So I just got an iPhone 3GS. Are there any tips that could do me any good? I had an iPhone 3G and I don't know all the features of my upgrade yet.

Compass, Video Recording, Voice Control (hold down home), and obviously the faster processor are pretty much the only significant things. I'm probably forgetting something though.

  3. You forgot:

    - Newer PowerVR SGX video chipset with OpenGL 2.0 support
    - Double the RAM of the 1st gen and 3G models (256mb; previous gens had 128MB)
    - Can use multitasking and wallpaper in iOS 4

Alright, thanks!! I'm just so happy that iOS 4 runs so fast now. It was literally hell on my old phone. I even took the time to have a little fun and take out the camera and some other parts I could sell, meanwhile, I smashed the rest of the phone with a hammer:D

Congrats on the upgrade and enjoy the video recording! That was the first thing I started doing a lot once I had bought my 3gs.

Oh yeah, one more thing. How much should I sell the old parts for, camera, battery, etc? The battery is brand new and only ten days old since I just installed it from iFixit, and the camera has been in there for about 2 years but is still in great condition. I need some money for some other cases and I want to find a good pair of in-ear headphones (was going for V-Moda).

Old parts, what old parts? I'm confused.

If you're talking about selling your old 3g, they are worth about 150-200 on Craigslist, more if you still have it at 3.1 firmware. I sold my 3gs on there for 250, took that and bought the iPhone 4 upgrade.

  10. He beat the crap out of his 3G. It is, presumably, in bits, and some of those bits are still good. Either that or it's still intact but non-functional, in which case he'll tear it to bits to sell its parts.

That said, I sincerely doubt there's a market for those parts sold loose on eBay. iDevices are incredibly fiddly to replace parts on, not to mention requiring special hardware, and you'd have to really know what the hell you're doing. The market for those people are pretty damn small, especially when it's easier for them to either send their device to Apple or iFixIt to get fixed.

Turn on battery percentage on your 3GS. A feature that the 3G didn't get and it's a little hidden if you don't know about it.

General > Usage > And turn on the top option

    One of my favorite things

Ah, well Craigslist is still the haven for that as well, lol. There are businesses on there buying broken electronics. My guess, probably to part them out, patch working units and sell for a decent profit.

    Broken iPhone 3g $40

Nice ad for broken iPhones, that looks reputable.

  14. Not a bad deal for a dead iPhone 3G I suppose, but he only picks up in the OC. I suppose you could dig around and find someone to ship it to.

This one, on the other hand, has been flagged for removal. :D

Lol, yah you gotta be careful to some extent. I told the guy I sold my 3gs to that I would only meet at an ATM and only accept bills taken out of said ATM. He could pick the branch. You have to be careful about counterfeit bills, people robbing you if you meet somewhere not public. Most ATMs have security cams built in so that's an extra layer of protection as well.

I think there's a craigslist in every major city. Not sure about other countries, is it in Canada?

  16. That's true with anything, but Craigslist most especially; that site's format allows for an enormous amount of spam and makes it easy for scammers to operate. I've sold on Craigslist but rarely buy from there unless I'm almost positive the guy's legit. The slightest whiff of anything untoward in a CL ad and I skip right by it. And I go to eBay or its classified kin Kijiji before Craigslist.

Not a bad idea, really. For in-person meetings, I always advocate meeting in a very public, busy place, getting a landline phone number and verifiable address, and inspecting the merch before closing the deal. The last is particularly effective; if the seller starts getting impatient and antsy while inspecting, chances are there's something wrong with it they don't want you to find.

Yeah, I think CL is in most major countries. We've got it in all major Canadian cities.
