AmbiScience: Galactic Chill released! Getcher promo codes!

Discussion in 'iOS Apps' started by Mindfield, Jun 27, 2009.

  1. I thought this was going to be held up at least until sometime next week, but AmbiScience: Galactic Chill has been released!

    AmbiScience: Galactic Chill
    Price: $0.99

AmbiScience: Galactic Chill is your one-stop shop for great ambient and chillout tunes backed by optional isochronic and binaural beats. This entrainment system tunes your brainwaves to attain specific, known frequencies to achieve particular states of mind, such as relaxation, alertness, or assist in inducing sleep or hypnagogic states. There are 10 entrainment effects in total -- 5 different ones available in both isochronic and binaural.

As for the music, that's where I come in. I wrote 8 of the 11 tracks available here (3 of the others were carried over from other AmbiScience apps as contextually appropriate filler), and have at least two more planned for an update in a few weeks. The tracks range from pure ambient soundscapes to lush synth pieces to uptempo chillout and electronica pieces. I've tried to cover a broad enough spectrum to suit a variety of desired moods and mind states.

You'll also get entrainment presets, individual volume controls for music and effects, a sleep timer, and more.

So if you've had a rough day at the office, pounding the pavement, slaving over a hot laptop, or just need a break for any reason, Galactic Chill is your mental ticket to a sonic tour of the universe!

But if you call within the next 15 minutes, I'll personally SlapChop Vince Shlomi's nuts! Oh, and I'll also give away 10 promo codes.

But there's a catch. You gotta leave an honest review in iTunes if you snag a code. Let me know what you think! Don't pull any punches. Like it or hate it, I wanna hear about it. I'll probably say you're wrong and call you mean things for hurting my feelings, but deep down the seed of truth will eat away at my soul until I accept the criticism in stride. (But really, I take all comments, good or bad. It's all good one way or another.)

Also, please post which code you've taken so everyone will know when they're gone.

I've attached the codes as a text file here to ward of those pesky lurkers. Grab and go, folks! If you miss out, I'll be doing a Twitter giveaway for another 10 codes too, but I can't give specifics because of that whole self-promotion thing. (The one that's not about apps) Y'all know what to do there.

I am very interested in this app. Will leave a review in iTunes unless I think there are major issues, and otherwise will PM you.

It's amazing how long codes hang around when lurkers taken out of the equation.

Thanks! And I'll be sure to post a review!

Well, there's a variety of musical styles in there, though mostly centered around electronica in one form or another, but I think there's something there that'll help you get your sheep on. :)

(Wait, that didn't sound entirely kosher...)

From what I've used of the app there don't seem to be any issues. The looping of the tracks isn't what I expected or wrong the songs for -- I composed the songs with specific loop points in mind, but apparently Nick is still working out how to loop to a point within the song, so they've been retooled to loop in their entirety, with crossfades at strategic points. The result isn't always, in my opinion, as seamless as I'd hoped, but the bonus tracks I'll be writing for the update will be written with that specifically in mind.

Ain't it, though? I wish all devs did this. Maybe we'd have more than 45 seconds to grab them. :)

It is indeed, but I can't take credit. It was suggested a couple of times a few months back but the idea never seemed to take -- probably because the thread's long buried by now and there are always new devs popping up.

I'm glad you all enjoy it! And you're welcome, I hope it brings you much chill.

This actually looks pretty good. Normally such things don't appeal to me, but I must say, I'm intrigued. Unfortunately, I'm on my iPod, so I can't open the attachment with the codes :(

Well, I used to play rock music to go to sleep to when I was in college...to this day, I can't listen to Rob Zombie without yawning and getting sleepy.

Well, no rock here, but I know what you mean. I listen to a lot of trance music and have a tendency to nod off on the bus listening to it. But then I suppose I could sleep to anything if I'm tired enough. :D

Well, maybe not Rob Zombie. If Dragula or Superbeast cycle into the shuffle I get the urge to bang. Really most industrial I guess. PWEI, Front 242, FLA, earlier Skinny Puppy... can't sleep to those. Also Moev, and I don't know why.

  12. Okay, the Twitter giveaway will commence around noonish (EST) on Saturday the 27th (today, technically), so if anyone misses out on the remaining codes here, you'll have another chance on Twitter. I'll hand out 10 codes, one about every hour or near enough throughout the afternoon and evening until they're gone.

    Mindfield -

So I have been listening off and on with and without the entrainment. I have to say that it is very intriguing. When I get done with this quick note, I am going to try the deep relaxation entrainment, and see if it helps me to sleep.
But, I was watching your Youtube demo, and I was thinking that having some of the visual patterns present might also be really nice and helpful. I know that when someone tells me to close my eyes and relax, I think about an itch, or a sore place, etc... Looking at something like the visuals are soothing, somewhat hypnotic, and are also distracting, and may allow easier relaxation. I don't know anything about BWE - I googled it and looked at a few sites, and it looks a lot like alpha and beta wave biofeedback with fancier science..
I have discovered that using good quality headphones makes a huge difference.
    Off to bed for trial...

    Two other AmbiScience Apps

If anyone didn't see it. AmbiScience has released two other new Apps besides Galactic Chill:
    Relax Trax and Pure Meditation
Each of them is US$ 0,99 and from an email chat with AmbiScience I got the message that a second bundle will be released too, but that will take some time.

I just bought all three of them blindly. Owning all other apps from them, that was a no-brainer.

I'm glad you're enjoying it! Yes, good headphones do make a significant difference. It's funny you should mention visualizations, as my wife mentioned almost the exact same thing last night. I'll admit that it's definitely something I've thought about, too, and something I'll be bringing up with Ron. I don't know what Nick's proficiency with OpenGL-ES is so I don't know how effective he will be in designing GL-based visualizations, but hopefully it's something he can work out.

Please let me know how it worked out with the sleeping.

Yes, the other two feature tracks from Neil Goldstein (Pure Meditation) and the award-winning Humble Brothers (Relax Trax) who also did the soundtrack to the iPhone game Gravity Well. Neil's stuff is deceptively simple single-notes and harmonic accompaniment, and he loves to play with slowly evolving phased chords. The Humble Brothers' tracks are simply brilliant all around -- but they're pros, so it stands to reason.

    Great minds think alike :D

I don't think that the visualizations would need to run more than 3 - 5 minutes either (in the interest of battery conservation) - just something to help you focus, particularly for someone who is new to this.

Well, I will be interested in seeing how this goes over the next week or 2, but I slept very well, and woke up feeling very refreshed. I am by nature pretty skeptical, but I also keep an open mind, and really enjoyed my experience with your program last night.

  18. It's probably something that could be incorporated with the sleep timer -- add a timer for the visualization to stop and let the device enter its preset sleep mode so as not to pooch the battery.

I'm glad you're enjoying it! I'm a card-carrying member of the Skeptics Society myself, especially when it comes to affairs of the brain. It is very difficult to quantify the efficacy of stuff like this, so I've always approached it with a bit of a sideways glance. There are those who swear by it, but again it's difficult to determine if it really worked or if it's just a placebo effect.

Still, having tried it myself it does seem to help induce the given states. I'm given to understand though that, as you've realized, it does apparently take a bit for your brain to get used to. You seem to have to use the entrainment effects persistently over the course of a week or two before you can slap a judgement on it. Fortunately it's the sort of thing you tend to enjoy doing, so it's not like that's a hardship. :)
