With the iPad I was finally able to create a multitouch roller coaster track editor that is truly usable. Trying to create a roller coaster on a tiny iPhone screen never really felt right. In AirCoaster XL you can navigate around your track using 1 finger to rotate, 2 to zoom and 3 to pan. Tweak and adjust any segment in the track by tapping on the segment to select it and then dragging the manipulator tools (the colored 3D arrows) to get it to look the way you want. Check out the screenshots. Gotta love the 1024x768 screen resolution.
We'll find out next Saturday! But seriously I think the performance will be quite alright. The iPad has a pretty decent GPU, and AirCoaster's 3D engine is pretty optimized. My guess is that you'll get a frame rate similar to the iPhone 3GS/3rd gen iPod touch for the same complexity, but at a much higher resolution.
You've now included pylons!!! This looks amazing! I love roller coasters and I used to play some of the old roller coaster simulators all the time (ie. No Limites, etc.). This looks to be much closer to those in design than the original AirCoaster, which seemed kind of unrealistic. The interface is beautiful too! Does this game use an accurate physics engine? EDIT: Just checked out the iPhone version, and wow this app has changed a lot since the original!
Yep the game uses a physics simulation engine. Roller coaster physics is really not that hard. And yes AirCoaster has changed a lot since the very first v1.0 release. I've been working on it for over a year now, you know....
Hey Z, it looks like you've managed to one-up yourself yet *again*! Nice one! Looking forward to adding this to the new 'pad, once it comes out in Canada
The app has been approved and is now live on the app store!! Unfortunately my iPad is still in some plane somewhere over the Pacific ocean.... AirCoaster XL is a universal app (i.e. contains both the iPad and iPhone version), so if you guys are planning to get it, you can get it now and start fiddling with it on your iPhone/iPod touch... and then experience what it's like to go from the iPhone version to the iPad version. It's aaaawesome. After weeks of coding using an iPad simulator, it's a relief to see that it truly works well on the actual device.
