  8. I'll accept that answer. The answer I was aiming for was The Jacquard Loom, which was the first device to use punched cards as a way of automatically sequencing patterns into textiles as they were being woven on the loom. This punched card method was adopted as a method of information storage and retrieval by Semen Korsakov, then later by Charles Babbage for use in a calculating machine he devised, and ultimately in the United States for the 1890 census, and from there into the first punched-card computers.
