You misunderstand my point. I'm talking about marketing consultants, not developers and publishers. It's the same folks who say "Wii Sports sold incredibly well. Wii Sports has motion controls. That means that every game will sell extremely well if it has motion controls." Saying that "freemium is the future," as many marketing consultants are quick to do these days, begs the question "The future of what?". Clearly the hardcore gamers who bought DH2 are staying away from DH3 in droves, while casual gamers show little interest on a grind-heavy hack 'n slash RPG. The freemium business model simply doesn't work on a single player action title. Any marketing consultant who uses a chart like the one above to say otherwise is swindling their clients.
I didn't misunderstand the point. I disagreed with it. The example of motion controls is nonsensical, as that is not a business model, it is a feature. I cannot fathom why someone who usualy speaks with clear logic would use that comparison. You were apparently explaining the meaning of marketing consultant.. Freemium isn't the future. It is clearly the present so long as it is out-grossing many times more than paid apps even when the freemium app's quality is much, much crappier. I'm not speaking solely on GL's sales, just in general, and I believe GL will continue the venture into the freemium market as long as that business model works in the AppStore, which it obviously does. Btw, "swindle" - Use of deception to deprive (someone) of money or possessions Speaking of hyperbolic statements. If you don't like it, don't play it. There is no need to feel swindled if you don't like, play, or pay for a game. Simple. Is it not?
As far as unreal powered games, it seems the low res textures just ruin it for me. Is there some kind of memory limit on older devices (low ram on touches?) that makes them use such low res textures or is it all ios devices that force them to use such poor textures or is it just crappy artists? Anyway, hard to get excited for a gameloft game in my book.
The misunderstanding is starting to get so pretty freaking epic that I'm starting to enjoy it. In case you are actually interested in what I actually meant, here's breakdown: *Cookie-cutter marketing advice that is meant to apply to everything = a swindle *Freemium business model: not a swindle (though maybe unwise depending on circumstances) BTW Freemium is both a business model as well as a way to design games. I used the example of motion controls as another succesful idea that has been applied to the wrong kind of games. Perhaps a better example would have been peripheral gaming (i.e. instruments in Guitar Hero) which is both a business model and a particular kind of game design. What worked well for GH and RB utterly flopped on DJ Hero and Tony Hawk.
Nicely put. Unless Gameloft kicks down the door with an absolutely amazing, premium title, chances are I'll skip it altogether. I don't know why these guys are doing what they're doing. Well, the obvious answer is to maximize profits, but geez, they sure have set up a nice little PR nightmare for themselves in doing so.
In interest of not trying to discredit you completely, I will agree that u have some fair points. Though your sloppy use of the word "swindle" is utterly ridiculous and even has hyperbolic propaganda written all over it. I've made my points but put simply, freemium is the dominant business model in the AppStore, indisputably. I couldn't fault Gameloft for attempting to cut a slice of that. This whole discussion between you and I is semi-pointless for this thread since we don't even know if this particular game will be freemium or not. Carry on.
Agreed -- we have no idea what Gameloft is doing with this game (heck, we don't even know what kind of game it is). For the record, though, when I use the word swindle, I mean swindle. As someone who, at the height of the Internet bubble, saw marketing consultants sell prepackaged web strategies as "consulting services," I know what I'm talking about.
If its freemium I am going to find someone who can hack the sh** out of gameloft anonymously. If anyone wants to argue its fine by me, I just don't like freemium style games, or at least, not gameloft freemium style games. Some games do a good job with freemium, making it a bonus, so people can enjoy the game without it up to a point, gameloft makes sure that you end up paying sh!tloads of money if you want to have good anything, and in doing so, make it possible for someone to spend fifty bucks and the. Just glide through the game on their "premium" items. Ba ba ba ba BULLSH!!!!T {>_<}
Of course I bet you fifty bucks there are people who would much rather have freemium and don't like premium, it's all a matter of taste, I'm not saying either is good or bad, they are both matters of opinionation.
If people don't like premium games then why do they bother to play games at all? Just think if every games on the Xbox 360 or the PS3 were all Freemium, what would happen? Freemium game is why the iPhone cannot compete with the 3DS or PS Vita in term of production value and high quality games.
I wonder since its Unreal game whether the Game size will still be ridiculously large like the ones using their old game engine from 1990 lol!
For now I must agree... Only game that worked "kind of" was Gyro13, IB2 was a bugged piece of rainbow colored poop. And Unity3D in Shadowgun is just amazing,
