

The shine on the icons is automatically put on by default. You can turn it off if you want, but most people leave it on.

Yes, but apple may move some things around like the title to make it fit in the different sized banners.

Aren't there actually two factors? The shine at the very top and the gloss that covers the upper half? Aren't they customizable as well?

Nope its all just one option, all the shine and gloss, or nothing. If you want to customize it, you can just turn off their shine, and make your own.
