I'm not sure exactly what I'm after, but it's kinda specific. I want something that won't be completed too quickly... something I can keep coming back to and watch it grow. Preferably not just looking after one animal like Nintendogs or any of that crap, maybe something Spore-like (but not Spore :p) with a community that gets bigger. Something fairly relaxing too, I don't want an RTS. Hell, maybe even an aquarium game if it's involving and varied enough.

    Any ideas?

    Oh... and not FarmVille.

Hey, try this game. MMO/virtual life now free.

Also, I know this might seem obvious, but what about The Sims 3?

These are the only ones I know of. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hm. I don't really want to control a virtual life directly, just kinda maintain/breed it. I guess The Sims kinda fits, but it's too much of a social game really, I'd prefer something to do with creatures than humans. Thanks anyway.

I was going to mention Fish Tycoon, but then I remembered how boring it got. I mean, I don't want to spend a whole year finding the right mix of potions just so I can get a legendary fish! Oh, wait... I did that.

It's fun for a while, but not worth the $30.

it's only $6.99 for the full Mac version, that is definitely worth the money.

I used to play a game called Creatures. It's pretty fun with huge environments where you feed, breed, and teach various creatures. There's three types of creatures each with their own various breeds. It's an older game but still has several active fansites for it, where people upload custom items and breeds and such to add to your own game. When you first start you register your own account, and you can play either offline or online. You can send/receive creatures and add friends and send messages too.

    Hope this helps :)

What about Virtual Villagers? The fourth was just released, it's amazing.

 I bought it for $30!

Meh... A game from 2001? In 2010? I don't know about that one.

If there's a such thing as an SNES/N64 emulator for the mac then I think Harvest Moon is one of the best virtual life games ever made. Being a farmer sounds like a boring game but there's just something really compelling about growing crops, buying farm animals, getting married and upgrading your house :) It's not really like farmville because you get to move around in a world and it doesn't take hours to grow crops :)

I totally forgot about Harvest Moon. Any idea if the original is better than the GBA one?

Friends of Mineral town is better because there's more things to do in it. The Snes one still holds up well though. The very best one would have to be Harvest Moon 64 because you can have a greenhouse for winter gardening and the rival guys in town marry other women and have kids along with you :)

Excellent games. (Creatures 1, 2, 3 + various addons - skip the simpler Creatures Adventures, etc.) I know that at least the first game made it to the Mac.

Here's an article on the series on Wikipedia
